It's all about money. The game needs a draft. why.
So clubs like the Cowboys, Canberra and Knights all get a fair crack at a premiership.
At the moment it is the clubs who can buy a premiership.
You need only have to look at last years winners to see that the teams who dont have big cash dont have much chance of ever winning a tital.
It is why the NRL looks like a small Sydney comp, because it is really. Even the Broncos struggle in this code.

Terrible idea. Look at the teams that have gone well in NYC within a few years they are good in 1st grade. Newcastle struggling now but won u16's comp are 1st in NYC. They should get 1st choice at all of this kids to get a successful team.

How many Milford's will this create? Homesickness. What if say DCE is injured so Manly come last & a half is picked 1st. He's stuck behind DCE for the contract length just dumb

The 5 exempt how does it work? What if you play kids up a grade do they have to go on the draft with their team mates? Or is it in age groups can't see it working even with this.

If we have a draft with 5 exemptions for each team wtf is the point of it? You will have the 80 best kids each year not involved. Screw any kind of draft imo, but this would be the most pointless of all the ideas.

I am not against a draft. This thread really highlights how people fear change. I would like to see recruitment in general overhauled as well. How can people complain about a lack of tribalism when players move around the place like open slather. Most unprofessional run competition until the ARLC got in but this needs addressing.

What's wrong with Junior Development as it stands now? It seems ARLC want to change everything to be different then the old management

Union are about to bring in a national second grade. Remind me again which code got the $billion TV deal?

The National Union Comp is designed to compete directly with the NRL for supporters...

It wont be anywhere near as big or successful, but the focus of their new structure is gaining supporters.

The RL already has this in the NRL, lower grades wont be there to compete with the NRL. The reserve grade is more focused on players than fans; if nobody goes to watch a NSW Cup game, but the games develop players into NRL standard athletes then NSW Cup is considered successful in what it was designed for.

Reserve Grade doesnt even need to be state wide, really. If there were enough players, they could have separate comps in every city and it would still achieve its purpose.

A National Reserve grade is unnecessary and expensive....

It's easy to wake up in your own bed and drive to the game and go to your own changerooms etc. A Canberra fringe players needs to know how hot it is playing in NQ or the 3 hours plane trip and how to switch off.
Goes the other way Seg left NQ as he hated the travel and wanted to go home to his bed as much as possible. NYC & his rookie year gave him that taste of the travel. They should prepare like the Top side so they are better equiped when they get the callup.

If you look at the way the new structure will effect the game, it is all positive.
The draft will alow clubs to bring in the best youngsters and spread them evenly. ? win/win
It will stop rich clubs from cherry-picking the best young players, by offering them a penhouse at Bondi or Manly.
The second tier comp will become stronger with the young players brought in plying their trade at their new club's feeder teams,(which are now in both, the NSW and QLD cups) again win/win.

The second tier comp becomes more of a competition, plus adds more bang for your buck on Grand Final day with a QLD cup winner verse NSW cup winner.

It saves money by stopping the poaching. Every club is then equal and can win a comp. Without biase.

What more do you need, how more convincing do you need, or are you scared of change.

Time for change, we are so far behind other codes we get sand kicked in our face at every crossing.
You want to stop that, or you happy to have the tight short singlet wearers own your sorry asses.

Talk about tribalism but advocate for a draft?

You don't think Knights shouldn't be able to keep everyone one of the NYC team that's 1st and u16's that won the comp?

Canberra had the best juniors in 08 and for various reasons they didn't work out.

Thurston just signed a 4 year deal why should a halfback be forced to wait behind him because some offical wanted him.

The fact is we have a great system now no reason to change it

My fear is that if clubs were no longer responsible for development, who is going to go scout talent and compete for them with other codes. Could really be shooting ourselves in the foot somewhat.

All about the money that's why even the Broncos are struggling?

Please stop talking.

Get ready to welcome tanking into the NRL. If the draft existed this year, Stuart can ride on the assumption that the team is playing like shit on purpose to get priority picks.

I feel really bad for any young kid that is forced to start their career in Canberra. Not the sort of lottery you want to win.

You're an idiot and a prime example if what is wrong with today's game.

Is this really one of your main arguments against a draft?

Homesickness is a huge factor in the draft. It's not uncommon for kids to be drafted in the AFL and tell their clubs that they want to go back home. It's been a big problem especially amongst indigenous players. And we're going to be dealing with another country in NZ!

How is the current system better at supporting tribalism than a draft?

Because players still have the freedom to decide where they want to play and for a lot of players that's staying in their home city and playing with the intention to play for one club.

How will clubs know who to pick for their junior rep sides if they don't scout for talent?
Similarly how will clubs know who to sign for their top 25 if they don't scout?

Exactly. I have used the example before but a young halfback might not want to go to Melbourne, NQ or Manly and sit in Reserve grade. Yet because some CEO said they want him. He's stuck for whatever length the contract is for
