St. George Illawarra 42 def. Brisbane Broncos 34 (Oates 3, Levi, Seage, Lumley tries; Frisby 5/6, Cullen 1/1 goals).

Disappointing game. We were in it until the second half where we surrendered 18 points. Scored a few late tries but they were mere consolations.

Brisbane Broncos 46 (Lumley 2, Levi, Nikorima, Timu, Oates, Alvaro, Frisby; Frisby 7/8 goals) def. West Tigers 30

Pretty big win for the Broncos. 5 U/18s made their debut and it was against the second place side in the entire competition.

Broncos team named for Canberra game

BRONCOS: Rhett Webster, Daniel Levi, Soape Palau, Corey Oates, Tristian Lumley, Louis Frisby, Kodi Nikorima, Stephen Coombe, Chris Binge, Daniel Alvaro, Caleb Timu, Benn Malley, Aaron Whitchurch; Interchange (from): Billy Brittain, Travis Peeters, Josh Seage, Brandon Lee

Source: nrl.com

The team seems to change up a bit, are they getting hit by injuries again? I noticed Cameron Cullen is not named...

Interesting to see Whitchurch named. Wonder if this is a demotion or the under 20s are struggling with injuries. Or maybe he is sick of catching a cold out on the wing.

Yeah, a lot of those changes came last week.

I wrote this in the NYC thread last week...forgot to copy/paste it here...

Bigimus Petermus said:
A ton of changes for the Broncos.

OUT
#2 Rian Diffey - Dropped (Wynnum Manly Colts)
#7 Cam Cullen - Injured
#9 Mitchell Moore - Dropped (Wynnum Manly Colts)
#17 Brett Coutts - Injured

IN
#2 Rhett Webster - Norths MM Cup (AIS Representative)
#4 Soape Palau - Wynnum MM Cup
#14 Billy Brittain - Norths MM Cup
#17 Brandon Lee - Redcliffe MM Cup (AIS Representative)

Norths MM Cup player Richard Tuala also ended up playing ahead of Stephen Coombe who pulled out with an injury. I'm actually unsure what happened to Coutts, he may not be injured but I couldn't find him anywhere. Assuming he is though, this is our current injury list...

Matthew Berwick
Jerome Leedy
Cam Cullen
Brett Coutts
Ajuma Adams
Zach Koitka

With Mitchell Frei & Lachlan Maranta playing up in Q Cup.

Thankfully Aaron Whitchurch drops back down to NYC in his favoured backrow position in what should be a big boost. Going to need it too as the Raiders are playing some good footy and just defeated an extremely talented Warriors side on Sunday.

Canberra Raiders 40 def. Brisbane Broncos 12 (Malley, Timu tries; Frisby 2/2 goals)

Not a pretty game from the sounds of it.

Also I don't know the full story but 2011 Qld U/18s player Francis Molo played for Norths in MM cup on the weekend. Originally it was believed he'd left Brisbane and headed over to NZ. Whether he's still at the Broncos remains to be seen.

Anybody else watch the U20s Origin? If so what did you guys make of the Broncos reps?

1. Lachlan Maranta - Got better as the game wore on for mine. Didn't seem to be running freely in the first half, took awhile to get himself involved but by the end he was one of only a few looking to attack the ball.

5. Aaron Whitchurch - Dale Copley v2. Started the game well nabbing an unlikely try and nearly setting one up before the referee called it back for a suspect offside call but then he made a few costly errors out of dummy half and completely muffed a bomb take. But he did make a couple of nice charges which reminded me a bit of Plowman back in the day. Think he'll end up being that sort of Ryan Hoffman type backrow.

12. Caleb Timu - A little out of his depth I thought. Still made some good metres and was skillful enough to put a grubber in for himself and pick it up but didn't quite have the strength he's allegedly shown at club footy.

13. Mitchell Frei - Reminded me of Thaiday in the Test. Involved but didn't really bust the line open and wasn't much of a handful for the opposition. Got through plenty of work in defence and such but a bit disappointed he didn't put his hand up enough with the footy.

14. Benn Malley - Dallas Johnson esque. I look at his stats. sometimes and scratch my head thinking wondering why we keep selecting him but he really did a good job out there. Plenty of quality tackles that put the much bigger NSW pack down and maybe some gutsy runs through the middle.

15. Corey Oates - Wasn't ready for this game at all. Let in a soft try to Siejka that proved to be the match winner and wasn't really sighted in attack. Can't be too harsh on him, he's really young and he was up against an NRL standard pack. Did do a couple of decent things here & there but definitely not a game you'd put on his highlight reel.

16. Travis Peeters - Bit of a Scotty Anderson performance. Couple of solid runs, a mistake and not much else. Was very much a smokey selection for all the hard work he's done at 20s but I don't know if he was up to this standard.

Overall, I thought it was a good effort from the Qlders in an extremely scrappy game.

and he was up against an NRL standard pack.

