Newton keen to win premiership at Storm

May 30, 2007 - 1:48PM

Clint Newton has declared himself 100 per cent committed to helping Melbourne win the NRL premiership just two days after walking out on Newcastle.
Newton quit the Knights on Monday, less than 24 hours after the club's 71-6 record loss to reigning premiers Brisbane, unhappy the club hadn't offered him a contract for next season and feeling coach Brian Smith didn't want him.

The 25-year-old forward was signed by the Storm on Tuesday for the remainder of the season, covering for the loss of State of Origin prop Antonio Kaufusi (knee - season) and backrower Michael Crocker (shoulder) who won't return until very late this year.
Newton will move to Melbourne at the weekend and join his new teammates for his first training session early next week, but already he is keen to repay the faith the Storm have shown in picking him up midseason.

"It's a pretty big thing for a coach and bunch of players to accept a player halfway through the season who has done nothing with them," Newton told Sydney radio 2KY.
"For me to have that opportunity I'm pretty humbled by it especially considering where their standing is in the game.
"That's why I've got a job to do to return the faith they've shown in me to become part of their side.

"My preference is 100 per cent to be committed to the Melbourne Storm which I will be for the remainder of the season and whatever happens after that is out of my control.
"What I know is I will be busting my arse for the Melbourne Storm and try and help them win a premiership."

Newton refused to take a parting shot at Newcastle coach Brian Smith, despite Smith being responsible for him leaving the club so abruptly.
"I think he is tactically and technically the best coach I have had," said Newton.
"I certainly wouldn't say he is a bad coach, but obviously everyone sort of goes off different people different ways.

"Under (former coach) Michael Hagan I played my best football and under Brian Smith I probably haven't played my best football.
"For me personally I don't think it was a good mix and I'm looking forward to going down to Melbourne and being part of their side under Craig Bellamy."

Now I didn't jump on the "Newton hate wagon" as quick as others, BUT, the comments in bold have me somewhat pissed off.

He says he knows he may not be at the Storm next season, same as when he was with the Knights...

YET, he is prepared to bust his arse for them for the remainder of the season and leave us hanging?

That annoys me A LOT!

He's been playing like a busted arse!

Best scenario would be 2007 GF, Knights vs Storm, last 10 seconds, Gidley out wide runs over the traitor to score the winning try!

Won't happen but wouldn't it be sweet?

Honestly, what do you expect him to say?

'I'm hoping 100% to sit on my arse and do nothing for the rest of the year'? Of course he's going to he's going to try and help them win a premiership - that's what he's been hired for, and what they'd expect of him.

Can you imagine the reaction if he fronted up to the interview and told them he didn't give a rat's arse about the Storm and just wanted in for the paycheck?

All players say that when they join a new club, it's part of the commitment to his new teammates and coach. He handled the questions about Smith very well, as we all know Smith is the reason he left.

I don't care what he said for the Storm.

It's just that it's basically him contradicting himself.

He said, he wanted to be wanted, and because Smith didnt see him in plans for next year all he done was get to his 100th game and then leave right away because he couldnt play his best if he wasnt wanted.

NOW... Again so far the Storm have no intentions on keeping him next year, or they would have snapped him up for a couple of years.

And he says he will give 100% and is focused on this year and wants to help THEM win a premiership.

So basically.. why couldnt he do what he claims he will do there, here ?

Maybe something to do with the fact that he's appreciated at the Storm.

What do you mean by that?

They don't know him down there.

Here he has everyone he knows, long time friends and all.

To me it looks like the exact same situation, except he didnt like that he was told he isnt going to get an offer from us just yet?

Well at Newcastle he's playing for a coach who doesn't rate him and wants to see the back of him.

At Melbourne they jumped at the chance to sign him. Being forced out by salary cap restrictions is different from being told you're crap.

Fair enough, but im viewing this whole situation differently.

From what ive heard now, I beleive he had a bit of a sook about some comments, mostly the he should consider offers and they havnt got a contract for him just yet.

I think you see it as Smith said he didnt want him and that's it.

I'm fairly confident Smith did mean that.

He was pretty blunt about the matter when interviewed on NRL on Fox tonight.

He also said that Woolnough and Perry were not part of his plans for the future and that they would definitely not be re-signed.

You accused me of not knowing the facts but it's obvious that you lend your ear to the Knights inner circle with that comment!

I'd say this deal was done around City/Country time. Probably went something like this:

Bellamy: How's things going at Newcastle Clint?

Traitor: They look like giving me the arse next year. I wanna play atleast 100 games for the Knights!

B: We'd love you down at the Storm. Have a think about it. Maybe you could play your ton and still come join us.

T: But I have a contract until the end of the year.

B: Mate, what's a contract worth? We have no ethics down Melbourne. Look how we got Steve Turner out of his. Just give us the word and we'll help you renig on it in a flash! We could say that you signed one with us as well. Let me sort the details out.

T: Hmmmmmmm..........

And the rest is history!

Firstly, it is a known fact that Smith wasn't going to offer him a contract and he even said today in the interview that he never thought Newton was worth retaining. That pretty much defines not being rated or wanted.

Secondly, what a great conspiracy theory! Doesn't quite makes sense, but it's entertaining none the less  But...what does that have to do with what we're talking about?

JM is like Doctor House... almost everyone hates his directness of opinion, but most of the time he is right

I resent that quote. You're not nearly misanthropic enough to be like Gregory House
