NRL Jersey prices are a rip off

I have looked up all the Super League teams and the average price for a replica 2011 jersey ranges from 40 pounds ($75 Australian Dollars). Through to 45 pounds ($80 Australian Dollars). Brands include Kooga, Canterbury and ISC. I have also compared Rugby jersey prices in 6 other European countries and none of which price there jerseys over equivalent of $100 Australian dollars.

Replica jerseys cost about $80-$90 here. Official jerseys cost $150-$170.

Also League in Australia is the a dominant sport. Despite what they say, in the UK Union and League are so far behind soccer. In other European countries Rugby is even further back.

Some of your arguments make no sense. So because it is a dominant sport the NRL can charge $80 bucks to $100 more to the same type of jersey in the UK.

In England Soccer is the dominant sport, it doesn’t charge equivalent of $169 AUD for a jersey. They are 40 pounds...

I wouldn't baulk at paying the prices, if the actual gear that was sold was of the same standard that the players wear. But some of the replicas are dodgy quality and worthy of the price tag that befits the Best and Less range.

This is what I hate. You can buy what players actually wear on court, field, ice etc in the US for a price so why pay a similar price here for a dodgy replica?

I saw christmas chocolates (advent calenders) at Coles the other day. The Cartoon ones like Toy Story etc were $3, the Broncos and Coyboys ones, same brand, same size were $8. It's got to be the NRL licensing fees. Ridiculous.
Were the Penrith ones shaped like soldiers ?

Its all part of paying the players inflated salaries.
Look at the ticket prices for games, going up all the time

Inflated salaries? Please. You can't compare them to a bricklayer or something. Look at other sports and other codes, even in this country. Rugby league players are seriously underpaid.

THe jerseys are overpriced and need to come down to a reasonable price.

In a previous post it was suggested the price of the jersey cost was $100. Geez the NRL must charge some hefty merchandising fees.

Using the current exchange rate in comparing UK prices for Premier League jerseys vs Rugby Jerseys sold here only tells part of the story.

Some years ago the exchange rate was 3 to 1 so a 40 pound jersey was equal to $120 Australian. However today the exchange rate means that same football jersey in the UK is now worth $70. Has the jersey dropped by almost 50% to the UK buyer? No the price is the same.

A fair assumption is to take an average on exchange rates when comparing cost of living and then assuming that the average Premier League jersey is valued at around $100 or the equivalent cost to an English person in buying that jersey in their country.

Now English jerseys are not made in London or Manchester, they're made in Indonisia or Thailand or China by the gazillion load for tuppence ha'p'nny. Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea & Arsenal sell as many jerseys in Asia as they do in the UK.

A quick squizz at the Roosters jerseys in my closet shows the authentic 1998 away jersey was made in Australia and my replica traditional jersey was made in China. The first cost over $100 12 years ago and the second cost me $95 this year. I can't say where authentic jerseys are currently made, but even if it is in China the numbers made compared to English clubs would be much smaller.

With smaller sales volumes you have to make a larger margin on each sale for the club to make a viable profit, but you also have to take into account smaller sales mean a higher percentage per unit goes towards shop rents, staffing costs etc.

As others have said if you really cant pay $160 then buy a traditional jersey that doesnt require updating every season or buy last seasons at reduced prices.

Even if you buy a new home jersey every 3rd or 4th year, an $80 difference in cost amortised over 4 years = $20 a year or $5 per quarter or $1.25 per month or 27 cents a week.

Jerseys cost as much as people are willing to pay for them. No more, no less.

This is proven by the NRL dominating merchandise sales in this country. If they were overpriced, that wouldn't be the case

I love how you pretend to know the inner workings, market forces etc that exist.

You're like a broken record. If you were fair dinkum about complaining, you'd have emailed the NRL. Seems to me you're after attention and/or others to validate your outrage.

Rugby League players as a whole are not underpaid compared to other sports in Australia. The top 20 cricketers and rugby players may earn more than their NRL counterparts, but average it out and it's a different story. There are 400 professional league players earning a minimum of 55k per annum (RU and Cricket would only have about 100 players earning that much) , and probably an average between them of around 170k. AFL players would average more, but they've a better TV deal and get double our crowds.

Overall I don't get the whole jersey debate, as others have said but them cheap in the off season... like NOW. I don't see the need to buy a new jersey every year, it's a waste of money and some years jerseys look better than others. Plus it's always good when you go to the footy and see everyone wearing all different jerseys from different eras.

And the current jerseys last for years too, they're not like a t shirt or a pair of runners which has a years shelf life. My Eels jersey is in as a good a condition as it was when I bought it 5 years ago.

To be fair I pulled on this years Roosters jersey and I'd rather keep my replica. Has some strange fabric on the front to help players with their ball control... A lot more technology in a Rugby League jersey than a soccer jersey.

Then again wouldn't have to spend 50 cents on a tray every time I get some beers, the jersey could essentially pay for itself.

Exactly right. The authentic jerseys are made of thicker material and have the "tie-down" or fighting strap. They are C$320.

The equivalent "replica" jersey, which is what the "authentic" NRL jerseys are the equivalent to, are C$130.

make a stand...

save your $150... invest only $7 instead on coloured markers...

you can then wear your jersey with two types of pride... team pride & the pride of knowing you made it youself..

I have no problem paying $170.00 for a Storm jersey. I just dont buy them every year. I have the "04" home, "06" away and "09" away and i still wear them all.

The thing that annoys me is that i want to buy won for my 18 month old son and because i have not seen a best and less anywhere sell them i would have to buy it from Peter Wynns, (not even Rebel or League and Legends have that size) for $100.

Now that is a ripoff.

Rugby League has a very small market, both cricket and RU have markets much larger. AFL has a larger market, smaller Tv rating just but a larger market spread over a larger part of Australia.

Based on studies done including comparisons of US sports the average RL salary is approx 15-20% inflated on the market size.

No RL is worth more than $200K based on the size of the market.
The money floating around for TV rights is false and not market related except for the fact that it drives up the price of foxtel and increases the number of ads during Ch9s excuse for NRL coverage.

The only dopes complaining about the price are the dopes who buy a new jersey every single season, what dumbasses.

$130 every 2 or 3 years is nothing.
