News Corp will also have the right to sub-license a Saturday afternoon game which is believed to be worth around $30 million per season, which will almost certainly go to Network Ten should the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission sign off on a mooted deal for Foxtel to take a 15 per cent stake in the struggling network.

Channel Ten is desperate to acquire whatever big-time sport it can. Given the affiliation it will likely have with Foxtel (ACCC approval pending) they would be a good chance to get back into the AFL broadcasting scene for the first time since 2011.

I think they are used to just riding rough shod over RL tbh. Since 1996 they have fked the game any way they pleased and they think their sht house tactics will still get them want they want. By bullying the NRL they think it will cave in to them. Hopefully the game is made of sterner stuff these days, I really really hope Smiths departure had nothing to do with news ltd pressure, and we make them pay for all this ridiculous attacks on the game. f**k it I'd take whatever Optus is offering at this point just to screw them.

Actually what I said was "I hope that news weren't the reason" I have no idea if they were or weren't. Timing is Suss and no reason for his departure in the middle of important period for the game has been given so we are left to make guesses. Grant has said he is dissapointed he left without telling us why he left. Of course he is going to say it had nothing to do with news led pressure, anything else would be a complete admission of weakness. Of course it could well be the case it had nothing to do with the negotiations, as I said I HOPE SO.

Don't know too many ceo's though who would leave a $million a year position in the middle of the most important strategic time unless they are :
1. Pushed
2. So sick of tne place they've had enough
3. They've had a better offer.
4. Personal reasons ie ill health, family needs etc.

They'll have done the maths and know what it is worth to them. Optus adds a greater imperative not to low ball the offer. NRL just needs to hold its nerve.

And that's the crux of it. As if it wasn't glaringly obvious. You just can't come to grips with the fact that the ARLC had a responsibility to its current stakeholders first and foremost. Also, they have to prioritise things and Perth wasn't a priority. Tough but that's business.

Why do I think Smith left? I have no idea and I'm not going to presume why because I don't know. The most logical explanation I've seen from people on here is that he's a CEO, and most CEOs move on fairly quickly. It's what they do. Especially CEOs like Smith who come in to businesses looking for change and going through a transition.

News journalists claim that they demanded Smith be sacked because of his negotiations? Come on. Does anyone honestly think that's remotely true? News would risk losing hundreds of millions of dollars if they didn't get the rights to the NRL and they would have to answer to their shareholders. Do you seriously think they would risk losing that because they didn't like David Smith? Is he the toughest negotiator they've ever dealt with? Don't be so naive. News would not and could not demand a CEO be sacked from another company. No more than we could demand Julian Clarke be sacked as News Corp Australia CEO.
