NRL and AFL go head to head in Sydney's west on Saturday night

With all the Anti-AFL rants in here, has anyone even considered that the GWS team could be good for the NRL?

For example, ANZ Stadium could do a package deal giving entry to 1 AFL and 1 NRL game over the weekend.

GWS v Collingwood on Saturday night
Parramatta v Melbourne Storm on Sunday arvo

This could be marketed as a huge event which would be positive for both codes and tourism in Western Sydney in general.

I guarantee that if promoted well, at least 10,000 fans would make the trip up from Melbourne for this sort of sporting event weekend. Maybe they could throw in entry to the Rosehill races on the Saturday arvo as well...

Rather than trying to demonise AFL at every opportunity, why can't people realise some of the opportunities the new team could provide to actually promote rugby league?

Would this deal be cheaper than your standard NRL ticket? Because you would have to pay me to watch a fumbleball game.

I realise most on here don't like AFL, however one thing you can't deny is it has a huge supporter base. Clubs like Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon, Hawthorn and Adelaide all have 40,000+ memberships, and the most die hard fans will attend every game they can.

Sydney is a short/cheap flight from Melbourne and Adelaide so many AFL fans supporting these clubs will be travelling to Sydney to see their team play against the new GWS team from 2012 when it enters the AFL.

What I'm saying is this will provide the Western Sydney based NRL clubs such as Canterbury, Parramatta, Penrith and the Wests Tigers the opportunity to attract some of these fans to their games.

Instead of drawing 10k on a Sunday arvo, they could promote some games at ANZ as blockbuster sporting weekends and attract 30k... Especially if the Storm was the away side, a large proportion of the fans travelling to see the AFL game on say a Saturday night would also stay in town for the NRL game on the Sunday arvo.

What's the problem with this, the NRL gets to promote its game to a wider audience, the Western Sydney area gets a blockbuster sports weekend to promote. Would also be a good idea to boost the crowds at the racing if Rosehill Races was included on the ticket...

LOL. And when Parra plays anyone but the Storm?

We have our own fantastic ground thanks. We do not need to do a deal with the enemy.

Imagine suggesting such a deal for Etihad. The AR people would be up in arms and bag off League at every opportunity.

Face it, the GWS is a failure waiting to happen - they don't even play anywhere near the place they are marketing to! Both Parra and Penrith Stadiums are FAR closer to Blacktown than ANZ!

Besides, Western Sydney doesn't need tourism - it's not the North Coast. Anyway, Parra would get a far bigger crowd playing a Sydney side, Newy or Brisbane than Melbourne. It's bad enough that head in the sand Sheedy wants to muscle in on the Dogs and Bunnies home turf than having some stupid idea of getting Parra to help them.

If you Victorians REALLY want co-operation with our code:

  • Learn who Nathan Hindmarsh is.
  • Give the same coverage of League in Melbourne papers as AR gets in Sydney and Brisbane.
  • Gag Pat Smith and any other media genius that will slander League at every other opportunity.
  • Learn the meaning of the term "Rugby".
  • Admit that League players are fitter (reference - recent Australia's greatest sportsman comp won by Slater, and the AFL v NRL boxing match a few year ago when AFL players lost every bout, including a first round knock out by Meninga on Jacko).
  • Tune in and cheer on the Kangaroos when they play internationals.
  • Congratulate us on getting more viewers for our GF that you did for yours.
  • Stop Channel 10 from opening every night with a story from the AFL about some knobs 50th grade game ahead of a major League story like Origin selection, a major signing or major retirement.
  • Drop the anti RL agenda from The Outsiders.
  • Give equal coverage to your mischief makers as ours get.
  • Get the GWS f*ckwits to stop treating Western Sydney as a sporting void, and acknowledge the fantastic work done by League, Soccer and Netball in leading the way with sport in the area, and finally
  • Admit that the likes of Ian Thorpe, Harry Kewell and Ray Price became sporting superstars from Western Sydney long before your arrogant sport from the dumb side of the Murray knew it existed!

And like we get 10k on Sunday arvo lol. And like the way to fix it would be to get more people from Adelaide!.

Toss off over your 40k memberships all you like - it means zip in our land as much as Man U's crowds or the Green Bay Packer's crowds. Your point is as absurd as filling your Origin games by offering a package deal with ticket to Flemington for Brisbane fans.

Your suggestion smacks of the arrogance that got Sheedy flamed last week. My advice is to stop masturbating that lots of people in the World's 3 most remote cities attend your sport - and wonder why no other country knows it exists!!!!!!!!

Does the AFL do this for the Storm in Victoria?

No they don't, so get bent, the AFL aka Fumbleball has never done anything for RL, why should we help them out?

FFS, they are making RL take down Play RL signs around Blacktown, they wouldn't allow the RLWC banners to be put up across the road from AFL house in Victorian land, so stuff em.

And what team in Sydney averages 10k at ANZ esp on a Sunday afternoon? :?

Swans, and soon the GWS Nigels.

Can't wait to see the GWS Boggerballers/Victorians (take your pick) after about 6 home games, they'll shove it down our throat non stop, and the more they do that, the more everyone will resent it.

And you're right, this'll bring down the Swans too, look what happened when Basketball put in a second team thinking they could take over.

Promoting rugby league in Sydney? Sounds like you want AFL promoted. What a stupid idea.

Hey I got an idea. Let's create a new Rugby League team - GWM - Greater Western Melbourne Giants. Let's invade their territory and hit them where it hurts. Now that's good thinking :)

Great dummy spits Loudie... loved it.

One more thing you could throw in... STOP W&NKING OVER "40k" Memberships, when the majority of those are 1 or 3 match memberships, Dog/cat memberships, Baby memberships, "I visited melbourne and all I got was this lousy shirt" memberships, interstate memberships et cetera.

If you took all the crap out of their membership numbers, they are only about twice ours, which we will hit within 10 years if we keep the membership drive up...

AFL is all smoke and mirrors. Yes they get great crowds, and it seems like its huge and people by it, but in reality, they can't even outrate the Princess Diaries in half the country...

Neither can League..

Obviously it isn't aired in most of the states, but if it were, it would not rate well. Not yet anyhow.

But we don't pretend to be bigger than we are. If anything RL suffers from negativity about our potential and our strengths. The Victorians seem to think they are a national sport with unmatched popularity across the country but the ratings show that is nonsense. If we claimed we were huge in Adelaide and Perth they could have a go at us but we don't.