Kidding yourself. A few of them may have played NRL but they're nowhere near a NRL standard pack. If that forward pack played together in the NRL, they'd run last. They wouldn't run top 4 in Queensland or NSW Cup.

The game pretty well summed up the NYC. Ordinary.

Most of them have and most of them will play NRL this year. They've all trained with the NRL squad for years and are further developed than 18 year old Timu, which was my point.

Better luck with your next snipe.

You might be right but I think BP's point still stands. It was always going to be tough for QLD to match it with a team with several players having reasonable NRL experience (with a few of those being in the forward pack). Tbh I am quite surprised to hear that the score-line was so close 18-14.

And it can't have been too much of an NYC game otherwise the score line would be more like 42-34

Edrick Lee's first try... wow, that guy really looks like a player (saw highlights). Wish I had fox :p

I don't have fox. Big Pete. But was interested in game and how our broncos under20's went. Thanks for posting your thoughts. I've watched the highlight reel this morning on the foxsports site. I'm surprised by how close the score was considering nsw had a much more experienced pack on paper. Question Big Pete. Has this game proven to be a winner and deserves to stay as a fixture? Is it best as a stand alone game which I believe it does rather than a curtian raiser to a origin game?

It was an entertaining game but you couldn't vouch for it's quality. Was a massive drop-a-thon in stages and while it was cool to see some U20s stars featured I think it'd be a better idea to do an Australia vs. New Zealand match given all the talented Kiwis in the Toyota Cup.

Save the Origin game as a pre-game exhibition.

In other news.

Norths Devils lost the MM semi on the weekend to Townsville Stingers 34-23 in Townsville. It was the first time a side from South Queensland had to travel & I believe played a big role in the result.

In better news Redcliffe won their semi against the Northern Pride and will face the Stingers at Wynnum this weekend in the GF.

Round 8

Gold Coast Titans 23 def. Brisbane Broncos 8 (Timu, Palau tries; Frisby 0/2)

Alarm bells are definitely ringing, the Titans hadn't won a game all season, even losing to the equally dismal Sea Eagles yet they outplayed us quite comfortably.

Typical bad performance, can't control possession (59% completion) and leaking way too many points. Unsure if it's because our pack isn't strong enough but they just need to get back to basics & respect the ball more.

Side I'd like to see...

1. Daniel Levi
2. Rhett Webster
3. Matt Berwick
4. Soape Palau
5. Tristian Lumley
6. Bryce Hegarty
7. Louis Frisby
8. Stephen Coombe
9. Mitchell Moore
10. Daniel Alvaro
11. Caleb Timu
12. Benn Malley
13. Chris Binge

14. Billy Brittain
15. Travis Peeters
16. Francis Molo
17. Brandon Lee

Hegarty is more experienced and more reliable than Nikorima who's still adjusting to this level and could use sometime in colts.

Binge just isn't a hooker & I like what I saw of Moore. With Brittain there working in tandem I believe they'll be just fine.

I just want to see how Molo plays. May take him awhile until he's ready but if he plays as well as he did in U/18s last year he could be the go forward we're missing from the bench.

Stat Highlights for the weekend...
1. Daniel Levi - 19 runs (226m), 1 Linebreak, 7 tacklebreaks
11. Caleb Timu - 1 Try, 1 Linebreak, 12 runs (130m), 8 tacklebreaks, 2 offloads, 25 tackles (5 missed)
17. Brandon Lee - 1 Try Assist, 11 runs (100m), 43 tackles (3 missed), 2 offloads, 1 tacklebreak.

Is Francis Molo even a Bronco any more? There were all sorts of rumours about him walking out on the club and his profile was removed from the Broncos web site. I've just checked again and it hasn't been reinstated on the NYC profile page.

Seen them on TV, how?

And yeah, 3 of our best players are playing QCup and we have a few key injuries as well.

Thought it'd be interesting to do a list of former players and where they're at now. Will need some help with a couple...

