anasta / bird cannot be up for five eighth, unless they do something spectacular in CvC. Also jennings can leave.

Lyon at five eight will be as effective as Gasnier at five eight. In the centers I can live with, but not five eight.

On the slim chance Hayne is picked at fullback, does anyone think Luke Burt is a chance of claiming the other wing spot? (Morris has the other).

Regardless of the usual arguments about who should play where, I like how the Blues team is probably going to look this year, with us steadily getting better and QLD slowly losing the rocks with they built their current team upon (Lockyer, Price and Civo most obviously in the near future)

Very excited. Our time is getting nearer!

have always rated Burt... so many people were bagging him at the start of this year in particular, with him keeping inu out of the team at the time etc. he's a brilliant, and smart player. seems like he's been around forever, but he's actually only 28 and probably has a fair few years of footy ahead of him yet.

wouldn't look out of place at origin at all... and would be far superior to the likes of turner and mcmanus in recent history.

well my pick is soward, but that isn't likely to happen seems he isn't even in a CvC side or Australia, btw Lockyer being picked as 5/8th is rubbish, i know he will be there till he retires, but really...

I picked my team based on what the selectors will most likely pick, sorry for not mentioning that, but i wont be surprised if they pick Lyon in 5/8th in origin, seems we dont have any stand out 5/8th. I'm really all out of options for us, it seems no matter what halve / centre combination's we put in, we have too many liabilities.

Why can't Bird? He is in history as being NSWs best 6 since Freddy...

I suppose Bird could be considered as NSW's "best 6" in recent years, but the standard we're comparing to is pretty low. NSW won the odd game with him at 5/8, but never looked like winning a series.

I think a better description of Bird's performance in SOO is "NSW's best lock forward who happened to have a number 6 on his jersey".

If Bird is picked at 5/8, I don't envy the poor halfback who has to play alongside him and shoulder all the kicking burden -- he'll have Queenslanders swarming all over him every 4th and 5th tackle.

big issue for mine, too. Bird would be in my team somewhere... possibly at lock, with Lewis on the bench. i don't envy the selectors one bit for having to make decisions like this.

whether they pick Gidley or Hayne at fullback, they will have a second kicker option there... but neither can really be relied on for their kicking abilities. i really think both halves need strong kicking games against QLD.

Noddy should do ok at worst on his own when it comes to kicking, plus we (probably) will have Ennis at hooker and he is a handy kicker too, plus his combination with Noddy.

If we have 9. Ennis 7. Noddy 6. Bird 1. Gids/Hayne we should be ok

PS: I think Bird has won some MOM's at 6 for NSW...the guy has excelled there in the past, and if they pick him with some reasonable amount of form on the board for the Titans I will be ok with that.

I love it how posters bring up Bird's two MotM awards. I know it's probably been forgotten in a wave of dissapointment after four straight losses but the first game Bird got his MotM award, QLD lost 4 players and still nearly won the game. The other game really was a rort, Wallace was easily heads and shoulders above Bird, it was really between him and Stewart for MotM.

Pick him at five eigth at your own peril, but if anything else, he should be in the backrow.

We have too many backrowers, and i can see the selectors thinking that they need Bird in the side, so they'll just pick him at 5/8th cause it works in terms of picking the other backrowers.

That's how I see it too.

If it does happen that way, New South Wales HAVE to use it to their advantage. They've got to be able to tear the Queensland forwards apart and up the middle. If they fail to do so then it'll be another year of dissapointment.

I'd give Soward a run and have Bird brain on the bench as a back up in case Sowie has a brain explosion and loses the plot.

You're probably right, but I don't know if NSW can afford to go into the series with only an "ok" kicking game centered around the one player. You only need one kick to get charged down, or one bloke getting tackled on the 5th, to give Qld great field position followed by a try.

In the NRL you might be able to get away with that, but not in Origin.

I just don't think it's worth it playing Bird at 5/8 when we have other options who can actually kick (Carney, Soward, etc.), who are in good form, and who are genuine halves who have played in that position for most of their careers.

If Bird had actually won a series for NSW playing at 5/8 then I would feel differently, but that's not the case. If I remember correctly, the last time Bird played 5/8 for NSW we lost 30-0. Obviously, that wasn't his fault alone, but I do remember that the NSW halves looked completely ineffectual in that game.

The 5/8 position is too important to just shove somebody in there because you can't squeeze him into the lineup in his proper position.

Having said all of that, no doubt the selectors in all their wisdom will just pick the players they love (Bird, Lyon, Gidley, etc.) and then try to find a position for each of them, so we'll probably end up with a non-specialist 5/8 yet again.

Either NSW hooker, be it Ennis or Farah have good kicking games.

And if NSW pick Hayne at Fullback they have another choice.

That said, for mine the idea of Bird and Kimmorley is very very very bad.

I watched this combo for Cronulla and it did not succeed.
