I'd imagine it'd be a tad harder to extort government funding in NZ too. Not too sure the old 'but we're Australia's indigenous game™!' would go over too well...

Just scanned the news limited newspapers in the local library. the journos are indulging in an afl love fest anybody can see through. All say the nrl deal is bad and the Australian is stating there must be two new teams 'and give them to fox sports '. That way Smith 'could come out of it being a hero' . yes folks it's that blatant.

I haven't read the Aus lately, and I never go near the Terrorgraph, but how would Smith "give the new teams to Fox Sports" if the whole point of this first phase was to have control of the schedule?

Who knows? Nothing printed by news limited is logical about this. They are like a screaming pack of hyenas.

One of those articles mentioned he's already talked to Google. When was this? Any talk on what was discussed as to their options they can bring?

Ok found it. Everyone calm down.

Can't see that happening in a big way. Everyone says Fox needs the NRL. Does Google?
These big time businessmen like the Murdochs etc wouldn't help a blind duck into a pond without first seeing what benefit they will get from it. They'd feel right now the NRL has back stabbed them hence his strange appearance and fighting words at the AFL's press conference.
I'm thinking right now he'll go to war now for the AFL and cut the NRL out of any big deal they could've had.

Hope Smith has hung himself out to dry. Starting to look that way.

Google doesn't "need" the NRL, but the NRL would be a very clever market entry strategy for them if they were genuinely interested. And let's face it, New Ltd is rich, but Google is richer...

Google is News Corp's greatest enemy, would be awesome payback if Smith could manage the impossible and stitch up a deal with them.

Google? Don't you mean Alphabet? :p

They are making forays into our TV market already though, so this could be an effective opening salvo to Fox if they are after real market share.

Both.

Must be some type of pay packet these arseholes are getting if they continually go against any common sense and against what they actually believe, sell your souls you pack of blood sucking vultures, sell your soul.

I would love to hear just one news employee state, naaaa sick of this shit, I can get a job elsewhere, so here is the real lowdown blah blah blah. Seems non have the balls or the cl*t to stand up and actually write what they feel and believe, what a bunch of cowards.

The old kent isn't going to live forever you pack of wimps in the media, grow a set or get a job more suited. I f**king hate liars!

News control ~80% of Australian newspaper circulation so they'd be too scared that they'd be unemployable.

Something that hasn't been mentioned on this thread is the Jarryd Hayne factor. If he becomes an established NFL star I would think there will be many Americans interested in the game he played previously. Properly marketed by the NRL a new or existing streaming service could piggy back off Hayne and bring the NRL a host of new customers from a country where right now there are only a few rugby league fans.

It's mr rent-a-quote, don't think he was involved in broadcast negotiations last time either, only involved with Gallop up until the ARLC took over negotiations and handed them to Graeme Samuel.

Oh right, yeah I forgot they did that.

Well given how confident Smith has been about all this, maybe he knows something we don't.

It would be pretty revolutionary were it to happen though

If you watch the video Stensholt has an each way bet but thinks they'll get there in the end. He even thinks it will be 9 games live too.

There's a rumour going around about another clause that will put pressure on Fox to bid higher than previously.

Care to elaborate at all?

Cheers doc.

Safe to say it is a lot higher than the $30-$50 million that Roy reported? 9 having complete rights would be massive for the NRL, especially if all matches are on FTA nation-wide. I would sign up to Stan in a heartbeat if they started adding a comprehensive catalog of old matches and other Rugby League related content
