did they stop wearing flannel shirts and moleskins 24/7 and start eating food that was more exotic than lamb chops with 3 veg? 😂
lol it’s been years since I’ve heard of those Aertex shirts they all wear- was the same in the bay with all the orchardists like it was some unofficial uniform.
Can’t see too many skinheads and wizards wearing them though ;)

“A group bidding for a Christchurch NRL franchise plans to roll out 22 regional academies across New Zealand from 2025, catering for up to 2200 student athletes.”

Says first academy will open next year and other academies will include all over nz including Wellington and Auckland.

Dunno who is funding it or just chalmers ususal bs

But if true it’s a significant investment in nz juniors as many on here want to see happening

It could be all talk, but if this is real and they start implementing a training academy in chch, early next year, and moreso down the track, just like what grima was task to do with png, (and remember he set up 6 in every major populous in png) then they'll get the nod, this the stuff arlc want from their bidders, and of course a willingness to spend thier money on a licence fee, aswell as spending their funds on youth academies to filter thru to what could be their NRL franchise,
Too many bidders are mouth peices, and moneymen, need to see tangible pathways, unless your an already established league club like dolphins were, this is what they searching for. This was why I could see the Endacott bid being the favourite, coz they are the local presence down there, and if they got the investment behind them they'll be the 20th, but if orcas a doing it all alone then it seems there would be no need for merging with the SI bid

Perth had yet to show any of this, other than their existing park footy comp, but given their premier is about to fork out WA govt money to set up those similar academies there in Perth, that ticks a crucial box to get them over the line with the ARLC, and the Bears will parachute those kids in for the meantime

cut n paste from the tele

Warriors owner Mark Robinson believe the game is 10 to 15 years away from being able to expand into New Zealand with a second team to rival the Warriors.

Moffett disagrees.

“The Warriors – a team with 30 years of underachievement both on and off the field – are suddenly the self-appointed gatekeepers of rugby league in New Zealand,” Moffett said. “Yet now they suddenly have the vision to ‘take over’ the country?

“Spare us. Their notion of monopolising New Zealand rugby league is as bizarre as it is delusional. They don’t run rugby league in New Zealand; they merely occupy a seat they’ve done little to earn.”

The Kea would be based in Christchurch.

They weren’t the only bid from New Zealand rejected.

Moffett said a second team would help grow the game.

“Their CEO speaks of five feeder teams travelling to Australia, as if this is a unique burden, ignoring the fact that their current structure has done little to elevate the domestic game,” Moffett said.

“They’ve had three decades to invest in pathways, facilities and grassroots development, and what do they have to show for it?

“A stagnant monopoly that has failed to grow the game in meaningful ways.

“A genuine South Island rival wouldn’t just challenge the Warriors on the field – it would reinvigorate their entire organisation.

“Rivalries ignite passion, sell tickets and drive sponsorships.”
He's not wrong but shouldn't be anywhere near the NRL. I mean here is his latest ramblings on LinkedIn just this week, angling for Welsh Rugby Union clubs to call an EGM and get voted as CEO (and wants to cull a professional side again... a genuine mad man).

Feck him and anyone who endorses him.

Not sure what you mean with the "Multi" comment tho. :)
Is this your first week on the internet? ;) You don't know what a multi is?

Anyway, there's a poster on this thread who has pretended to be a Cantab before, who is an Aussie, and the post I first responded to of yours was very similar to to their style.

Hi Matua - I'm from NZ live in ChCh. And have played both Union & Leauge - Many years ago, I played 1st X1 for my school ON A WEDNESDAY - then played for my PREMIER League side on EITHER Sat or SUNDAY at Addington Stadium. My son did exactly the same thing.
I agree with you re the us and them. I posted that exact thing a few posts ago. Over here (NZ) they are totally inter-changeable.
So did you play soccer on a Wednesday and league on the weekend? What school were you at (one of the big rugby schools?), and what day was rugby played?

Being a CanTab I would like it to be led by at least a South Islander. Lowe & Chambers are both North Islanders, at least Moffet lives in Canterbury, and North Islanders have the habit of thinking we (South Islanders) don't know how to do things lol - in business or sport.
That is til Razor Robertson came along and won x 7 Super titles IN A ROW. Our relationship is a lot like NSW v QLD in ALL things.
That's an odd comment considering the Crusaders were by far the most successful Super team long before Razor arrived as coach. I think the NI knew that you SI'ers were competent before Razor arrived.

Interesting comments about the domestic game in Chch though, my mates down there don't think it's in as good shape as you do, but they might just be focusing on the premier comp and not the lower grades.

My ex son-inlaw and his brother both came up thru ChCh league scene. Both became Junior warriors - both became Junior Kiwis. Went to Aus. couldn't crack the Sydney hive, went to Newcastle trailed for their NSW team - couldn't crack that !! ended up spending 10 years playing bush footy for Cessnock and surrounds. I think at least back in early 2000s Kiwis found it hugely difficult to break into the NRL systems.. :( sad because there was at that time a huge amount of great talent that went "Bush" and vanished.
Yeah, I was involved with a Maori sports charity back in the day (circa 2006-2013) so got to know a bunch of the young guys going over for U20s and I don't think many of them actually made it through to first grade.

