NRL faces major turmoil as clubs threaten breakaway league

Another one of the 14 bosses bullying the NRL around is Max Donnelly.
He is another club bean counter who has admitted he knows or cares very little about the rugby league side of things at Parra let alone the wider growth of rugby league. He has said the Eels Leagues Club needs to cut what it pays to the Rugby League club....I am at a loss as to how he gets a say in who runs the game.

Bullying the NRL?

What are they.. 14 yr old school kids or supposed professional businessmen running a soon to be a half a billion revenue a year organisation?

I find it interesting that the clubs have had Bart Campbell from Melbourne Storm represent them.

Since he has been in control of Melbourne they have made the decision to relocated their junior development system to Central Queensland abandoning Melbourne where they are meant to be growing the game. Bart has very little Rugby League background but has a big time business background.

To me it is indicative of the fact these clubs are purely about themselves and not about what is in the best interests of the future of Rugby League.

I found it interesting too that the Nrl clubs gave him a highly valued position on the club committee even though he had only been with the Storm club for such a short time. Clubs obviously value and respect his knowledge.

You all might want to know Melbournes history before commenting. Yes I'm a storm supporter but I'll give you some facts that are clearly lacking at the moment

Basically the moment storm entered the comp they had a feeder team in brisbane called Norths. I know this because I played in it. Mark Murray was the head coach of the qcup team. Storm were there for years till around 07/08 when they also started a team down in Sydney. That didn't last long because clubs complained. Around the same time they left Norths and took over Easts. Now they have got funding from different areas and made a massive sports center up the coast and are now with the falcons. So they were always with Qld teams and up and coming players. Bart didn't start anything he just took over what was already there.

Storm were put in Melbourne with zero help from the Nrl in grassroots. The only benefit they got was the extra Grant. Now they have always made a effort at grassroots to help fund initiatives in a Afl mad town, more than a lot of other clubs. And for me they have done a pretty bloody good job with all things considering. They never had a Nswrl or qrl helping them promote the game, they have been on there own. Billy slater has even started up his own RL development company to promote league.

Now I agree mostly with your last statement and is part of the reason I believe the Nrl are taking over the grassroots. I do think some clubs do a lot more for the game than others like Penrith. The money Nrl spends on grassroots should lessen the amount clubs like Penrith fork out.

Wasn't everyone complaining about former players running clubs, and that they don't know how to handle all that money and running clubs as a business. All this complaining about clubs wastage and not being able handle that responsibility. Parramatta was one club criticised for so many unqualified former players involved
Yet when a club appoints someone with a Business background to run their club like a business, we complain that he isn't running it with rugby league in mind. They aren't rugby league people, they only care about the bottom line.
Seems some people want their cake and to eat it as well

Love how this info gets leaked to the media straight away, Nothing like washing your dirty laundry in public. No wonder there is no trust between NRL and clubs. It's a very poor way of doing business, presuming of course it's true!

Presuming it is true which I feel it isn't this needs to stop. Leaking to the media is ridiculous. Surely the Nrl can make the clubs sign confidentiality clauses and fine administrators for breaking them. Just something. This is the pettiness that the clubs resort to while Grant and the Nrl cop all the backlash. How about what is said in the boardroom status in the boardroom.

Kinda weird that Bennetts own club is one of those calling for Grant's resignation, along with the other queensland clubs, the warriors and the whole thing is being led by the boss of the storm (the club Queenslanders try claim as an honourary QLD club).
But yea, it's a NSW conspiracy

Do you 100% honestly believe that? Do you think the broncos lead the charge? I don't. I am thinking about dib, politis, gould, ect. My guess is that Locky was thinking that too.

I mean gould was only too happy to go onto radio, tv, papers, ect, ect, and he even doubled down on a comment after people misconstrued it.

