NSW Origin

Here's a article about Stephen Crichton. I hope he earns a call up, and the same applies to Yeo, Martin and Api.

Tom Trbojevic's withdrawal from NSW Origin duty will kick off a finals shoot-out between aspiring Blues rookies Stephen Crichton, Campbell Graham and Jarrod Croker for his vacant centre spot.

Trbojevic's scratching for the end of season Origin campaign was confirmed on Thursday due to his slower than expected recovery from a shoulder injury, coming on the back of three months out with a torn hamstring.

Blues coach Brad Fittler lauded Trbojevic's "selfless decision" to rule himself out, opening up a slot in the NSW backline.

Trbojevic was among his state's best last season at right centre with James Tedesco occupying his usual fullback role.

But already facing the prospect of playing just one NRL game in five months leading into the November 4 series opener, Trbojevic's delayed recovery from a partially dislocated shoulder led to the 23-year-old pulling the pin.

Kotoni Staggs's ACL rupture has cost NSW a ready-made replacement on the right edge, while St George Illawarra's Zac Lomax has also warmed to the role this year after shifting from fullback.

Lomax remains an option for NSW despite not being picked in Fittler's initial extended squad announced on Sunday, with the Blues coach wary of committing a host of players to training duties within days of their regular season COVID-19 restrictions ending.

The likes of Crichton, Croker, Graham and Eels captain Clint Gutherson hold a distinct advantage however with the looming finals series to further their Origin selection chances.

All aside from Gutherson play their club football at left centre, a role Jack Wighton filled for the Blues superbly in last year's series, though his utility value could result in an edge shift for the Raiders star.

Crichton, just 23 games into his career and only two weeks past his 20th birthday, and Croker, 30 and with 276 NRL outings, offer NSW polar opposite options out wide.

Speaking earlier in the week, Fittler praised Crichton's breakout season leading into his first finals outing where he will mark the game's best centre in Roosters star Joey Manu.Fittler also indicated a decent run through the finals would greatly benefit individuals at the selection table, as was the case in years past with post-season Kangaroos tours.

"I know [Crichton] is playing left centre but he's played fullback and they've put him back there at different stages and played him in different positions," Fittler said.

"Having that energy impacts everyone. Coaching staff, teammates, that's why Penrith are going so well at the moment.
"The best teams always have the biggest representation [of players in Origin]. It's just the way it is ...

"Definitely the grand finalists, they'll have a couple of smokies for sure. And that's why we need to leave a bit of space [in the 27-man squad]. That's the reward, that's always been the reward."

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary has advocated rep footy rewards for his players more than once during their run to the minor premiership.

While Nathan Cleary is a lock for the sky-blue No.7 jersey, teammates including Crichton, back-rowers Liam Martin and Isaah Yeo and hooker Api Koroisau each have varying claims for NSW selection.

"I'd like to see all our boys get representative honours if they deserve it," Ivan Cleary said in his weekly pre-game media conference, which began 15 minutes after Trbojevic's withdrawal was confirmed.

"The better the team goes the more opportunities there are.

"Those honours will come on the back of good performances for your team, club and particularly in finals games it's only going to help.

"We're confident in the way Stephen has played this year and the way he's prepared this week. He certainly goes into this finals series full of confidence."

This week will be the game that sets him on origins path.
He will be targeted by the Chook’s, if he steps up he will be in prime position.
It’s quite amazing how quickly he has developed this year.

For those few who are calling for Mitchell Pearce to be included in the Origin side, at the expense of Nathan, seriously needs to look at todays match. Nathan completely out shone him.

Jerome isn't interest in representing NSW either. Bugger.

Jarome Luai is ready to turn his back on State of Origin football in favour of representing New Zealand or Samoa.

Luai grew up in Mt Druitt and is eligible to represent NSW in State of Origin, but according to teammate Nathan Cleary, Luai has no desire to wear the Sky Blue jersey.

Under the game’s eligibility rules, Luai can represent NSW if he elects to play for Samoa, a tier-two nation, but will be ineligible should he represent New Zealand.

Should he pick Samoa, Luai could one day play alongside Cleary for the Sky Blues and form a formidable partnership that would replicate their form for the Panthers.

Luai’s form in the past month has been exceptional and led Cleary to call him the Panthers best player.

“But he has been unbelievable. The last month he’s been our best player. The energy he brings around the team, some of the stuff he does on the field, I’m in awe of it, he has so much talent and X-factor,” Cleary said.

“He’s always happy and has that infectious smile. I’m lucky to play alongside him.”

The Panthers booked their spot in the preliminary final after a one-point win over the Roosters on Friday night.

I don't think anyone has been suggesting that for quite some time, except maybe Mitchell's Mum. I thought Pearce tried hard but Ponga let the side down badly with his errors.

Nathan is a certainty, it would be good if Jarome could play alongside him. I'm sure he is eligible, born and bred in NSW, St Marys junior. Maybe doesn't want to commit to Australia.

He doesn't. If he committed to Somoa he would.

I'm surprised about Klemmer, and Graham.

Brad Fittler has added Daniel Saifiti to his squad for next month's State of Origin series while drafting in Dragons centre Zac Lomax following Tom Trbojevic's withdrawal due to shoulder damage.

But there was no room for Saifiti's Knights teammates Mitchell Pearce, who was the Blues' halfback when Nathan Cleary was injured for game three last year when NSW won the trophy with a dramatic last-minute try, and David Klemmer, along with Sharks skipper Wade Graham.

Players not selected can still be brought into the squad at a later date but Sunday's announcement indicates Cleary is a shoo-in to regain the No.7 jersey.

Graham and Klemmer have been integral parts of NSW's squads in recent years - the Cronulla second-rower returned from an ACL tear to play the last two games of the 2019 contest while the Newcastle prop also lined up in the Origin III win in Sydney which sealed back-to-back series triumphs for Fittler.

Get Caught Up: Finals Week 1

Get Caught Up: Finals Week 1

Lomax and Saifiti pair were the only names added on Sunday to the guaranteed selections for the 27-man squad, which will accumulate over the course of the NRL finals, before being finalised after the grand final on October 25.

Origin kicks off in Adelaide on November 4 before matches in Sydney and Brisbane over the course of three successive Wednesdays.

Saifiti made his Origin debut in game two last year and backed up in the series-clinching third match while Lomax is yet to play for the Blues.

"He just goes forward, he's got great offloads, he's got a quick play-the-ball, I really enjoyed him in the team last year," Fittler said.

"It was a real thrill of mine to tell Zac Lomax that he's part of the 27-man squad.

"His name's been tossed up pretty much all year, we've got a fair few centres at the moment that are going well and also still playing so when Tom Trbojevic went down, Zac Lomax was always going to be the shadow for Tom."

They join Dragons duo Tyson Frizell and Cameron McInnes, Manly lock Jake Trbojevic and Broncos prop Payne Haas as the only other selections thus far from the teams eliminated from the Telstra Premiership.

NSW Blues squad
  • Payne Haas (Brisbane Broncos)
  • Jake Trbojevic (Manly Warringah Sea Eagles)
  • Zac Lomax (St George Illawarra Dragons)
  • Tyson Frizell (St George Illawarra Dragons)
  • Cameron McInnes (St George Illawarra

He can play for Samoa and NSW if he really wanted.
