NRL's growth mindset points to 18th team. And it ain't Perth.

Putting Perth in next over nz is a big mistake in my opinion but that’s how they want to go

super rugby is on its knees

Perth should wait till team 20
If anything RU is fkd here in Aus, that means we should be targeting Perth, as we already have teams in other areas that have RU teams, except for Perth... thats if we are targeting RU... then there's the twiggy influence to deal with, maybe he likes the idea of another rugby team presence sharing the same ground, maybe he doesn't and shits on everything, just as news ltd has shat all over the dolphins..
Either way if RU is weak in Aus, Perth should be the go

Perth does nothing in us taking over from union

and Perth will never be more than a market where we get a good minor percentage (say ten percent)

Perth does zero damage to afl

a second nz nrl team does a lot of damage to union. It actually makes a difference strategically

if league pushes out union from the pacific (largely) we gain a huge player base plus more corporate support that goes to union comes to us

plus as payback for banning rugby league in France it would be hilarious to see it

I understand we are on a Rugby League forum and I`m a hater of union as much as the next fanatical Rugby League supporter (christ many`s the time I`ve given one p. ftzsmmns an almightly serve in the comments section attached to his articles in the SMH) but when thinking of union in this country I`m always reminded of Macbeth`s line in Shakespeare`s play by the same name: " we`ve scorched the snake not killed it".
As much as I loathe to bring Phil Gould into a conversation where Shakespeare has been quoted I`m also reminded of his observation " the paranoid survive". The upshot is I won`t be satisfied until union has no Tv deal or Tv coverage in this country, and we are a distance from achieving that yet.

They are never recovering from their current situation.

yes they are like a weed waiting to grow if league stumbles

but it was only because of super league they had any chance

their average crowds are down 80 percent

their tv ratings are on par with women’s nrl

the sports a joke

the sad thing is the nrl actually did nothing to help collapse it it’s all of their own doing

though good old lote tuqiri helped by getting 8 million off them towards the end

Currently union is alternative for players who dont make it to the NRL

Setup NRL Reserve Grade and improve the NSW and NZ Cup properly and play regular Pacific Cups will do the most damage to RU
We still aren’t getting all their good players

max jorgesson is one we’ve missed and his dad played league

Steve edmeds son is also at the Waratahs and he’s a very good half

Another NRL club in Queensland will do huge damage to Fumbleballs expansion plans in Queensland.

The NRL getting their act together and finally admitting Brisbane 2 is the worst case scenario for them.

The Lions have a good niche and enjoy bandwagon support when they are going well but it was only just before covid their average attendances had slumped into the teens. They still very much rely on expats who live in Brisbane and have adopted the Lions and expats who support the away team for the bulk of their audience. TV ratings show that their total support isn't that much greater than the crew that show up to the Gabba.

This is not good for any rival code in Brisbane. Before Brisbane had a second NRL side, there was room to breathe for them and if you were a casual sports fan that wanted something to do when the Broncos weren't in town, they had clear air. Not any more. This was a must from the NRL and as we all know, was well overdue.

Absolutely

like napoleon over reaching for Moscow

then hopefully the collapse in brisbane impacts the swans

the swans to be fair to the afl are an excellent expansion club for them in a way none of the others are
The Midgets are a classic case of fumbleball over reaching itself as they are a total basket case who throw freebies out like people do confetti as weddings

Another NRL club will really eat into fumbleball junior playing numbers and the Dolphins are already doing that and the season hasn't started yet

So you don't believe that the midgets are a basket case and throw freebies about like people do confetti at a wedding? Interesting
Never said that, I said that they are investing for the long term, not the short. Did having two sydney clubs help them deliver a $643mill tv deal? Very probably a part of it. Can the AFL afford long term investment in new markets, yes and even more so from 2025. Prior to admission did AFL have all the major metro centres covered therefore had the luxury of using new places for new markets? Yep.

Have they been a raging initial success? Nope. Where the Storm (off the field) nope. Will they grow, probably. Does continuing to play the 'national' sport card help AFL revenue? Undoubtably. Do the AFL make more money than us because they have a stronger national metro club presence? It would seem so, a lot more money.

But we digress and this is more fight club than expansion discussion, though I would say that expansion into new markets takes time and investment, but eventually pays off if done right.
