NRL rebellion: Rugby league clubs want CEO Dave Smith gone or threaten to leave comp

Ultimately what gets said on an internet forum has negligible impact on real world events except for perhaps informing some people who are unable to comprehend the subtext of News Limited's coordinated propaganda.

So it would be nice if it were to all go away but I also don't really see the harm in it. As a principle though I prefer not to let bullshit go unchallenged.

For example in response to that article.

1. If you use your media to say 'we're not talking to you for 2 years' then almost straight after you use the same media to put out a story saying 'we'll negotiate if we can get X' it shows that the former statement is BS

2. As stated that paragraph --

If it were a decent news organisation the subby would have his knuckles severely smacked.

3. But Gyngell is a shrewd operator. Saying upfront "Yes we'll give it to Fox" is bad business. It is my understanding that the NRL have to approve any on-sell back to a subscription operator. So if Fox wants it back, they will have to meet both 9 & the NRL's terms. The NRL will be acting as a gatekeeper. And Fox won't purchase the Saturday game until they're sure that they can buy the rest of the NRL rights. This forces all parties to come to terms.

4. Ultimately though it was News' desire to secure a Foxtel-10 domination of the NRL rights blocking out rival bids by refusing to partner with other F2A operators. So even Fox getting Saturday night back is only one step of the way back to their original plan.

5. I don't believe that Gyngell has ruled out selling the NRL to 10 -- if it gets him a foot in the door with the AFL because as much as he wouldn't want to split the halo he would also like to split 7's halo. The current asking price for the Saturday AFL slot was rejected -- one because it was overpriced but also I suspect on purpose simply to allow more room to negotiate later on.

6. Those News Corp $ amounts are dribble. Remember this is the same organisation that said 9 wouldn't offer more than $600m. The only amount that matters is the final amount.

Doc, I was being sarcastic. I love reading peoples opinions, some of it is quite informative. However, some think just because you're not in the inner circle you can't have an opinion.

Asked if he was a seller, Mr Gyngell told The Australian: “We don’t want to sell anything, and we’re very happy with what we’ve bought. We think it’s the best deal for Nine.”
This is significant because it shows Mr Gyngell appears willing to offload one of his four prime- time matches to defray high costs, and eliminate the burden of having too many NRL matches on Nine’s primary channel, putting a squeeze on scarce inventory.

That's the worst journalism I've ever read.

It is the type of shit I'd do with my sources in school assignments.

Just re-read your comment and saw how it could be interpreted both ways so fair enough. It's sad though because I do genuinely wish we could just talk about footballs itself but it's obvious News Ltd won't relent any time soon.

I don't think it's about being in an inner circle per se, rather it's the difference between basing an argument on logic and fact vs emotion and/or trolling. Sure, there's a lot of people who hate News Ltd and are reacting thus but most seem to have the facts well in hand.

I think there has been a feeble attempt to create a false equivalency -- that somehow the NRL management's other flaws have some bearing in supporting News Ltd arguments. Yes the NRL isn't perfect but on the issue at hand -- negotiation of the TV rights -- everything else (club disagreement, expansion, rule interpretations etc) is irrelevant.

If you look solely at the facts in relation to the specific issue and the contradictory flow of information, News Limited's agenda is rather evident. That's journalism 101. That's probably why the vast major of fans are calling their BS out for what it is.

I can imagine the meeting with the editor went:

Editor: "Dazza, great piece on the NRL rights. Really nailed that one. I've just fixed a couple of issues with the grammar I want to go over with you before we go to print"

Dazza D: "Sure boss, what is it?"

Editor: "Well in the paragraph where you quote Gyngell you misspelled "appears to be willing to offload one of his four prime time matches" as "would not be selling any matches". Just a small issue, I am surprised the spell checker didn't pick it up first"

Dazza D: "But hang on, thats..."

Editor: "Great, so we will go to print with this then. Now how about those BWS giants on the weekend?"

Dazza walks into the bathroom, stares in the mirror and sheds a solitary tear for his lost dream of been a real journalist.

News Corp to demand Fox Sports Saturday NRL game from Nine
Darren Davidson The Australian,

News Corp executives will demand the National Rugby League reverse its controversial decision to strip the top-rating Saturday evening match from Fox Sports.
It is understood that the Nine Network, which secured the game as part of its $925 million TV rights deal with the NRL, has not ruled out surrendering the game ? provided Fox Sports agrees to sell Nine a Saturday Australian Football League game.

