Did he? or was the FTA offer so good that it was worth that risk? like I said the deal only ended up $205mill in total. He had already got $185mill locked away in the bank from just FTA. We only needed to get Fox, pssed off or not, to stump up HALF what they ended up paying and we'd have been 25% ahead in the total deal. It was the best chance we had of overtaking AFL in tv deals.
Fox cant afford to walk away from NRL. The sooner we learn this fact the better off the game will be!
You are such a flop

nine were never going to pay 185 million

nine ended up paying 95 million effectively after they sold the sat game and got a discount for streaming

Murdoch is a ruthless bastard but the question is how long do you let the guy walk over you? Smith knew there was real interest from elsewhere but 10’s package failed because some higher ups got cold feet, allegedly due to the influence of Satan Jnr. They shat themselves that they’d have to go back to deal with Foxtel in Round 2 and get a lowball bid.

But it’s a whole new ballgame with Paramount Global involved with 10 now, so who knows the future. You’ve now got F2A and Subscription as one bidder. That dependency on Foxtel to do the subscription part is no longer there. And it should be obvious to anyone that if 10 fails to obtain a major sport in the next decade, they won’t have a future.

As for Vlandys and Covid, I mean who in 2018 would have predicted the world would basically shut down two years later? You’re now a sports league boss basing your business model of a vaccine rollout which is out of your control. We’re all smart in hindsight but I cut him some slack there.
What ten package ?

nine already had the fta locked up

Their where no other bidders for the the pay tv rights

the tv deal before we almost signed with ten then changed it last minute back to nine

I think you are conflating gambling advertising with the act of gambling itself.

Gambling, in some form, will go on just like ciggies, but curbing the advertisement is likely.

All the big sports, Hell throw in the media as a whole would form an alliance and kill any government plan. Due to the amount of revenue lost

History of nrl tv deals

1. arl man whittacker … totally clueless, pathetic tv deals locked in to pay back for super league

2. Gallop a bit better. Thought he signed a mammoth deal then afl got way more a few months later. Justified it as they deserve more as they have more teams in metro markets

3. arl commission formed / news ltd leave … only decent tv deal we’ve had since nrl was formed. News ltd we’re afraid of the games indep

4. Smith totally stuffed up that momentum and set us back again into weakness

5. Vlanyds was afraid of covid and got played by networks they would cut off payments. Now stuck in a long term deal

nrl has had one excellent tv deal since 98 and still managed to proposer regardless

you really dont understand do you? Ch9 were signed and sealed to deliver $185million to the NRL every year for 5 years. Their strategy to recoup some of that back was to on sell saturday night and simu cast rights to Fox. That didnt change the FACT NRL would have received $185mill from Ch9 a year.

The deal only ended up $205mill after Smith was sacked.
We literally only had to get more than $20mill a year from Fox or someone else to have been ahead. How can you not understand this???

The nine contract had a clause that if the nrl agreed to stream their games on fox then they would only pay 125 million

Link?
and if true? Even better, Fox had to cover the $60mill gap if it wanted streaming rights or else Nine got streaming rights. Sounds let it was set up perfectly to screw Fox for max $'s. Hmm I wonder why they got Smith sacked?

Ch9 paying $125mill for FTA games and $60mill for streaming rights still put NRL in a very strong position. Fox could have stumped up for streaming and STV or just STV at a cheaper rate. Sounds like Smith knew what he was doing after all.

Foxtel didn’t cover the streaming gap

haha, my point exactly! Take the $185mill from FTA and if Fox want to cover the streaming of $60mill and say $40mill for STV then we still come out ahead by $20mill extra and ahead of AFL for the first time! If FTA want to keep streaming and pay $185mill then anything over $20mill from STV or elsewhere and we are still ahead! We couldn't lose!! Smith was a genius.

Not keeping the Ch9 deal in place was the second most stupid move by the NRL ever, only bettered by the Vlandy covid extension.

The same countries that take money from companies who have far worse practices then a social bet
eh? You can argue the social justice of banning harmful practices till the cows come home but the stark reality is gambling is a horrible industry that destroys lives in those countries (again you can argue the moral compass of global impact) and those countries are now stepping up and doing something about it.

Its literally FACT. $185mil a year FTA in the bank.
That and the final amount after Smith was sacked of $205mill is the only FACTS.
So he got sacked for delivering the biggest FTA in history and afterwards we only ended up with $20million more TOTAL. That deal should have comfortably hit $235mill plus if Smith had been allowed to take on Fox.
What a clusterfck outcome that was.
We allowed ourselves to be screwed by News ltd. Spin it however you want.

Those are the FACTS. You dont like them, thats on you.
Smith delivered the greatest FTA deal in sports history by a long long way.
Fox had him sacked, Fox then screwed us and we ended up with $30mill plus less than we could have if Smith had been given a shot at them.
I can see why they didnt want that. You sure are some News ltd apologist for a RL fan!

Well we’re talking years ago so my memory is fuzzy but when the NRL rights were being negotiated, 10 were in the middle of a threeway takeover tussle. But it was flagged that the lack of major sporting rights was dragging down their bid values. So they looked at buying all 8 NRL games and then off selling to Foxtel. However, Satan Jnr was a major shareholder and Foxtel had the highest takeover bid. It could have ended in a scenario where they’d be selling the rights back to their future owners. A lot of Murdoch threats. A couple of directors got cold feet. Thing fell apart.
