In what context? I bet it isn't used to describe Thurston or in reference to any indigenous person.

Just sayin'.

Does it matter? The vast majority on here know it's not used as a racial slur but somebody could take it offensively like the said AFL player incident. Only difference is on here it's just the social ramblings of a bunch of baboons.

For anyone who is interested it was not at the game but it was a Facebook rant

AFL fan behind racist Facebook rant wants to apologise to Eddie Betts

The AFL fan behind a series of racial slurs aimed at Crows star Eddie Betts said she wants to issue an apology.

Maxine Spratt told 7 News that she had received death threats after labelling Betts as an ape after her beloved Port Adelaide lost to the Crows in Showdown 42 on Saturday night.

Now the 31-year-old wants to apologise and say sorry to Betts in person.

The mother now says she deeply regrets her comments and she "shouldn't have put it (abusive comments) on there".

Crows skipper Taylor Walker said he and Betts had been left shattered by the comments.

Ms Spratt's abusive rants were one of four racist incidents that marred the packed Showdown at Adelaide Oval.

She can f**k off.
Her attempt to try and excuse her own comments were pathetic.
Now she's trying to apologise because she's realised that she is indeed a douchebag racist.
Piss off.

Of course it matters.

Using the word monkey, gibbon, baboon or gorilla as a generic descriptor is very different to specifically calling an indigenous person one of those words.

FFS are we genuinely entertaining the idea that calling black people 'monkeys' is not racist.

Have I just been teleported back to 1940?

Its racist of course it is. Just bringing up a race is racist if we are all the same.

But f**k it, I prefer not to deal with certain humans with backgrounds from certain areas of the globe in business and selling things cause they are just a pain in the A$$ to deal with. And people are stereotyped for a reason.

I don't know. Maybe it's just a coincidence that it's ALWAYS a black guy that gets called an ape...

No I have a half Italian mate we call the Ape - Covered in hair and built like a silverback.
When used in a joking manner it is just that. But most times its used in an offensive way.
Like being called a Mediterranean Descendant, its in the tone

I don't get merkins who push back on this issue. Many wave the flag of free speech or play down the impact of their words.

How hard is this: if your words offend, adapt your language and move on.

If only they could walk a mile in another man's shoes.

...and if you refuse to 'adapt your language' then don't carry on like a f**ken idiot if someone labels you a racist.

We've all done it. Said the wrong thing.

Thing is that if you say something which is in unwittingly distasteful you gotta learn from it. That's what living in an inclusive society is all about.

You wish a fat woman well with her pregnancy once. You repeat it again and you are nothing but low grade immature arrogant scum.

I remember being absolutely horrible to a Mediterranean Descendant in Yr 2. I was 6 years old. I still remember to this day him chasing me around the school yard wanting to bash me.
I've lived with that guilt ever since and would like to meet him again and profusely apologise.
Ever since then, I have despised racists.
Thankfully, in this day and age, our kids grow up surrounded by many children of different ethnic backgrounds.
My kids don't even think twice about what ethnicity a person comes from.

Empathy is a learned behavior. There is a subset of our community from all economic and social backgrounds that simply dont give a f**k. They dont care about the wellbeing of others. They just don't.

When I was a kid (7 or 8 yrs old) I used to live about 10kms from Woolgoolga (which has a large Indian population), and I'd travel 30 minutes on the bus each day. I'd often sit with my friend Boota Something, whose family grew bananas. Most of the Indian families on the bus were also banana farmers, and if you've ever spent time in a banana shed, you'll know that they stink to buggery. I used to have quite calm debates with Boota about whether all Indians stank. I was convinced that they did. He very calmly refuted my claims, arguing that no Indians stank. This was the daily bus conversation for weeks, until one day a teacher was on the bus and heard what I was saying. I got quite a lecture when I got to school.

I am not fussed what people think of me on here in terms of being racist or not. I have friends/acquaintances of all ethnicities/religious backgrounds and i don't find it relevant what they believe or where they're from to have that friendship or acquaintance.

If someone is a dickhead, then they are a dickhead regardless of circumstance, race or religion.......it's pretty simple to me.

Anyways my point here is from your last sentence, you are 100% right. My daughter (about to turn 8) does not even know what racism is. Her school is multicultural and they celebrate that fact all the time. Her closest friends at school are from all different backgrounds and their beliefs or ethnicities don't even come into it.