Sources said Fox Sports, wholly owned by News, would refuse to even contemplate paying a premium for rights to the remaining NRL matches unless it can regain control of the prized Saturday match

It is understood Mr Gyngell is prepared to trade the Saturday match if Fox Sports is prepared to sell him a Saturday AFL fixture under the recently signed $2.508 billion record deal.

Asked if he was a seller, Mr Gyngell told The Australian: ?We don?t want to sell anything, and we?re very happy with what we?ve bought. We think it?s the best deal for Nine.?
This is significant because it shows Mr Gyngell appears willing to offload one of his four prime- time matches to defray high costs, and eliminate the burden of having too many NRL matches on Nine?s primary channel, putting a squeeze on scarce inventory.

Any move to hand the Saturday match back to Fox Sports, needs Mr Gyngell to sell the wholesale rights back to the NRL,

It?s also believed Mr Gyngell has ruled out selling one of his four top picks to the Seven and Ten networks because he does not want to share the code?s sponsors with another free-to-air operator in a tough advertising market. This would boost for Fox Sports?s chances of retaining the Saturday match,

Sources say News Corp will not match the $530m figure, let alone pay $700m. ?The value of the remaining rights is significantly less,? one source said, noting that a $400m price tag had even been proposed during private discussions last week.

So basically Nine sells Sat rights back to NRL who then sells them to Fox.

Guys we can't really argue with this, because once again these 'sources' have spoken.

It's woeful journalism and this will be costing News circulation. The Australian pretends to be a serious paper. As for the article not only did Gyngell deny it, it looks like Gyngell can't give Fox a game without completely renegotiating the rights. Interesting that Ten aren't getting a game considering they're soon to be News Corp lackeys, I have doubts whether they'll get the extra AFL game either because Foxtel seem to want as much exclusive sport as possible.

If anyone didn't watch offsiders this morning check it out on iview

I like what the guy from the project said

The only reason to watch foxtel is for sport. For anything else people are illegally downloading content or using netflix. In five years time there will be no reason to pay for foxtel.

Richard Freeman on the Dead Set Legends on Triple M on Saturday made the point that for TV, live sport is the most important asset as all recorded programs are available from another source (e.g. streaming sites, DVD etc). Hence he reckoned that Fox Sports needs the NRL more than the NRL need Fox.

Why don't the NRL clubs who have been named as wanting to rebel come out and deny these allegations?

That would really put a dent in this smear campaign.

I don't recall any clubs actually being named. It is just all News Corp crap as they have used the old "sources close to" or "it is believed" kinds of stories. As soon as one club boss fronts up to deny it, it breathes life into a non-event.

A brazen non sequitur if I've ever seen one; news ltd's forte.

They said 12 clubs (exlcusing tigers, dragons, newcastle, titans) were interested but Pappas came out straight away and said Souths weren't involved (despite their logo being pretty prominant in the piece).

Love Brad Walter just dismissing alot of this as News Ltd Propaganda.

That was partly my point. New Ltd have said 12 clubs, but only named those excluded and not those supposedly pushing for it. That indicates a lack of any credibility in their claim, because if they had any evidence, they would not hesitate to name the clubs behind it.

Haha, Crawley knows he is talking absolute shit and Freddy calls him on it straight.

Crawley goes straight into worst case scenarios that will never happen, won't name any clubs and has the gall to plead "don't shoot the messenger."

Why wouldn't the clubs be involved in discussions around the new broadcast deals? News trying to spin this as crisis meetings is just more nonsense.

These f**kers should be ashamed of themselves.

Ok mate makes sense, I think in the end Fox will get Super Saturday back as there is a Australian article that hints at that which I just posted.
This could mean that the negative stories might slow down from news.

This is their evidence...

Asked if he was a seller, Mr Gyngell told The Australian: ?We don?t want to sell anything, and we?re very happy with what we?ve bought. We think it?s the best deal for Nine.?

and 9 need to sell back to the NRL who then need to sell to FOX for this to happen. So basically, its bullshit...

Crawley is quoting Wilson who is quoting Kent who is quoting Rothfield who is quoting Hooper - so basically Rupert has created his own human Centipede of morons.

Tough way to earn a coin.

Chook.
