The 6pm Friday game and TV controlling game-scheduling are the same problem.

Work patterns may have changed, but every club bar Warriors will still draw lower at 6pm than 8pm.
Problem is there are only so many individual tv slots. If you’re not playing a game Friday 6pm when are you playing. Arguably Monday nights were worse for attending than friday.

Why let TV companies demand a separate timeslot for every single game? AFL don't.

Schedule two Friday 8pm games. Nine and Fox bid for one game each. Genuine competitive tendering.

How does AFL go in the ratings by doing that?

You are halving the viewers by doing that.
Doesn't appear to worry AFL. Nor reduce the value of their deal.

The number of viewers wouldn't be halved. Three Friday NRL TV broadcasts, two showing the same game. Factor in the evidence that a lot of casual fans tune in to watch particular teams.

All that's currently gained is the distinct 6pm Fox rating. Set against lost revenue from lower crowds.

Not necessarily. Depends on negotiations and negotiators.
Nrl won’t be doing anything to weaken its position vs afl

the 20 team comp will be the first time in 30 years we have a comp with more teams than afl

there are still loads of unique tv times anyway

nz2 can share Friday 6 pm with the warriors

Sat 930
Sun 630
Sunday midday
Or the one foxtel want Monday night football
Perth will take sun 630 but also maybe sat and fri 930 potentially

Once the cats out the bag there’s no way of getting it back in without tv screwing over the value as they’ll feel they are getting a lessor value product. We’ve made our bed.

It’ll be interesting to see how Sunday 6pm or 6.30pm plays out for crowds. I wouldn’t think it would be popular on the east coast?

Because of ads and how the TV deal was setup. Ch7 gets an Adelaide and Perth game FTA every week. It allows them to target advertisers

Ch9 used to do a QLD and NSW Fri night game and the delayed one rated so poorly

fox get mostly non exclusive games that nobody wants to watch

why their pay tv ratings are abominable

Martin Medcraf, Foxtel Media sport sales and partnerships director, explained: “The AFL and NRL have both had thrilling seasons this year and it’s clear that the fans have loved the excitement from the very start. In early April, the second annual AFL Gather Round broke AFL streaming records across Kayo Sports, with a record of 252 million minutes viewed. This made the 2024 Gather Round the #1 streamed AFL round of all time.

“With the NRL, the Vegas Round matches featuring the Sea Eagles vs the Rabbitohs and the Roosters vs the Broncos are the top two rating matches for the season, so far.”

AFL and NRL both grew audience significantly

Medcraf continued: “The enthusiasm continued from there. The AFL 2024 season has seen an increase of 33% on 2023, with an average audience of 397,000. Last Sunday’s Fremantle vs Port Adelaide game led the season with an average audience of 710,000 across Kantar STB and streaming VPM, closely followed by the Carlton vs St Kilda game at 685,000.

NRL rounds 1-25 followed suit with an average audience of 483,000, +18% from last season.

Foxtel Media sponsorship campaigns overdeliver

Viewing numbers indicate the audience has been happy with the coverage. A total of 57 sponsorship packagers sold have also given advertisers reason to be pleased, said Medcraf.

“The viewer success is backed by incredible sponsor engagement, with 30 sponsors for the AFL season and 27 for the NRL. Moreover, all sponsors have been able to campaign plan using Kantar Media analysed viewing data for the most accurate audience insights. In fact, every campaign is on track to overdeliver for the season based on these insights.

yeh wasnt thinking the perth games in that slot, more so the 15 or more other weeks perth wont be in that slot at home.

Is there a break down of crowds by time slot for the season anywhere?

That’s exactly the point. The games at 6pm rate well. It’s a matter of scheduling the right games to maximise the crowds and tv audience. Smith was a good guy.

So because The NRL is by far the most watched sport on STV, you then bring crowds into it.
😂😂😂😂😂It’s the standard AFL fan ploy to shift onto something that They are winning.
This is a TV deal discussion.

Cheers, thats interesting not a huge amount of difference in any slot with the Sunday 6pm being the worse. Have to say Im surprised the Friday 6pm was so well attended. Of course what clubs are playing in them obviously makes a big difference. ie If Broncos are primarily in one slot it will artificially inflate it and if Sharks in one slot it will artificially bring it down in regards to other clubs performances.

Be interesting to see a club by time slot breakdown!
