Townsville, Brisbane power outages ruin NRL Grand Final
The Courier-MailOctober 1, 20177:51pm
With their team making the decider following a Cinderella story run through the finals, Ergon Energy said there was an “unplanned” outage in the Townsville suburbs of Castle Hill, Northward, Idalia and Belgian Gardens.
While they are still working to identify the fault in the system, Ergon said about 1200 customers were affected.
Fans took to Facebook, making their feelings known.
“ This is disgraceful! We are missing our home teams grand final. When should we expect power?” one Cowboys fan wrote.
“WOW! One of THE biggest nights of the year for most Townsvillians and a couple of suburbs lose their power at the worst possible time!” another said.
More than 2000 Brisbane homes also lost power as the NRL grand final was getting underway.
Hundreds of Energex customers in Banyo, Burbank, Nudgee and Rochedale are without power as the North Queensland Cowboys and Melbourne Storm do battle.
A rogue animal is believed to have caused the large power outage in Brisbane’s north as 2000 households were left in the dark.
At 7.50pm, an Energex spokesman said a “bundled cable overload” was to blame for the outage in areas around Banyo and Nudgee.
It is understood Energex has since returned power to over 1000 households.
Energex believe the rest of the damaged cable will be replaced by 9.30pm, restoring power to any remaining households.
Meanwhile, a light drizzle in Brisbane has not dampened the spirits of Cowboy supporters tonight as hundreds pour into the Caxton Hotel.
Decked in blue and yellow, footy tragics are shoulder to shoulder, shouting and whistling support for the North Queensland Cowboys as they wait for kick off.
Melbourne Storm supporters are pressed along the sides in a show of silent confidence but are clearly outnumbered.
Cowboy supporter Graeme Findlay said it doesn’t matter how big the margin is.
“As long as the Cowboys are in front at the end, it doesn’t matter what the score is,” he said.
