All this proves that there's one rule for big name players and one for all the others.
Tilse got rubbed out for a year and Gower's got a slap on the wrists for a fairly similar offence.
As a repeat offender and someone who obviously should have known better Gower's penalty should have if anything been heavier. For once at least we didn't have to put up with the whole 'it was totally out character' defence because we definitely know that it was part of Gower's.

well tilse now has a new contract and a fresh start.
as far as gower this will loom over his name and career.
the 30k will turn out more, when you think he may lose sponsorship.
not to mention he will also lose the right to captain a team he loves and wont have the chance to captain nsw or aus.

this will also come with the fact that he will lose the respect of alot of people in the league community, to me you cant buy respect you need to earn it... which will be hard for him to earn!

The difference is Tilse was on an official club trip and Gower was on holidays in the off season. If Gower did this while on an official outing I'm sure the consequences would have been much more serious.

Gower was at a celebrity golf event - his celebrity stems from the fact he is the Panthers captain and a representative player.

I dont think they need to take it any further, for once the club (Penrith) have stood up to this type of behaviour and said enough is enough and they need to be congradulated for doing so. I wish they never had to do it in the first place!
This is a just penalty, the guy has a problem he made a mistake and he really needs to learn from it this time!

One mistake? He has had more than this problem involving alco...

Penrith havn't stood up, a 30k fine and loss of captaincy is a slap on the wrist.
A 100K fine and 100k suspended fine, loss of captaincy would be more acceptable...

Everytime he steps out the door his representing his club and the NRL, price of fame.

Gower stripped of captaincy, fined $100,000

PENRITH'S star halfback Craig Gower stormed out of a marathon disciplinary hearing last night after discovering he had lost the Panthers captaincy and been fined a record $100,000, the maximum the club could have imposed.

Gower and his solicitor David Brown had failed to convince the board that Gower's two-day drunken rampage at the Jack Newton Celebrity Golf Challenge at Twin Waters Resort last month was a minor indiscretion. Instead, the board took three hours to decide upon a penalty that is unprecedented in the club's history.

Apart from losing the captaincy, which is tipped to be given to Tony Puletua, Gower has been fined $100,000, with $70,000 of that money suspended on the condition he agrees to be of good behaviour, participate in an intervention program for social responsibility and seek counselling on the responsible use of alcohol. The remaining $30,000 is to be paid into an NRL program for the responsible use of alcohol.

Panthers chairman Barry Walsh said the penalty could have been more severe, adding: "In taking these decisions, the board has considered Craig's exemplary conduct on the field and his genuine commitment to our community over the years.

"Nevertheless, his actions on the Sunshine Coast caused distress to a number of people and damaged our club, our game and the National Rugby League."

Gower refused to comment but Brown indicated he and his client did not agree with the penalties. "The club made a decision, it is not up to us to make a comment … we will not be making a statement."

Gower, 27, had been investigated by Penrith Football Manager Mick Leary after allegations surfaced just before Christmas. Leary's comprehensive report, which involved taking detailed statements from people involved and first-hand witnesses, found Gower had groped the daughter of Balmain legend Wayne Pearce, Tatum Pearce, on the crutch and had menaced Pearce's son, Mitchell with a beer bottle.

Board members had indicated earlier in the week that Gower might retain the captaincy because of his public apology to the Pearce family and the fact the Leary report largely cleared him of other alleged misdemeanours. However, it is understood significant pressure was brought to bear on the Panthers board by the NRL.

Gower turned up for the meeting in a hopeful frame of mind, wearing a black suit and club tie. He spent an hour before the board, presenting his case, after which he had to wait for nearly an hour while the board members considered their decision.

Gower had strong support in the lead-up to the meeting from former Penrith players and current board members Greg Alexander and Col Bentley. But the severity of the sanctions shocked him and he and his solicitor then unsuccessfully argued a second time for a lesser penalty.

Gower had maintained he could not recall the incident in question but the board clearly preferred the evidence given by Tatum Pearce that Gower put his hand "on my vagina" even though Pearce had decided not to make a complaint to police.

Wayne Pearce last night said: "I am pleased with the professionalism and integrity of the club's investigation and the way it was carried out."

NRL chief executive David Gallop said he had discussed the issue with the club but "ultimately it had been their decision because they were his employer".

"It goes without saying that Craig Gower can not find himself in this position again," Gallop said. "This suspended fine maybe only part of what he will face from the club and the league. We will be reviewing the matter when we have received a formal report from the club but, on the face of it, they have been through an exhaustive process and imposed a significant penalty."

Looks like he was imposed the maximum....claytons maximum.

13% is a fair whack though.

Then again....as most point out this IS the media reporting here so the entire thing could be a load of BS.

Interestingly enough we hear nothing about the dockers player charged with assault after an incident at the races. Are league players the only ones to come under scrutiny via the media ?

He fronts court tomorrow.

More than likely it will be adjourned to a later date.

Docker faces assault charges
By Damien Barrett and Grantley Bernard

FREMANTLE'S Heath Black has found more trouble off the field, with police charges arising from incidents at Sunday's Perth Cup.

Fremantle yesterday said Black, 26, was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, obstructing police officers and assaulting a public officer.

The club said Black, who was bailed yesterday and will appear in Perth Magistrate's Court on Friday, had co-operated with police and had notified it immediately of the incidents. In June, some Dockers players were accused of public nudity and drunkenness during a rowdy pub crawl. Black had arranged the get-together of young Victorian and South Australian players on the Fremantle list.

Black finished fourth in the Dockers' 2005 best-and-fairest and was selected for the International Rules Series against Ireland. He played all 22 matches in his return to Fremantle from St Kilda, for a career total of 145.

How often did we hear this on the morning/nightly news ???

it won't be reported and splashed over the Fox Sports site like Gower is though.

they will bury the story to try and fool people into thinking their game isn't played by gay neanderthals

One thing to consider, & I'm not condoning any type of sexual assault, by comparing this idiots actions to gowers. Were not just talking a little assault charge it assault Occassioning Bodily Harm + assault a public official + obstruct, this tells me that he just wasn't having a bit of fun, but this guy is an asshole who cant be told what to do when on the drink, surely he should come under the same public scrutiny that any RL player would for a siilar incident. I will put a few dollars on it that he receives a fine and conviction not recorded. What would happen if a NRL player behaved in this manner. He would be sacked !!!

Was $100k the maximum fine or was it 25% of his salary? If it was 25%, and say an up and comer or fringe first grader on $80k had similar allegations levelled at them. Does this mean they would have received only a $20k fine of which 70% would have been suspended ($14k) and additionally as they would not be captain could obviously not be stripped of this position? Meaning the Penrith club would only really deduct $6k.

Like hell, the club have basically hit him with a pillow, a repeat offender. They were too scared to hit him harder. the NRL should have gotten involved in the investigation, after all he has dragged the whole code through the mud.. He should have been hit much harder and suspended. I doubt the lout will learn anything from this..

Actually he only dishes out $30k because $70k is a suspended fine as per the following, which IMO is a cop out by the club!

"The other $70,000 has been suspended on condition Craig agrees to be of good behaviour and comply with further conditions for the next 12 months," Mr Walsh said

Surely if Wayne's daughter said "he touched my Vagina" this becomes a police matter? Why aren't the police getting involved with this?
