NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

Thursday and Monday are ratings gold at least. Friday 6pm will be a void. Most people will catch the last 40 minutes at best and they will draw low numbers at the gate. It might be boring but this is the forecast and the game deserves a better time slot.

Whoever agreed to 6pm Friday needs to take a walk.

The game constantly makes stupid decisions or finds unnecessary road blocks but it's amazing that it can get a $2b tv deal and be as popular as it is.

Imagine if we had actual visionaries and proper goals in place where we had teams in places like Perth, NZ2 and Brisbane2 instead of giving other codes a leg up

If the NRL gets rid of Monday and Thursday night games, and gets rid of Friday 6 PM games, then I reckon the grant should only cover what the salary cap is at the time. Any other club expenses should be covered by money made from sponsorships, memberships, ticket sales, merchandise sales, leagues club grants, investments (property, etc).

If clubs are given the opportunity to make as much money as possible, and get a reasonable grant, and they still need financial help all the time, then they won't be able to blame anyone but themselves!

This is what I think, and it may come as a surprise to many given yesterday's von is in the ARLC comments, but I think it's time Grant left.

I think it's time for someone else to have a go at chairman, but I say this hesitantly, because things are only gaining momentum the past 2 years, it's been a massive hurdle.

Not down to the guy but a fresh perspective.

But whether that happens or not the next bit is imperative... And I say it all the time but the the clubs need a special clubs committee or person within the nrl that is a non executive but is taken seriously. Not a chairperson just now, want to maintain independence, but they need better communication and issues being resolved.

The negs for a club chair on the board would be people like gould, ect. Just no. It's not going to work, but a committee/body with dedicated funds so they can find stuff out, that will.

Any of them who don't support the games being played at fan-friendly times need to go!

I definitely want to see an end to Friday 6pm long term. Apparently it's mitigated by nz games, ect, but I just don't see how even Fox will be happy long term. It's not very cool to 'try' it on for size like they seemed to indicate they were doing. I take a wait and see but I don't like the prognosis.

But for clarity purposes I generally have faith in the commission. They've had to do things against the grain, I think the next 5 may be easier with momentum, which may even be helped by a new chairman which could be for the best.

GBerg, Fraser and Crawford seem switched on. Grant too but life and assholes out there, against RL, take their toll...

I hope for Samuels as chair. The clubs will love that but, Mr sort out AFL, but I think they're all going alright. They could bring in Gyngell which would balance club and admin, but I'm sure they'll find someone if he is ineligible. I think it noteworthy those 3 moves are needed to replace Grant who has RL in his blood. Those guys are all quality tho. Or Cyngell as chairman, Samuels may be happy. There you go a report says Sutcliffe as well.

To be clear despite my last post I would vote for Grant. There has been shown no viable alternatives. The clubs just seem to want a scalp.

One personal the other worldly. Who would not want to see data, juniors and clubs go forward, instead just the clubs. Data includes fans and revenue and engagement, juniors, gear ect, how many boots would 1m buy?

I still think a specific investment/save me fund from a yearly growing pool is better than 3m flat each year.

The clubs could use their own MOU to admit some will use the fund more than others for the betterment of the league. Big begets bigger. And I think all sports are over extended atm, so they should be more philosophical. The ARLC need to match other sports inflated budgets. I'm sick of seeing Auskick balls and afl jerseys and little kick arounds at Parks and kids functions plus jerseys knowing there is no avenue for nrl fans.

>>>In fact as per an earlier post of mine, they need a funds distribution board. Oh look back at KPIs again? There should be a bit of red tape around million dollar free lunches if we consider game access and popularity on the same level as clubs...

So it will be KPIs with context and a kind of forward planning of club interests baked into strategy. If the clubs want to spend money, let them spend as much as they want, but get them to justify every cent.

Nah, since you brought up the issue of farts I will leave it in your capable hooves.

I mentioned breaking wind in passing and the next minute you are googling fart frequency...

What if I was to say for instance... you are a felcher?

I got a feeling you are the type that will enjoy that search....

The NRL would still make a lot of money, maybe not quite as much, but the clubs would be richer, so they could survive with a bit smaller grant, and we would have larger attendances. How can a club/business not be self interested??? Whether a club is poor or rich, I'd like to see them have the opportunity to make as much money as possible, and then if they still need financial help consistently (outside of a reasonable grant) then they have to fold/compete in a lower tier, or relocate.

This is what the entire issue is. The Nrl are saying that they won't make money. The clubs are saying but you promised us. Look, I'd like to see all clubs profitable but not at the expense of grassroots and that is exactly what is happening right now.

Maybe the Nrl should give in and give the clubs the $13 mil and take the rest off the grassroots amount? Would you prefer that?

You would be laughed out of the building!

What time slot are you proposing?
