It doesn't 'have to' remain on Wednesdays at all.

There will be NRL free weekends in the future, it is only a matter of time. Origin will be played on Saturday or Sunday nights with other rep games played on that weekend. It's what is best for our sport!

But other sports will be. Why dilute the viewers by making it compete with other codes. On a Wednesday it means all eyes on RL.

What " matter of time" period are you talking about?

It won't be during the next TV deal that will run 2018-2022 ( other than the current ANZAC test weekend)

And what is the round of rep games (x 3 )you propose even after that?

It could well be possibly in the next TV deal. A lot will depend on Shane richardsons report into the state of the game.

The other rep games have been talked about thoroughly on here already. NZ origins, NZ v PI, pacific cups, pac test series, NZ v eng, 20's origin, NZ & PI 20's, city/country..... Plenty of games to fill in 3 weekends of rep footy.

Who cares what other sports are doing? Sunday night is the biggest rating night for TV, viewers won't be diluted.

The afl will put a blockbuster against it and ratings will suffer. It's the one thing we do better than anyone else and you wanna tinker with it. That's Gallop-esq.

We don't do it better than anyone else. NRL teams play without their best players, players back up and sometimes are forced to play 3 games in 9 days, other nations don't have the opportunity to play rep footy and develop their players further, a lot of the best NRL players are not even eligible for origin and numerous other opportunities to grow our sport are being ignored. Origin is great and is probably the biggest sporting event in Australia annually now, but the entire period is a drain on the NRL and could be done so much better. A few changes wouldn't hurt origin one bit but it would benefit rugby league immensely!

The afl clubs bitched about their SOO and it got killed off. Thankfully the desire for ratings will keep our on Wednesdays.

Well we would have to start the season a month and a half earlier just to accommodate it.

Drop the 2 byes for each club and reduce the NRL from 12 home games to 11...

The season would be extended by 1 week. (assuming we keep the ANZAC Test weekend as well)

This is basically my reasoning...

The Origin series itself cant get much better, but the way we treat the comp around it needs a serious rethink. Stop the NRL for 5 week, play Origin 1st/3r/5th week and fill in the gaps with international games.

Then start the NRL back up in the post-Origin high and the Round 1 feel of being back after the break for the run home to the finals.

I'm sure that the other codes would love a 5 week NRL break ...

I dont understand why the ARLC should be worried about this...

Are we so terrified that the VFL would take over during this short break?? Is Origin not enough on its own to consume the Sports pages?? Is the loyalty of the RL fanbase so flimsy...

But wait... we will have PNG v Tonga to watch

The international game will never develop if its not given a chance...

Sure, that sounds like a shitty matchup, but its no better than "Cowboys v Raiders" and at least the International has a genuine opportunity to grow.

An absolute stinker of an idea.

Origin has to remain on a Wednesday.
I'd just change the time in between games to 2 weeks. Have the weekend 'rep round' after origin minus city v country. Make it an international rep round (sort of). Kiwi v Aus Test Friday night, fiji, png, samoa, tonga play sat night and Sunday can be NSW Res v QLD Residents.

I think we are actually in agreement....

Origin on Wednesday, but stop the NRL so there isnt a massive drain on interest as we compete with ourselves. Then use the opportunity to promote the up-and-coming International game.

It doesn't 'have to' remain on Wednesdays at all.

There will be NRL free weekends in the future, it is only a matter of time. Origin will be played on Saturday or Sunday nights with other rep games played on that weekend. It's what is best for our sport!

I disagree....

The crowd is the best it could ever be, so the only consideration should be tv viewership. If Sunday would improve the ratings, then by all means move it, but I doubt there would be a better time than Wednesday night.

The ARLC would be extremely worried about a 5 week window with no NRL ganes where the opposition would deliberately target to put on their big games...

You didn't say what series of rep games is going to fill the void but I'm assuming it would be multiple weeks of PNG v Samoa v Tonga v Fiji...

Could you imagine that happening for 5 weekends in a row as you want Origin to remain on Wed nights?

I don't see people watching these games in the numbers they watch NRL ganes so what are they going to watch instead?

Let's get real. The SOO played on a Wednesday night, with a "captive" audience and little opposition rates its "t*ts" off.According to reports the estimated value of the SOO series on the Tv contract is $100m plus per annum,50% or more of the Tv deal.

The three Tv stations FTA would all want a slice of it on Wednesday's,they would be less likely if it were a stand alone on weekends.Simply because it would not rate as well, people go out on weekends than they do Wednesdays and the FTA ratings for SOO on a sunday night would not match Wednesday nights.

The AFL and S15 would love to have less sport (NRL)competition on weekends.

By all means have SOO on Sundays ,but players and fans be prepared to accept a lot less on the TV contract.Meaning less funds for players, and grassroots.
You get more stories on Origin on Thursday mornings ,and you would get a lot less on Monday mornings as other sports results would dilute it somewhat.

I haven't got an answer to the scheduling except to say ,if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I love the people who keep saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it". I dare say the players involved may not be saying that come season's end. We've heard players like Cameron Smith and Jonathan Thurston talk a fair bit about player burn out in the last couple of years - when players who love playing Origin like they do start talking like that you should listen.

Whilst it may be extreme, I dare say the changes to the schedule will get its most significant impetus from the players. You guys can carry on about "but they get paid to play" etc. That does not ensure players are at their best because they have had time to get over injuries, niggles and recuperate from the grind of playing and training by having a proper off season.