Tyson Andrews - Prop; Solid player who played for the club until 2010. Playing for Mackay.
Gerard Beale - Backline Utility; Had huge raps on him at age 18 where he was already apart of our senior squad. Injuries really affected his progress in the 20s where he never really got a chance to star. Played everywhere in his stint including the halves and backrow. Is now a Test player and a very handy player, particularly at fullback.
Kerryn Blake - Backrow;
Tom Butterfield - Hooker; Played the impact role off the bench. A lively player who's at the Dolphins.
Josh Coyle - Prop; A solid player who ended up at the Titans. Now plays for Burleigh.
Mitchell Dodds - Prop; Quiet achiever who ended up playing a modest amount of first grade games and is still apart of our senior squad.
Max Dudley - Wing; A lanky winger who made sporadic appearances for the NYC side. Could still be at Easts.
Guy Ford - Backrow; Captained the NYC in '09, a Dallas Johnson type backrow who was tough as teek and stabalise the defence. Went to the Comets in 2010, unsure what's happened since.
Brendon Gibb - Backrow/Centre; Ended up playing centre in the NYC to sure up that side of the field defensively. A solid player who's really developed into a good QCup player since. Could be making his first grade debut in the near future.
Matt Gillett - Backrow; People tend to forget Gillett was actually apart of our NYC squad but it's true. Gillett would have been apart of that GF squad but he snubbed the club for Wests which is where we brought him from. Went to Norths where he played the house down and the rest is history.
Alex Glenn - Backrow; Our inaugural captain, Glenn shifted into the backrow where he showed plenty of promise after arriving as a centre. Is now a Test player.
Matt Handcock - Backrow; Workhorse player who plays for the Dolphins.
Josh Hoffman - Fullback; Had a great season in NYC forcing his way into the senior squad at one point. Just made his Test debut.
Ben Hunt - Halfback; Starred in his debut season ultimately winning the 2008 NYC Player of the Year. Was a complete player in the 20s who had it all, the passing game, kicking game, running game etc. The side fell to pieces when he was pushed up to the Q Cup until his return brought them as far as the prelim. Hasn't made the move into first grade all that well but he's beginning to display the type of form he did in the 20s.
Jared Kahu - Five Eigth; Older brother of current Bronco Jordan, Jared was an enigmatic player who loved to play on instinct. Was offered a contract to join the Cowboys but ultimately he chose to give the game away and I believe he's back in NZ.
Dunamis Lui - Prop/Backrow; An NYC mainstay who lead the club in 2010. A stand out at this level who reminded me a bit of Thaiday & Civoniceiva. Has been affected by injuries so he hasn't developed as quickly as one would like but appears to be in the Broncos long term future.
Andrew McCullough - Hooker; Originally came to the club as a five eigth before Hook shifted into dummy half where he starred and IMO was a constant stand out. Bennett thought the same, handing him a first grade spot despite his limited experience in the position. I don't think his development was ideal, he should have spent sometime in Q Cup to iron out his faults but is beginning to come into his own.
Josh McGuire - Prop; A late starter who like Civoniceiva before him started his career on the wing, before eventually moving closer in field. Was considered too small to play prop by some but proved the doubters wrong by constantly being a star for us upfront. Really skillful too, always had a decent pass on him for a player at that level. Right now he's a potential Test player, such is his form off the bench.
Leon Panapa - Backrow; A skillful lock who didn't really get to play too much NYC for us. Playing for Easts right now.
Wiremu Ratana - Backrow; Was apart of a group of players who were promoted to the QCup and only played one game. Didn't really kick on but is a very handy player for Easts.
Mitch Rivett - Wing; Another lanky winger who was always fairly handy under the high ball. Played a handful of games for the Broncos in 2010 and is still at the Dolphins.
Jacob Samoa - Utility; Played a lot of positions backrow, centre & five eigth but never really kicked on. Playing for Norths.
Luke Samoa - Wing; Brother of Jacob, played QCup for Norths the same year he played NYC. At Norths.
Tariq Sims - Prop/Backrow; Came to the club a lot smaller than he is these days and was actually a winger. Was one of our best in 2009 coming off the bench and tearing teams apart much like he does now for the Cowboys before becoming the best in 2010. Could be an Origin player in the coming weeks.
Michael Spence - Backrow; Was our solid backrow prospect who was handy in both departments. Really reminded me a bit of a young Corey Parker minus the Uncle Fester look. Was responsible for the winning play that brought us into the GF. Was apart of our senior squad before stepping away from the game due to burn out. Returned this year to join Easts.
Nathan Strudwick - Hooker; I remember him having huge raps and another player that was supposed to spend the majority of his time in QCup. Didn't kick on and I believe the game away not long after his NYC stint.
Daniel Tanswell - Winger; Dreadlocked winger from Easts. Didn't play all that many games and I'm unsure if he still plays.
Will Tupou - Centre; Giant Rugby convert who terrorised his much smaller opponents. Was apart of our senior squad and was being moved into the backrow before a serious knee injury derailed him. Made another appearance for us in the 20s where honestly in a 40+ loss he came on, scored two easy tries and looked a class above a far more talented group of players. Went to the Cows where he never quite picked up on the nuances and I believe he's now at the Western Force.
Travis White
Brent Williams - Backrow; A solid player who mainly starred in defence. Is now playing for the Capras.
Josh Williams - Utility; Was like Gibb v2 for us in that he ended up playing the same centre role. A solid player who did his job nothing more. Unsure where he is.
Trent Williamson
Jharal Yow Yeh - Wing; Was a try scoring specialist in the 20s and had a great combo with Hunt who had a knack of finding Yow Yeh in the air which would become his trademark, particularly in 2011. Was a star for us in the NYC GF scoring an unlikely try off a strip. Made his first grade debut the next year and in 2011 became a Test & Origin star. Get well soon JYY!

Might end it there for the time being, will do 2009-10 next.
