Say afl 550 million we get 430 million now

team 18 and nrlw, end of season internationals

should match it

heck even if we get 520 milllion we aren’t funding the giants or the suns whose loses go up every year

I'd rather the international tv money be split between the relevant countries regardless $500m is realistic goal.

I wonder how much of that deal relies on a Tassie team being added? If it doesn’t go ahead the outcome might be interesting. Looking at it from that perspective the afl may not have the Tasmanian government as much over the barrel as the government thinks it does

the deal anticipates it, but doesnt require it.

It won’t be

otherwise the arlc won’t sanction it

the players will get generous match payments and the profit will go to the arlc

It’s all about making more money for the arlc otherwise they don’t do it

i don’t even trust the international board to run it properly or not waste the money

International RL needs money. So ARLC keeping all TV money doesn't change that

They are a money pit

let them focus on the world cups

if the arlc get the money for it then they will make sure it’s on every year

all the money in internationals is from teams of nrl players playing each other

Where would the new producers come from for the freshen up though? Take ch10 they have almost no sport so very likely bring the tired coverage across with them.

Fox Sports do other sports that the good ones would be re-assigned to other sports.

Leaves you with the same old ones or new young inexperienced ones that may or may not do a worse job, The best thing would be game 9 go to another one to get some experience up 1st

I think Doc Brown did suggest that game 9 could go to another network, on the basis that an 18th team comes in, towards the end of this deal (2023-2027) and Fox weren't interested. Or words to that effect.

At the end of the day, negotiations will most likely occur around 2025 or 2026. For better or for worse, what will Stan and Paramount look like?

The NRL would definitely want them to be around, if anything to drive the price up.

But it would be nice if the NRL got a good deal in terms of accessibility and dollars, and GOT AWAY from Nine and Fox. Both have taken the NRL for granted for a long time.

Back in 2020, the Nine CEO at the time did humiliate the NRL with those press statements about having a bloated head office, while Fox "prefers AFL".

The Nine/ Fox duopoly can't last forever.

Its essentially outside the current deal, so any extra matches can theoretically be sold to whoever the NRL want.

I think it all might happen this year potentially

if the dolphins aren’t terrible then they will announce the winning bidder this year and start talking to tv networks on the basis of 18 teams plus internationals and nrlw expanding

Players shouldn't have to pay their own insurance to play in the World Cup

That is what they do in the NFL and eventually the rights will get too expensive for one place.

Paramount plus has the upside of being international and has decent content, Is it possible to use a FTA bandwith to stream the games into pubs?

Stan I see gone in 2 years but if they are here, wouldn't it be extension of the tired FTA coverage?

If Ten/Paramount have it nailed down with dollars, accessibility and service, then that would be the best outcome for the game. They would give the code a different outlook.

But deep down, at least one of Nine or Fox gets it again. Most likely, it's the same two with Ten/Paramount missing out:(.

I just dont see the NRL going with Paramount unless theres a big lift in both their coverage and reputation. Or more money than they can resist. Stan has union and the grand slam tennis audiences, and the Olympics coming up, they arent going anywhere.

Whats really screwing the bidding up is Seven not having a paid sub service after killing off the Presto joint venture

They seem the better option in theory. I don't watch the panel shows so I can't comment on whether they need to improve aswell.

Atleast you know you get a decent production and a service that works if that stays the same

The fact cricket went back to ch7 after the court case, Says all you need to know about that service.

Can 'events' only be viable? They have 150k sub now and ch9 also shows those programs.

For them losing the last 2 contracts for content will lose them customers and slowly will die out.

It would be interesting to see if 7 plus is working in its form. Maybe ch9 are better off going down the same route with 9now

It was 150,000 subs in May 2021 just for Stan Sport. Stan has 2.3m subscribers as of August 2021. Its not going anywhere, and just reported 2.5m

7plus being able to show AFL under the 2027 deal is going to be a big deal for Seven. Plus they are getting some streaming for the cricket under the new deal as well I understand. It went gangbusters over the Olympics.

At one stage I think we all thought Stan would go. I’ve kept it on suspicion as it has just enough good content to keep it. Stan Sport? Nup.

They won’t in the future as it made a profit

Can you imagine the money doesn’t go the arlc and a player gets injured

then next year the clubs will be pulling players for the tournament

at least if the arlc is banking off it the clubs will respect it more

And yes I know clubs aren’t supposed to stand down players from internationals but they all do

between growing the international game in the pacific and adding potentially another 3 new clubs rugby league is laying a platform that will pay off for decades