Yea it is sucking the interest out of a big chunk of the season. Play it over 3 consecutive Wednesdays with 30 man squads, move the nines, scrap rep weekend and and move tests.

Weekend leading up - No NRL/Origin buildup
Wednesday - Origin 1
Weekend - Nine carnival
Wednesday - Origin 2
Weekend - Tonga, PNG etc
Wednesday - Origin 3
Weekend - back to NRL

And the players have also said they won't play Origin games played only 7 days apart.

It's not enough time to back up and play at that intensity (apparently)...

Like Grant is saying ... Change it at your peril...

This player burnout crap has been around for years now. If it was true wouldn't all these rep players be retired by 30?

probably somewhere in between lies the compromise. Leave Origins mid week for the cash co that it is and have tow full bye rounds for NRL with Internationals and a pacific nines instead.

Wednesday - Origin 1
Weekend after NRL Bye- - Pacific test series NZ v PNG (Fri night in PNG), Tonga v Samoa (Sat), Fiji v Cook Islands (Sun)
Two weeks later Wednesday - Origin 2
Weekend after NRL bye Pacific Nines
Two weeks later Wednesday - Origin 3
Weekend - back to NRL

They don't know there born. This was my teams schedule during a successful cup year back in the 80's when most players also worked! Now that is what you call a tough workload!!

If we're going to screw around with Origin then we might aswell go the whole hog and move it post-season.

Shorten the NRL season to <20 rounds, have the finals and GF, play three Origin matches and then have the Test match window.

Sure it'll cause other issues but there's no perfect fix anyway.

NRL TV rights deal: Channel Ten to get games as five-nights-a-week coverage planned via @smh

Quote:
Channel Ten is likely to gain a share of the rugby league television market in the next broadcasting deal, with matches to be played over five nights and networks paying more for less.
The NRL's next TV deal, to begin in 2018, will be the last contract under which viewers will be able to see all games on free-to-air and pay TV, before some games are streamed exclusively on the internet, via mega-rich overseas interests, such as Netflix.
It represents the last opportunity by cable TV and the free-to-air networks, including a commercially secure Ten - should its partnership with Foxtel be approved - to use live sport to ward off the voracious internet challengers.
The AFL is also expected to benefit from the networks' desperation to secure their future, although the southern code is a step ahead of the NRL in guaranteeing its own, with a staff of 150 engaged in plans, concurrent with the rollout of the national broadband network, to produce games on AFL.com.
The intense bidding for rights to both codes, with the AFL's expiring a year earlier, is producing very complicated scenarios, with the most likely being Ten winning a game in both the NRL and AFL.
The NRL's program cover could see a Ten game on Thursday night, a Nine game on Friday night, three Fox Sports games on Saturday, two Nine games on Sunday and a Fox Sports Monday night game.
This would mean the end of Nine's Friday night double-header, which sees one game being shown live in the Sydney market at the same time as another is shown in Queensland.
Because of Queensland's entrenched parochialism, demonstrated by the bias to the northern teams (Broncos, Cowboys, Titans), as well as the Storm, Nine's Friday night game would have a Maroons flavour.
Nine's two Sunday games would be played live on Sunday afternoon and twilight, separated by the only other guarantees of ratings success, the nightly news or reality shows.
This schedule would not interfere with Fox Sports' Super Saturday, nor their Monday Night Football, which are essential to retaining subscribers.
Fox Sports would be surrendering its early Sunday afternoon game, effectively to Ten, and would seek something in return if the Rupert Murdoch-owned network is to pay more for less product.
It may demand a simulcast of all eight NRL games, as it currently does with Channel Seven and the AFL's nine-game coverage.
If Fox Sports was to lose a game in either NRL or AFL, it would pass it only to Ten, in which it now has a 15 per cent share, subject to ACCC approval.
Global Media and Sport's Colin Smith said: "The risks would be too great to surrender additional coverage to either of the other free-to-air incumbents. If Nine had more exclusive NRL or Seven had more exclusive AFL, Foxtel would lose subscribers, which is exactly what they must avoid.
"Foxtel/Fox Sports passing over one game per code to Ten in its weakened position, both in terms of TV ratings and financial performance, would be far less detrimental, especially if it is simulcast."
Nine would object to a simulcast but if Foxtel pays a hefty premium to get the rich rights deal over the line, it may agree.
Fox Sports, which is determined to do the best deal for itself independent of any future tie ups with Ten, will likely insist Ten receives the last pick of the eight games on offer per week.
The NRL will not want its Thursday night opening game beginning with a historically low-rating match, such as the Raiders, Knights or Warriors, but it has studied betting spreads in matches and is convinced it is producing the most even competition ever.
Nor would the AFL want its weekly coverage to begin with the Giants, Suns or Lions, although digital channels allow networks to broadcast games on their main channel to its primary market, while another program is shown on a digital channel.
For this reason, Nine's interest in AFL, or Seven's in NRL can't be discounted.
Nine has indicated it will bid for a Sunday afternoon AFL game, to be shown in the south on its main channel and in northern states on its digital channel, flip-flopping with its NRL game.
However, Fox Sports would strongly resist moves by Nine into AFL territory and Seven into NRL land, just as Nine will never surrender State of Origin to Seven.
"These will be the richest rights ever for both codes, but also the most complicated. If the ACCC do not approve News Corporation's investment in Ten, there may be no Ten," Smith said.
"This would leave only two FTA networks and Foxtel bidding, depressing the price and the investment both codes can make in their games, ultimately to the detriment of the viewer."
