Just make your own jerseys you scrubs.
Took me 3 days to stitch my Eels '1' jersey, only difference it the sponsor tags are a bit wonky.
That's what you call a f**king bargain.

Comparing NRL merchandised products to rival sports shows there is no excuse for the current prices. If it does cost more to make our gear than we're in partnership with the wrong people. If it doesn't cost more than the prices should be lowered.

I'm not saying the NRL should give things away. But lowered prices makes them more affordable to more people. More people can buy a jersey, people who already get a jersey for their kid might be able to afford one for themselves or their husband/wife as well. Lower prices = increased sales.

What about the 20m more a year we get? Probably not an excuse but surely a good enough reason.

How can there be close to a $100 difference between a NRL Replica kit and a Super League Kit made by the same manufacturer?

I know there is NRL Licensing fees but this does not explain the huge difference between the R.R.Ps.

The average price of an NRL jersey is between 150 and 160, the average price of an SL jersey is 80.

Close to $100?

Nice rounding up. $70 is not $100. And even then how can you do an absolute direct comparison, and do you understand anything about pricing and distribution. I don't work for any jersey manufacturer or reseller, but they need to make a profit.

That said there are ways to get your jersey cheap - wait for end-of-season sales; ensure you're a member of your club (all clubs offer merch discounts in certain membership categories); look for combo deals etc.

Fair trading?

Don’t chains like Amart get them for something like $40 and then just sell them for $100+? Surely someone here has worked in a sports store.

Pre-Order Bulldogs Replica 2011 Shirt from UK - $81AUD + Delivery (Not sure without signing up but doubt it would be $70)

It took me about 2 minutes to find this, heard the theory before and this confirms it, so there's a good alternative if you think $150+ is a bit steep.

Edit: I'm sure when I was on thier earlier this year looking at other Jerseys Manly, Warriors and Rabbitoh's jerseys were listed at similar prices aswell.

Worked in Sports Retail while I was at uni as the buyer for all things football (boots, clothing, safety equip, merch etc) going back about 6 years ago now. Even then the wholesale prices on official jerseys were creeping up to $100 from certain manufacturers (nike were the most expensive then). I'm sure they are even more expensive now!

There is now way the A-mart would be getting them for $40, certain manufacturers place the product on sale to retailers at the end of the season if they have excess stock rolling into a jersey change. Never saw anything come through that cheap.

Wholesale pricing to retailers for jerseys in Australia is around $100-110. The NRL earns a licensing fee from this amount and a percentage of this is then paid back to the clubs. If you buy from your club then they are earning the profit, and their portion of the licensing fee. If you buy from Rebel, they're only getting their portion of the licensing fee.

The fundamentals of supply and demand tell us that the market sets the pricing of the jerseys, in that retailers sell at a price where by they sell enough volume to consumers for them to be satisfied with volume and profit margin. If they make them too expensive, they won't sell volume. If they don't put enough margin on top, they don't make enough profit.

Comparisons to pricing in a different market (eg UK) is largely irrelevent because there are different influences on the market over there. For example, it is probably understood that RL is a "minor" sport in the UK so to encourage consumers to purchase merchandise the price point has to be set lower, by manufacturers and ultimately by retailers.

This presents a good opportunity for Australian consumers to purchase online from the UK at cheaper prices. If you do so, however, please remember that your club won't get as much revenue from this sale.

Most importantly, it has to be remembered that revenue is hard to come by for NRL clubs. As we know, most clubs struggle to break even each year. Merchandise is an important revenue stream, and the clubs need as much as they can get from it.

If you take anything away from this, if you make the decision to buy gear locally, please buy it from your club shop as opposed to Rebel etc as the club gets more out of it.

What do clubs/NRL gain by selling merch to Rebel rather than selling it all themselves? Is the greater exposure worth the profit sacrafice?

Rebel buys it from the suppliers, not the NRL/clubs.

What does it gain? More sales as the likes of Rebel still sell plenty of gear; brand exposure, broad distribution, etc.

I guess they realise that not everyone who is interested in the NRL knows or thinks about buying from their club, or they may not want to order online or over the phone, etc. A lot of people like to walk into the shop and try it on.

I agree with Bunnies Man

i've argued before that the game needs to sell more items for less rather than less items for more. I lvie in the Campobelltown area and whilst i don't support the tigers i'd love to see the area flooded with tigers jerseys. but with the prices it isnt happening.

you can argue that the prices are ste for the amrket and yes the die hards will buy it no matter what the price but having an exorbitant high price cuts out a lot of consumers and given leagues background is a "working class game" i dont see why the fans are getting gouged for things due to the incompetance of the NRL to negotiate a better tv deal

The market sets the price. Just because you think its a ripoff doesn't mean everyone else does - at least to the point where outright demand drops.

Business is more complicated than just saying "make it cheaper and they will sell more".

I bet Ferrari would sell more cars if they sold them for $100,000. That doesn't mean it makes business sense. There are other things at play.

The NRL has developed the "supporter" range (sold through Best N Less) to provide gear for those who don't want to spend as much money or who can't. The "premium" products are for those who can.

I refuse to spend this type of money at stores like Rebel, Peter Wynne's etc etc.

However have no problem doing it at the club store knowing my money is going directly to the club.

I wouldn't baulk at paying the prices, if the actual gear that was sold was of the same standard that the players wear. But some of the replicas are dodgy quality and worthy of the price tag that befits the Best and Less range.

I want to lodge a complaint with the NRL in to why jersey prices are so high in this country.
I think you'll find posting a rant on this forum isn't exactly lodging a complaint with the NRL.

If you want to lodge a complaint with the NRL then lodge a complaint with the NRL.
