It’s pretty much what will afl get near time

nrl needs to keep adding teams and generating more content for tv

That is it. We now know AFL added Magic Round and no doubt more to come.

Team 18 alone gets over the $500m mark

Tasmania too

the issue I have is gill didn’t talk about all the extra stuff he had to offer when the initial bids were poor

it was all geared towards a fairytale announcement right on the eve of the nrl finals

I genuinely am not fussed with afl as a threat to rugby league

as long as we keep adding teams we will be number one by a long way. Afl can’t really expand any place that isn’t going to cost a billion dollars to establish

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter but it is frustrating when so called Rugby League fans and some players for that matter. Don't look at the whole details before saying RL got a bad deal

Some people who claim to be rugby league fans really should be following other sports the game doesn’t need them one bit

they get a rise out of putting the boot into rugby league

but when the game becomes number one again they just jump on the bandwagon

It is players too

Christian Welsch mentioned something about the difference in the deals
Then was against extending the season... yet that is how it was achieved.

He is someone who should research before speaking

No they shouldn’t ignore them, they should encourage them to bid big, that way nine and fox will have to pay what the games worth To keep it!
I'd like our game to go with Ch10/Paramount+, but it and the other tier one sports have a history of shunning Australia's third commercial network. We need media reform to prevent News Ltd and Ch9 from using their duoploy of the print media to gain an unfair advantage in broadcast deals.

Both categories they are getting unders

reality is our tv deal should be way more than afl and it’s not

and we underperform afl a long way in sponsors

the current leadership are doing the rights things and heading that game in the right direction
I would like to see how much revenue AFL were getting compared to the ARL before the SL War

The NRL is over $400m. How much over is the question.

AFL for the next 2 seasons sits at $473m ( including Telstra)

That now includes the extra round of Magic Round thrown in for free ( maybe @The_Wookie can confirm? Maybe I missed the extra TV money )

Very minimal gap if any for the crossover years, That is even better deal for AFL TV now that the extra round is added

What extra content NRL can provide will see how close they get to the unknown TV only rights of AFL's new deal
It’s $2 mill over.
ch9 $130mill
skynz $32mill
fox $240mill

yes it is then for the final three years of our deal the gap becomes a chasm. the gap in media revenue for the next deal period is:
23 $70mill
24 $70mill
25 $240mill
26 $240mill
27 $240mill

add in the nrl digital profit, around $10mill a year. and take out the $25mill radio rights in the ch9 deal.

that is a total of around $835million over the next 5 years. Really looking forward to seeing the tricks pistol Pete pulls pulls of his sleeve to cover that lol!

our best hope is to sit tight, take the loss on the chin, sack off pistol Pete, work hard to grow more interest in the game over next three seasons, announce perth for 2028 and in 2025/26 go to open market selling an 18 team comp for ‘28 onwards. We might get around $500mill which is still massively behind afl but tbh we’ve lost the revenue war for the foreseeable future as far as I can see,

Of course the AFL fan includes Telstra money including wifi updates into a discussion about TV money

Not to mention has no idea what the NRL deal is

For those who want to compare or use other codes as a guide. Telstra isn't part of it because TV aren't paying that part.

It is revenue but not TV money

It’s digital revenue which is media.
but if you want to compare purely tv revenue
approx
$397mill v $585mill 2025-2027. “Only” a gap of $188mill a year, sigh. Pistol Pete smoked us like a kipper!

Link to these breakdowns?

Shouldn't be too hard... of course the whole forum knows you are full of shit.

AFL over $4bill cash afl stated over 7 years ($571mill a year)
$643 mill a year as stated total. It’s being conservative approximating that $575 of that $643mill is tv revenue. Hard to see telstra paying more than $68mill a year cash and contra/in kind. Some of the telstra value is tv as well as they retain on demand, replays and highlight digital rights for streaming Afl games.

this has the foxtel/seven cash component at $600mill a year but that seems a bit overs Imo. It’s more likely to be $575-600mill a year cash and contra For seven/fox.

“But as afternoon turned into evening, the final contours of the deal with Seven and Foxtel became clear. Excluding the free advertising attached to broadcast deals known as contra, the Seven-Foxtel bid came to roughly $600 million in cash each year over seven years, according to several participants.”

NRL a little over $2bill as stated over 5 years
nine reported $130mill cash and contra inc $5mill radio rights ($115mill cash)
sky reported $32mill a year cash and contra
leaves fox $240mill cash and contra

as you well know and I’ve linked many times now.

but all is not lost: Mr V’Landys said the NRL would be negotiating the next rights to 2031 “pretty soon” and assured the game “we’ve got a few things up our sleeves”.

sigh

Except the AFL website states Telstra which isn't in the article.

Telstra was $50m a year previously. Now it is $43m? Which includes the Wifi upgrades to Marvel....
