Wow, Smith, Doherty - I'm sure the Indians will be spectacularly worried. O'Keefe has a good record, I'm not surprised he hasn't made it yet - he looks like a slightly lower version of Daniel Vettori. Tidy enough, but no venom. I think Beer is the best left arm spinner in the country.

Henriques I can cop, just.

But Smith, Doherty and Maxwell should be nowhere near any Australian squad.

I'm not giving up on smith as a batsmen just yet.

Honestly our batting stocks are so low and he is one of the few FC batsmen around that average in the 40's

He wasn't up to it last time, and I'm not convinced he is actually any better this time around.

Weakest/worst Australian squad I've seen in my time following cricket.

We're lucky India have become shit in Tests, otherwise we would get f**king annihilated.

Just imagine the carnage if Australia fielded that lot against the quintet of Sehwag, Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman.

I would rather rotate the quicks, the Ashes is the most critical one for quicks, you can get away with an average quick in India as spinners should get most of the wickets.

You must have missed the team selection sheet?

Our most dangerous spin bowler is probably Glen Maxwell. Oh dear.

Hopefully they'll get bored and try to tonk Lyon like Sri Lanka did? Then again, he averaged 40 against them, so it's not especially successful either...

This is an odd argument for Cowan?

In his 13 test matches, Cowan averages 32.81 (1 century, 5 halfs).

In a similar span of time covering his last tests, Watson averaged 35.08 (1 century, 10 50s).

Not saying I think Watson deserves the gig, but Cowan gets a surprising (shocking?) amount of love for a guy who has done precious little - and whose career accomplishments suggest he never will do much.
I just believe the notion that we should rearrange the side for no other reason than that Watson might score better at this number is rubbish. If the decision was being made that Cowan wasn't up to it, then fair enough. But to boot him from the side because we want to try to best accomodate Watson isn't good selection policy when they could both easily fit in the side. The team shouldn't be picked around Watson.

I wouldnt mind seeing Henriques in the team, seeing as though Watson will only be batting in India. He has bowled well in recent matches and he's batting in First Class has improved.

If that's the case then how hard is it to let the fans know?

Okeefe is so clearly a better bowler it needs an explanation.

I agree an the Chairman should have said it, but that is my reading between the lines. I hate the fact that Doherty is in, but i doubt O'Keefe would do much with the ball in India

I know Lyon was gosh awful in Australia (most offies are, ask Murali). However in his last sub continent series he was pretty impressive. I have always thought he was a spinner to play in these conditions and rather unsuited to Australian conditions. This is one place where bowling quicker is an ADVANTAGE, in Australia, it is the other way.

Parts of the 80's were pretty bad, we had some nuffies for sure.

But not quite what we've got going on at the moment.

Clarke aside, we really have no solid test cricketers(you could include sids maybe).

Everyone else is either yet to prove themselves, under a form cloud, returning from injury or untalented.

I think we're going to get retribution for the last flogging we gave india here.

It won't be pretty.

Lyon averaged 37 in Sri Lanka
He averages 33 in Australia.

His career has been rubbish. He basically had one good series against NZ where he got 10 wickets @ 12. Apart from that he averages 36 with a strike rate of 74.

I'll be shocked if he averages better than 40 in India, he struggles to control his line and length and has no 'variation' ball.

Nor should the side be picked around Cowan.

Fact is, if Watson is a better option opening the batting than Cowan, then you go for it. It's not about fitting people in, it's about picking the best side available. Ed Cowan at 30 years of age STILL averages less than 40 in FC cricket. I can't see how he's anything more than a stop-gap until the better players get fit??

If Watson is fit, then his superior test record to Cowan (especially opening the batting) ought to see him considered.

It's all rather a moot point now since they picked the squad and seem set on Cowan opening the batting...

You seen Doolan against spin bowling? Believe me it isn't pretty, Smith is a better player of spin bowling IMO.

Hard to judge given the lack of even decent spinners in FC cricket. Aus A v SA he scored runs. PM's XI v WI he top scored. So internation sides has done something.

In FC actually has recent hundreds unlike Smith. Smith should be in the squad instead of Maxwell but Doolan is the better bat.

Those stats honestly aren't that bad for an off spinner. Especially one who plays his majority of cricket in australia.

I would prefer Okeefe get a go at test level but considering that's unlikely Lyon is easily the best option for our spinner.

seriously??????

Smith is concentrating on his batting atm and I dont think he was selected as an all rounder.

Not being too hard on the guy but I dont think he is a test batsman either, too much of the David Hussey about him, stand and deliver type batsman with not enough footwork to have a solid test match defence.

I would say he is a 7 or there abouts which means he is an all rounder so he should bowl but he is not good enough so his selection is very puzzling for mine.

I like him in the ODI team but not the test team.

Hope I'm wrong and he cleans up.