Mate, I am beginning to wonder if we are talking about the same sport here

lol... you can't be serious? You lot change the moment it suits your little ideas. They are some of the most unprofessional clubs in the country, corruption, secret payments, bad player managers, each year breaking the salary cap on purpose and "by accident", lose track of records and double books, brown paper bags, dodgy TPA agreements, going bust, have massive board fights, had huge problems with player discipline, scandals, drugs, match fixing.

AAAAAANNND the big one!>> ROLL OUT "MY CLUBS ARE ANGLES" ADAM KURNTGEL...

Misspelt the name there, but you get it, right... roll him out and give him a club-sandwich. Here's the big one:

FIGHTING WITH THE ADMIN because they have been so crap and lousy in the past 100 years, even though the ARLC has done more for them and the game in the past 5 years than some of those individuals have done in the entire time they've been there.

Those are your clubs. I HOPE you are PROUD of THEM!!

Its not a real article - its trying to lead you to a conclusion

Got to examine it.

I think its the classic 'pre-fail' or your situation is hopeless 'capitulate already' article.

It could be true, sure, but I have my doubts after their atrocious treatment of the 'truth' in the past few years. Heck, the past 2 decades.

I dont like the use and position of the word "promise" in the article. Why would they make another promise after what went down previously and they stated they were working toward something.

The article to me sounds very contrived or its taking a lot of liberties. Its almost as if it belongs in the far worse rag, the telegraph - its like that kind of article rarely appears in the australian where it literally seems to be sinking a knife in.

Its meant to be their 'upstanding' paper. I can't fully doubt it, or say yes to it, but I still have significant doubts. But we are not laymen here really. Its highly possible it was designed to fool people, or be a portent to the future, ect. If my memory serves me correctly, they met with some club group as late as wednesday, and they did the AFL presentation of the football cap.

NO other story mentioned any hassle. It could be the inside goss. But its just another stupidity thing in relation to all this, another brick. They signed MOU 12 months ago, and sh!t has gone down since then. So what, do a new one.

Also, the article mentions 'fears', and guys taking 'stances', and introduces the 2 other people gould called out the other day. Then 'embarrassing reversal'.

The paper is clearly stating through proxy that it wants grant to 'fall on his sword'

They are trying to instruct him.

Its a piss-poor paper. They have determined it will be the last one to shut down if they can help it. It loses like 10-20m a year. Its a wonder people even read it.

But the outcome could be similar. Just the article may have a few signposts, but not 100% basis. Article feels heavily edited by the head propaganda editor.

By the same token I don't think the clubs are that silly as to give up their power to the media, and just freely leak all this stuff. Unless the most negative of all inferences was taken by the reporter when he asked how it went. To leak this stuff as others mentioned is pretty geniused.

Writing for The Australian...

You were leading the charge against these same papers a year ago when the tv deal was being negotiated.
Are you willing to take the articles at face value now, why?
leading what charge?

you said he was based in Sydney and implied he was a NSWelshman when neither is true

so what's your conspiracy theory now?

guy's got me blocked. You can see how dense he is though. And he refuses to answer the question. He's one seriously weak individual, or feels so entitled to not have to defend his position, its a strange mix of bigotry and hubris that somehow manifests in absolute seething rage most of the time.

I dont miss his toxic attention in the least

Interesting interpretation of this.
Just in case there were any Sydneysiders still on the fence about whether or not they should find a pitchfork and join the mob...

The NSW-based media really hyping this up so anything other than Grant's head will be seen as unacceptable.

Why are you now taking these articles from the DT/Oz and SMH at face value? What changed?

I would appreciate a straight answer instead of more avoidance.

Seems like quite a turnaround in your behaviour.
a straight answer to what?

i have no idea what you're on about

perhaps link me to a post you claim i've made

and you are the one avoiding questions about your sudden change in conspiracy theories

I can't see anywhere were El Diablo claims he agrees with what's written in the article.

What he did take point with is Lockyer4's claim that the article was written by someone in the nsw media as part of some old nsw establishmet conspiracy, when in fact the article was written by a queenslander.
