Expansion to Newcastle and Nth Qld will also be expensive. And they won't bring in huge tv dollars either.

Coming from Newcastle, I just don’t see it happening. You would need to build a stadium or massively upgrade No 1 Sportsground plus the Knights have struggled on the commercial side so I don’t see how you could have a side in the two biggest winter sport competitions in Australia in a city our size - simply not big enough and probably not so for at least another twenty or thirty years.

Not knowing a lot about North Queensland but considering the size of Townsville, I’d suspect the same thing for them.

As I said earlier in the thread, eventually the TV money will reach the top.

RL has League's clubs now going after outside revenue sources. All those areas you spoke off won't draw the crowds or memberships the Melbourne teams do.

As such they will struggle when it hits that point

When your revenue is going to hit $900mill plus a year you can put a team wherever you like for however long you need to pay for it!

Yeah pretty much echo the entire post. Coming from Wollongong, the AFL would need North Dalton Park to be hugely upgraded. That's of course if it's the right location.

Having teams in regional areas does represent it's challenges. The prime example of it is the Gold Coast where teams go to die or not do anything significant.

Afl model is not built on regional representation. Too small crowds, not enough corporate funding and doesn’t generate metro tv Money.
They didnt really want to go to tassie as it’s too small but the govt has now given them little option. That will mean they will have to have a team 20 at some point. If canberra govt puts its hand in its pocket it could be there or more likely it will be perth 3 in years to come or if they feel there is long term value in nz I wouldn’t put it past them to use some of their new found riches to bankroll a club there. The other option is they close down suns and go back to 18 but seems unlikely.

hopefully nrl has learnt that to get big $’s one of the things you need is strong reach into the 5 metro markets. That should make perth a certainty for club 18 and some serious ground work and investment in Adelaide to get it ready for a few years time.

No 1 sportground is in a top location unlike McDonald jones

if I were afl I would go for Newcastle or nz

So we now know

1. Extra round of afl … 20 million value
2. Extra team 30 million value

which means without these the afl really only got something like a 50 million pa increase for the tv deals

also shows how reactionary they are adding teams after the nrl expands

You would have to put in a lot of money with No 1 Sportsground to make it suitable. Newcastle in my opinion is just not big enough really - you only have to look at how much the Knights have struggled financially and they are easily the biggest thing in the Newcastle/Hunter region.

In terms of NZ though, it would be something as a RL fan I would hate for them to do. They have the money and unlike our game they would seriously invest in it.

It wouldn’t affect us

if they had a team in Wellington and we added christchurch then the two Aussie sports could basically break open the entire market between then

Why would we want to give market share to them? NZ and the Islands (and international football) is our competitive advantage. We are definitely not in front in Australia

Union is never getting take over in NZ. That’s an unrealistic goal. It is akin to fumbleball saying they are going to take over Sydney or us taking over Melbourne. All Blacks are a religion over there. Also, if they take share away from Union, they are still taking share away from us as well.

We get more viewers but they get much bigger crowds and much bigger TV revenue.

15 nrl clubs got more viewers last year than 18 afl clubs. That’s a dead set joke for afl

add average viewers to average crowds and its rugby league first

they don’t get more than us in tv deals either and won’t when our deal gets redone

but they do get good crowds and memberships that’s their sole area of dominance I’ll give them that

and union is vulnerable in nz. Their gdp is equivalent to wa. The strength of the nrl could crush them if they focused on it (I’m talking clubs level, the all blacks can still tour gb and France and make money)

I don't know what's sadder. The absolute stupidity and delusion of this idiot or the fact he's propped up by @Phil McGrawhan, @MugaB, @AlwaysGreen and other nutcases.
