I’ve always felt 40 million would be a decent number with nz2 being team 20

As @Gobsmacked has pointed out this is a disaster for rugby union in nz and only makes it easier for nrl to expand

If they do get cut by 50 percent their finances will be decimated

Total super rugby tv deal will be around 90 million Aussie

NRL currently 430 million rising to ???? 550 million

The nrl outrates super rugby with one nrl team

The current nrl deal is still just over half what the nz ru tv deal will end up with

With a second nz team you would think the current 32 million deal is still a bargain

Google search shows dazn are in nz

So who knows if they bid for it since league appears to be a big part of their strategy

My counter argument is that rugby is not dead in NZ. To say it is, or that it’s dying or that league will replace it is pure fantasy.

Warriors can barely service Auckland as it is without taking too many games from the biggest market

I'm just suggesting 2 games per year - one trial & one regular season game... which is pretty common for other NRL clubs.

For the Warriors, that'd be taking the trial to a smaller secondary market (say Whangarei OR Rotorua), and the regular season game to Hamilton.

For the Wellington team, maybe a trial in New Plymouth & a regular season game in Napier.

It wouldn't erode the regular season offering much at all.

I'm just suggesting 2 games per year - one trial & one regular season game... which is pretty common for other NRL clubs.

For the Warriors, that'd be taking the trial to a smaller secondary market (say Whangarei OR Rotorua), and the regular season game to Hamilton.

For the Wellington team, maybe a trial in New Plymouth & a regular season game in Napier.

It wouldn't erode the regular season offering much at all.

There aren’t any other realistic places for an nrl team 20 by 2032

Yeah, ideally we'd see reciprocal ticketing (for Sydney clubs) AND the NRL buying home games to take to mid-sized NZ centres, so the pressure isn't all on the limited number of NZ teams to take games to all parts.

Reality is nrl isn’t even trying to take over nz

But if Christchurch is a huge success they might start taking nz more seriously like having a kiwi on the commission and changing the name to Anzac rlc

If the NRL wants co-ordinate the "home away from home" schedules to maximize reach of their product & take advantage of the decent mid-size market infrastructure that rugby union has had built here (thanks to our provincial RU history), then yes.

At the moment it's up to the whims of existing clubs, and one of the things this can deliver is certainty to mid-sized NZ markets that they at least get a game each year, and are not at the mercy of individual clubs' priorities.

Tigers were the only ones who did it last year

Nrl being proactive to grow rugby league in nz rather than waiting for an nrl club to do it

Better than taking games to Darwin imo like the eels used to do

The nrl should also look at doing it for country areas in nsw and qld for clubs who don’t take home games to nz

I can imagine we'd be quite an attractive option to replace those Perth games, given that a) we have a strong heritage & culture in the rugby codes and b) we have a plethora of mid-size (18k-30k) rugby stadiums thanks to long standing provincial RU teams which are no longer off-limits to league.

What has happened in Perth is a mix. The WA govt buys the double header event (as part of origin package I suspect)_ and pays the NRL for it who then pay the teams taking part. They also buy games directly from clubs ie Dolphins current ones to sell games to WA.

Wellington RL team would likely follow the Canes rotating games between Napier/Palmy and New Plymouth. Napier and Palmy kinda kills 2 birds with it being easy enough to travel 1.5ish hours between the 2 for a 1 off, Naki is a bit more of a mission

You’re comparing the NRL season to the Super Rugby season which is comparing apples with oranges.
The NZ rugby deal includes 16 weeks of Super Rugby + 8 Weeks of Women’s SR + 12 weeks of Both Men’s and Women’s NPC + 7 weeks of both men’s and Women’s Sevens + 12 All Black Test as well as What ever the Black ferns +Maori+ NZA play. Pretty Much January is the only Month with no content.
I’ve seen you comment a number of times that NZ posters were saying the sky bid for NRL would be lower? All I remember seeing is a few saying sky has limited funds and it would be highly unlikely that NZ2 would double the Bid- The reduced Union bid could be due to decreased interest but it could equally be due to sky struggling financially.
