The 6pm Friday game and TV controlling game-scheduling are the same problem.

Work patterns may have changed, but every club bar Warriors will still draw lower at 6pm than 8pm.
Problem is there are only so many individual tv slots. If you’re not playing a game Friday 6pm when are you playing. Arguably Monday nights were worse for attending than friday.

Why let TV companies demand a separate timeslot for every single game? AFL don't.

Schedule two Friday 8pm games. Nine and Fox bid for one game each. Genuine competitive tendering.

How does AFL go in the ratings by doing that?

You are halving the viewers by doing that.
Doesn't appear to worry AFL. Nor reduce the value of their deal.

The number of viewers wouldn't be halved. Three Friday NRL TV broadcasts, two showing the same game. Factor in the evidence that a lot of casual fans tune in to watch particular teams.

All that's currently gained is the distinct 6pm Fox rating. Set against lost revenue from lower crowds.

Not necessarily. Depends on negotiations and negotiators.
Nrl won’t be doing anything to weaken its position vs afl

the 20 team comp will be the first time in 30 years we have a comp with more teams than afl

there are still loads of unique tv times anyway

nz2 can share Friday 6 pm with the warriors

Sat 930
Sun 630
Sunday midday
Or the one foxtel want Monday night football
Perth will take sun 630 but also maybe sat and fri 930 potentially

Once the cats out the bag there’s no way of getting it back in without tv screwing over the value as they’ll feel they are getting a lessor value product. We’ve made our bed.
