ALL 16 NRL clubs have this afternoon issued an extraordinary vote of no-confidence in independent commission chairman John Grant and called on him to resign.

A letter addressed to the NRL, signed by all the chairmen and chairwomen, is to be emailed to chief executive Todd Greenberg and the commission, calling for an emergency meeting to vote on Grant’s future. He needs four votes to survive.

The clubs agreed on the unanimous vote of no confidence following the breakdown in talks yesterday when four chairmen stormed out of a meeting at NRL headquarters on future funding.

Even the clubs owned by the NRL — Newcastle and the Gold Coast Titans — have signed the letter.

So too have the Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra who have relied on NRL funding to survive in recent years.

Grant was in a commission meeting yesterday and unaware of the move by the clubs.

I know some people think the clubs are greedy and selfish for demanding a cut of money from the nrl, but at the end of the day the 16 clubs and the players (who the clubs pay) are the ones that make so much money for the nrl to spend

The clubs, the ARL and the NRL reached an in-principle agreement on the funding deal last December. Greenberg said on Thursday that neither he nor Grant had reneged on the agreement, but had told the clubs they would finalise the new collective bargaining agreement first before negotiating the new funding deal, which will distribute the record cash haul of the NRL's new $1.8 billion broadcast deal. He also foreshadowed changing priorities for the sport as the NRL battles falling participation numbers.

"I think what's happened is there's been some differing principles from last year to now and there are things you learn along the way. We were upfront with the clubs yesterday and we'll continue to be upfront with them," Greenberg said.

"The clubs are such an important part of the game, but also there are other parts of the game, including the grassroots. We've got some concerning trends on participation in the sport. We've got to make sure that in the next cycle we have a distribution model that allows us to invest in all parts to grow the sport."

Put its like in politics when the minority party passes a motion of no-confidence.

It doesn't actually mean much unless its supported by the required majority

Don't lose any sleep over this sort of thing, Major League Baseball and the NFL go through this every time they renegotiate. Currently the MLB owners and Players Assoc have until Dec 1 to agree or withdrawal of labour starts

Having said that, Grant appears to be a dope with little vision or charisma. He should go and appoint someone who has some idea

Simple majority of all 26 members (50% + 1) ie. 14 clubs

Or

Super majority 10 clubs + QRL + NSWRL

Either way Grant is f**ked.

this was more my point - so they go no f you and vote no confidence - grant resigns or is fired or whatever, another lackey comes in - what happens if they don't agree to the clubs demands? do they just vote no confidence everyone until they get their own way? it is a mind-bogglingly stupid game of chess with no winners.