In case you haven't found it there's an NZ section of the forum, where we discuss NZ and Warriors stuff - I mostly just complain that no one cares about the Kiwis and the Warriors select too many Aussies. ;)

why is it not a valid point ?
I wasn't saying it's not a valid point, rather, like your post on this page points out for another point, it was old news.

Doubling the opportunities for NRL pathways and Top 30 positions is only a positive for the game in NZ in my view ..

of course they should and would try to improve the domestic game ,,, but I don’t think the growth of the Canterbury Competition will make much difference to their NRL team … they will have the 5 feeder teams playing in the NRL branded competitions like the Warriors have finally started to..
I've always agreed it's a positive, I just don't think the state of the domestic game across the country can be ignored. League being a niche sport based in the Warriors part of Auckland and Chch where all the feeder teams are isn't ideal for me (I'm not from those two areas, as aren't 3m other NZers).

I think we all rocked an Aertex in the Bay at some stage, even us non orchardist/farmers/Lindersfarne students.

Southern Zone Rugby League Sees Significant Growth in 2024
The Southern Zone Rugby League community is celebrating another remarkable year of growth in 2024, with participation numbers soaring by 41% compared to 2023. This impressive increase underscores the commitment and effort of players, volunteers, and staff across the Zone, including the districts of Southland, Otago, Aoraki, West Coast, and Te Tauihu.

Junior Participation Leading the Way
Junior players have been at the forefront of this expansion, with a staggering 73% growth in numbers. This success has been driven by the introduction of a 26-team Otago Junior Competition, Junior Competitions being held in Southland, West Coast and Aoraki which continue to grow year-to-year, and the recent school festivals held in Marlborough and Nelson.

Growth in Female Participation
Female participation continues to surge, with a 60% increase in 2024, following a 63% rise in 2023. Building on this momentum, the Southern Zone remains committed to expanding opportunities for female players in the years to come and providing pathways for women and girls in rugby league.

Youth Development Milestones
The youth division has also seen significant progress, with a 37% rise in participants. Notable achievements include full district representation (5 teams) in the 16s boys' grade at the South Island Youth Tournament. Additionally, the number of teams in the 16s girls' grade doubled from two to four, reflecting the growing enthusiasm in this space.

A Community Effort
This extraordinary growth is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers from across the Zone. Their efforts across our five districts have created an environment where players of all ages and backgrounds can thrive.
The support from funders, sponsors and RSTs within the Southern Zone has made this achievable by ensuring opportunities to participate in rugby league can continue to be offered.

A special thank you to our partners: Aotearoa Gaming Trust, The Lion Foundation, Grassroots Trust, Pub Charity, New Zealand Community Trust, Otago Community Trust, ILT Foundation, Waitaki District Council, Hokitika Glass Studio, Heartland Potato Chips, Better Finance, Geeves Scaffolding, Top10 Holiday Park Greymouth, Whitestone Contracting LTD, Subway Oamaru, NZ Warriors, Active Southland, Sport Otago, Sport Canterbury, Sport Tasman.

'Participation'. How many are actually registered players playing regular club or school RL? Unfortunately with the way all sports now share 'participation' data its hard to say what's actual genuine playing numbers.

Also in this case note they are talkign % not numbers. If you've got 10 kids playing and 10 more play you've got a 100% increase but still only 20 kids playing.

Still growth is a good thing whatever the growth is actually in.

Well, I guess if the Region has started a "26 Team Junior Competition" Those players are "actual" League players and play the sport on a regular basis. ummm 26 Teams ='s at the VERY least 338 players - that's just x 1 of the competitions.

Depends if it is a season competition or one off weekend gala events. Devil is always in the detail.

Pretend everything you read isnt gospel. I'm not saying it is or it isnt, just when data gets presented these days on 'participation' it is wise to consider what it actually means.
Im really only interested in registered playing numbers, the rest is great but doesn't really mean a lot. As you have been saying for years about AFL 'participation' numbers in Qlnd and NSW.

Did anybody question your wa figures ?

Is nz2 going to have an issue finding and developing players ??

Answer is resounding no

They will pillage union on top of league pathways

Nz2 and png are going to see a huge boost to juniors

And ... as I have said many times B4 .. The Bulldogs and The Roosters have on going pathway academies here in Christchurch. And those two Clubs don't waste money on things that don't work..

the WA 4,400 are registered club players. I'm sure if we added in things like the nines, harmony cup, the schools programs, the league all stars events, the come and have a go days then yeh we'd be at 10k+!

You're right and more people playing RL is a good thing. exciting times ahead.

Huh? That's all the Junior teams competitions (U18 boys and girls, U15 boys and girls etc) not 1 competition.

Also, you didn't say what school you and your boy went to?

How many RL clubs are there in Chchurch?
This link has info about the clubs and schools league:
