NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

I know it’ll probably never happen but the answer to a lot of these questions is remove the salary cup and bring in promotion/relegation.
Big funded clubs will rise and bring in big investors. current so called smaller teams like some here state (Sharks example) will find their niche and proper belonging. existing clubs like Newtown,Bears, Ipswich Jets, have the chance to make it to a top division and aren’t exiled in State comps. New areas can be bought in, Perth sides for example could be heavily backed. It really is the solution to all these problems.
In theory its nice

But $30 mil operation v $2 mil operation

Will never initially work

But what it does do is bring interest and $

I would have play a NSW Cup premiers, Qld Cup winners, NZ Cup winners and NRL wooden spooners promotion series played in a 3 round round robin series at the NRL wooden spooners home venue

Immediately teams like Perth will want to join a revamped NSW Cup

But this will only work when National RG is in place

I’ve answered that

clubs are lazy

if you don’t think it’s a good source of juniors why did the dolphins just link up with them ?

uncle Wayne must rate them

heck even the storm are using their juniors

most nrl clubs are content to do very little actual junior code elopement then sign established players from development clubs

the current system provides very little incentive for clubs to be developmental ones

Clubs are willing to pay $700k in transfer fees to fly an ESL player to Australia, but not a talented junior Papuan?

BTW; if the clubs were run by such geniuses they wouldn’t get themselves into the predicaments that they regularly get themselves into. They’d also be capable of running their multimillion dollar football clubs as sustainable businesses independent of their other business interests, which, unfortunately, most of them seem totally incapable of doing.
Funny how the idiot Rupert Murdoch has been happy for decades to run many of his newspapers at a loss being propped up by other arms of his business. And don`t talk to me about influence because many of those papers, especially the American ones, he only owned because he liked owning prestigious newspapers.
Maybe not dissimilar to a Leagues Club funding an N.R.L. club.

I wonder if there’s any scouting of the digicell cup or jnr clubs in png? many rl clubs have English scouts looking at jnrs and snrs over there and advising them of possible good young players.

Why have the Hunters only had 1 or 2 players in 7 seasons?

That’s your argument ?

your comparing signing an established super league player with one that needs to be developed ?

you know how silly this argument is don’t you ?

if png can’t produce good amounts of nrl players then what chance do we have in wa and sa going for the dregs that couldn’t make it in afl

A-LEAGUE dots on the map mentality....
This is exactly what the AFL do.. to what end?
Yes its a money maker... but its not keeping Gold Coast, Brisbane or Greater Western Sydney healthy with any juniors.. they are sending kids from other states to play there and aren't growing the AFL pie so to speak...
I've said this before, many times.. stop looking for hand outs, stop expecting the ARLC to hand a license to an area, they will only hand it to a recognised running club... fancy the league handing a license to Perth going from sucking at SGball straight to NRL 1st grade bypassing any other lower level comp,
you want a leg up... howbout give in to the bears or go see easts firehawks pitch to them that perth has potential, this whole leg up mentality will only breed laziness, and handouts like AFL

To the end of $2billion revenue difference and more to come. Any smart business knows that you have to invest to make more. The numbers don’t lie.

re perth or nz2 for that matter and second tier, there is no pokie club, no nrl club or no govt handout to fund it so who pays for a team in the second tier that can’t make any money because no one’s interested in the second tier? I have no doubts a perth nrl club will partner with at least one established qrl or nsw cup team to strengthen pathways, as well as hopefully significantly invest in nrlwa and our own pathways to turn the trickle of nrl players currently coming out of WA into a stronger stream.

Numbers are numbers, dont mean shit, all you care about is the current broadcast deal, we are talking talent from regions that produce it, not clubs that dont exist in perth wanting a 1st grade licence... if the pathways work and link up with a qrl side like easts, then why do we need perth?

Looks like the RLPA is going to try and grow the NRL Top 30 to a 40 man pool and establishing a $700k second tier cap for those 10 players

Because under the model we have you essentially need both Mugab. You need clubs that bring in the money which can subsidise smaller regional clubs that produce more talent.

For example the Storm via their existence have subsidised or supported a lot of Sydney and small regional clubs. Without a club such as them or the Broncos the TV deals would be a lot less and the grants that go to clubs would be a lot less. The hope for a Perth side is a similar effect to those two clubs: one side by themselves in a big market which would provide a big kick in sponsorship and TV money.

Look this is actually a good post

but the storm haven’t subsidised anyone else they are a drain on other clubs for players and for a share of tv rights

you later use the broncos and that’s a better example

Thanks Wb. The rights are a lot higher having a Melbourne side in the competition though. Even if you wanted to disregard the Melbourne in front of their name, they have greater support than any of the Sydney sides (Souths and Parra would perhaps challenge) and that means grater cash

I can’t read the article but it has something to do with the actual thread rather than reserve grade

Yeh Perth is nailed on

proactive state govt gets their their state a team

other places that are desperate for a team need their govt to step up with their chequebooks

I feel for the dolphins vlandys should’ve made it a condition of the license a new 300 million stadium at Redcliffe especially with that states infrastructure spend up to the Olympics

for Perth the arlc should demand 100 milllion plus upgrade to their ground as it’s not fit in its current state for a new team and a minimum spend each year on juniors (say 5 million pa)
