I applied for a job a while ago and was pipped at the post at stage 4 of the interview process and was given the we will let you know if other positions become available. Not too long after another position exactly the same at the same company came up. I applied and couldn't even get past the initial application

Sounds like that Seinfeld episode where George isn't sure if he has got the job or not so he just shows up and works on the Penski file.

But yeah, i'd apply again, mate.

Cool. Thanks, guys.

I wasn't sure if I should reapply (their recruitment process is very thorough, but I don't mind going through it again), especially the if they were fobbibg me off. I'm not sure what the "done thing" is.

But I am serious about working there.

Thanks for your advice!

If the company is already aware of you I would avoid the recruiter.

If you apply through a recruiter they will be getting a portion of what you might get paid.
Eg the company may have allowed to pay $70p/h for your job, $50p/h goes to you, $20p/h goes to the recruiter. You could negotiate $65 or even $70p/h if you go direct.
Recruiters will also stuff you around with short contracts.

That's a bit like Parra in 2009, followed by Parra in 2010.

Technically, she's the recruitment manager employed by the company.

But I see what you're saying.

Reapply.
It is the only thing to do if you are serious about wanting to work there.

Yep.

Unless the new Ad says "Past applicants need not re-apply", then go again.

When I was looking around for a new job around about this time 2 years ago, I saw this ad for a job on the internet, (wasn't Seek, just some random site I'd never heard of, indeed.com I think it was called). Sounded something like I was looking for so I applied before the closing date for applications...

Then about a month or 6 weeks later, I saw the same job advertised again, with a new closing date, but I'd heard nothing about my first application... So I thought, do I bother applying again? Maybe none of the applicants they got were suitable so they have to re-advertise it? But I applied again anyway... Fast forward about 2-3 weeks more, and I get an email saying my application was unsuccessful... I was still employed elsewhere so I wasn't too fussed.... Another week goes by and I get a phone call from their HR Rep asking if I'm available for an interview! So what I worked out was the email I got was for the first application I lodged and the phone call was for the 2nd application... The place was re-structuring at the time and I'm guessing new people were responsible for recruiting initially or something like that...

So you just never know how it will play out. It's never going to hurt to re-apply. Hell, like Haynzy said, unless you think it would be detrimental, approach the company directly and reinforce on them, honestly, how keen you are to work for them.

Those of you who had Foxtel back in the day would remember Jabba the music host on channel V. I remember him once telling the story of how he got the job at channel V and he said when they asked him why he wanted the job and why they should hire him, he was brutally honest and said, because he was desperate and didn't have any other options so he couldn't afford a) not to get it, and b) to stuff it up if he did get it. And you know how it goes from there...

He must have blown all the money he made in Return of the Jedi pretty quickly.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

I actillay went through their stages very quickly, then had a phone interview with the recruiter (all in the space of a week), and was invited to a function to meet the Regional Managers I'd be working under if successful.

I got a good vibe, and the communication I got back from them said that the role I initially applied for required someone with a lot of experience. So they found someone to fit the bill.

But they said they're happy to discuss other vacancies with me.

In my current job, I applied for one role, but didn't get it - because they needed a certain personality to work at that store -, but I was offered a different role. Hopefully this is the same case.

I'll apply for both jobs and see how I go.

Once again, thank you all for your opinions.

Ahh cool, I thought you meant a seperate recruitment agency.

Good luck mate.

All good, mate! Thanks!

I'm choosing to think that their fast-tracking me through the process (sitting through two tests, a phone interview and a function in the space if a week) means they are something there!

Good luck Eele.

But definitely re-apply for any new positions you see advertised - don't wait for them to contact you. Recruitment managers tend to be busy and deal with so many names on a daily basis, so giving previous candidates a heads up might be low on their to do list... but they might recognise your name in the next list of applicants and remember your strengths - fingers crossed!

I was a little skeptical to apply again in case they were fobbibg me off - then I'd come across as desperate.

But I decided that I want the job, and won't die wondering.

You sure won't get it if you don't apply.

Good luck mate. It was the right decision regardless of the result.

If you keep making the right decisions, the results will come.
