I also respectfully disagree about the racist attitudes in the 80s, particularly in relation to Asian immigration

I grew up in Fairfield West and went to a school there in the 80's and 90's and lived in the area until 2009.

Give me the Asian immigration any day over the Middle Eastern. There was a very disticint difference between the two.

My grandparents lived in Cabramatta until about 5 years ago and I never felt unsafe going into Cabramatta as opposed to fearing for my life going into Fairfield after about 1997.

Sure there were racist attitudes about it (Asians) but they assimilated much better than the Middle Easterners.

It's not to say there weren't issues with Asian gangs when I grew up cause there certainly were but I found generally if you didn't give them a reason to be after you then it was ok. Same can't be said for the other guys, they just look for trouble and the level at which they hate us is rather confusing to be honest. Surely they are here because where they are from is much worse? Why hate us so much?

Wettest January since 1988 already and the prospect of another deluge today and tomorrow along the east and south east of the country...

Those articles I read in August and September 2015 predicting the hottest, driest summer due to the extreme El Nino pattern that was forming seem like a long, distant load of made up bulldust now...

I'm not saying one is better than the other as I don't really think you can generalise in such a way.

My point was that both weren't without their problems.

I find that Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world. You could be out 1am - 3am and still feel safe.

My reasoning is due to the triads. They get troubled kids off the road and into the triad system. THey then get into organized crime.

The triads do not get into nonsensical matter against normal citizens. They leave them alone unless you go out of your way to hassle them. You mind your business and they mind theirs.
THeir aim is to climb the 'corporate ladder' and make money.

If they make a hit on someone, it's because they have crossed them. They make the hit on that guy and not bystanders. Usually they find the target and 1 bullet shot in the forehead. It could be a public place, but they wont target bystanders.

In Sydney, you get gangs forming and they have no aim and nothing to do. So they go out and pick on innocent people.

Cyclists....

Sydney cyclists stage mass ride in protest against new fines, ID laws

Scores of cyclists vented their anger this morning at the compulsory identification of adult riders and new fines that are being introduced across New South Wales from March.

More than 100 cyclists rode en masse from Taylor Square in Darlinghurst to Martin Place under a police escort.

From March 2016, riding without an ID will result in a $106 fine. Not wearing a helmet or holding onto a moving car will cost $319, while running a red light will incur a $425 penalty.

The changes were announced by NSW Roads Minister Duncan Gay as part of a crackdown on cyclists who break road rules.

Donald Semken, the organiser of the protest ride, told the rally that "we are here because compulsory ID does not stop us hearing these damn words: 'Sorry I did not see you mate'".

"It is a huge problem … when people get behind the wheels of a car they fail to see us as human beings," Mr Semken said.

"We fail to see how an increase in fines and registration by proxy through a compulsory ID make us any safer.

"We have seen countless studies [showing] that in cyclist and driver incidents, drivers are predominantly at fault.

"So we want the NSW Government to listen up, to roll out Government policy that is based on driver awareness and making us safer.

"What we want is to see more infrastructure and a change in the kind of rhetoric that we're faced on the roads every day."

The New South Wales director of the Centre for Road Safety Transport Bernard Carlton told the ABC last month the move was considered an important safety measure.

"There's been a big change in cycling and we've got a lot more cyclists on the road who are commuting and cycling for recreation and health," he said.

"In New South Wales we have on average around 11 cyclist fatalities every year and 1,500 cyclists are admitted to hospital every year with serious injuries."

Mr Carlton said cyclists would only be stopped and asked to provide identification if suspected of breaking a rule by the police.

"For the first 12 months we will be making it compulsory to carry ID if you are on NSW roads, but the penalty won't apply for the first 12 months," he said.

Well, I didn't get the job. Went to someone else.

The recruiter did mention that they would call me if other positions became available, and Seek has posted two new positions already, but I don't know how to play it.

Should I reapply for these two new positions, should I get in touch with the recruiter and say I am keen, should I wait for the recruiter to get in touch with me, or should I forget it totally (assuming the message that they would call me if something comes up is their polite way of brushing me off)?

I don't know what to do here. What would you guys do?

Knowing how bad recruitment agencies and internal recruitment is across many companies I would say call them. They may tell you to reapply but that conversation should take place.

Reapply.
It is the only thing to do if you are serious about wanting to work there.

Cool. Thanks, guys.

I wasn't sure if I should reapply (their recruitment process is very thorough, but I don't mind going through it again), especially the if they were fobbibg me off. I'm not sure what the "done thing" is.

But I am serious about working there.

Thanks for your advice!
