Gross debt should never be used as a measure. A certain amount of gross debt is desirable. Rudd inherited around 50 billion in gross debt, yet still had around 8 billion to allocate to the future fund in Swan's first budget ( which then went into deficit )

There is history to this. Back in the days of Rudd Gillard Rudd @Delboy was waxing lyrical about how his LNP was all about surpluses and Labor spent them.

Delboy Abbott and Hockey were crowing about our grandchildren being burdened by our debt.

What happen Delboy ? its trippled.

It's true though, the old age pension is the biggest drag on the federal budget. Yet it is from this base that the Coalition gets it's largest share of votes.

Yes the then opposition ( Abbott and co ) crowed on about gross debt and compared it to net debt under Howard.

That does not make it a valid measure.

Delboy will tell you it is increasing at a decreasing rate, and point out that a ship this big doesn't get turned around overnight.
