Orford stalked by Eels and Raiders, while Cooper and Cronk stay put

September 10, 2010

PARRAMATTA have targeted Matt Orford to play halfback while they wait for Quade Cooper or Cooper Cronk to become available - but the Eels face stiff competition from Canberra for the services of the former Manly captain.

Orford, 32, who has been playing in England, is understood to have met last week with Parramatta chief executive Paul Osborne and coach Daniel Anderson. Anderson said the Eels lacked a top-line playmaker after they bowed out of play-off contention. Eels officials made a strong bid to lure Cooper from rugby union after attempts to persuade Cronk to move north after the Storm salary-cap scandal failed, but they have again fallen short.

Cooper, the player considered most likely to help the Wallabies to World Cup success next year, is expected to announce today that he is staying in rugby union for a further two years. It is understood the opportunity of playing in a World Cup convinced Cooper to stay, and his decision was helped by the fact the Australian Rugby Union significantly increased their offer after initially being stunned by the deal tabled by Parramatta.

Cooper, who receives a total of $260,000 a year from the Queensland Reds and the ARU, is believed to be guaranteed about $600,000 under the new deal, as well as match payments for Tests and Super 15.

The deal is still short of the $3.2 million, four-year offer the Eels are believed to have been prepared to make, but if Cooper stars at the World Cup he might be even more valuable when his new two-year contract with the ARU expires in 2013.

The 22-year-old New Zealand-born five-eighth has indicated several times that he eventually wants to try his hand at league after growing up playing both codes and the Eels are likely to still be interested when he comes off contract again.

Cronk is also off contract at the Storm in 2013 and Parramatta officials are again likely to make a bid for the Melbourne halfback.

Meanwhile, the Eels believe Orford could fill the void and Osborne and Anderson met with him last week.

However, the Raiders are also keen and have been in talks with the former Manly premiership winner since learning he wanted to return from England if he can get a two-year deal in the NRL.

Orford is understood to have recently visited Canberra and toured the Raiders facilities at Bruce, where the Australian Institute of Sport is.

Sources in England say Orford was impressed by the set-up, and there is speculation he has agreed to a deal with the Raiders. But Orford remains under contract to Bradford, and the Bulls are reluctant to release him unless an NRL club is prepared to pay a transfer fee similar to the £100,000 ($166,000) they got from South Sydney for Sam Burgess.

Leeds are also seeking a £100,000 release fee for Kiwis international Greg Eastwood, who wants to return to the NRL and has been linked with Canterbury. Eastwood is good friends with Penrith second-rower turned Bulldog Frank Pritchard.

So hope he goes to Raiders. His kicking game is ordinary and he cannot even throw a spiral pass. His pass to his right side is like a hand granade.

We don't have a experienced no7 so be it. Play Murray there and in 2 years you may not want Cronk or Cooper

Yeah who would want an experienced Grand Final winning halfback who can actually organise a team around the park. Would be ridiculous IMO.

100% disagree.

He might have the shortest kicking ever - but it's still longer and better than the kicking game of our other options (Morts and Robson that's you)

He has 'proper' vision, and he knows how to direct a team around the park. Pretty handy defender too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of Murray, but I'd much rather Orford for the next 2 seasons - at least he can run the show and organise the team and LAY ON A TRY inside the opposition 20.
Oh - and he has experience in getting the ball to the fullback in space.

Be HUGE if we can get him - let's just pay the transfer fee, and give the guy a $500k contract over 2 seasons ($445k paid in 2011 and just $55k in 2012). Uses the cap space we have this season and gives us flexibility for 2012 too!

I'm 50/50 on this one, never rated Orford that highly but if he plays for us this year we are playing finals footy.

good fill-in for 2 seasons imo. some of the comments about him you'd think he can't play despite leading his team to doing what they can't do now.....win in the finals, and picking up a handy dally m award along the way

Parra doesn't really need a great halfback at the club, we just need one who can organise and get the ball to the right people and get some structure together. We have so much talent to tear apart other teams but no-one to organise the whole thing or anyone who has that vision. Orford would fit the bill easy. We may even get cut out plays going!!

Wouldn't mind seeing Orford at No.7 purely because of his organisational experience. As for the kicking in genreal play that can be left to the likes of Hayne or Burt who both have a decent boot on them.

if i'm not mistaken, i'm pretty sure smithy was very keen to get orford when he left melbourne and went to manly ... but he chose manly ..... hard to say what he'd be like now - most players who return from ESL take about 12 months to get back into NRL

Cronk won't be too old by the time we get him (if we get him). He's 26 now, he comes off contract in 2013 reportedly then he will be 29/30 when we get him. He will still have a couple good years left in him, three or four, maybe more. He is a world class halfback, I don't think age will deter him considering the way he plays.

Hear, hear!

We don't need to chase Quade Cooper with $600K+.

Hope this wasnt just made up by the paper. kind of indicates that Ando will be there next year.

Um?

It IS worth noting in the article that they explicitly mention he would earn more money with Parra!!
but seems its plenty to keep him there anyway ... they've obviously got enough money eh?

i still say he was never ever really a chance as long as the wobblies forked up soome decent cash - and that seems to be exactly what they have done .... he and his manager have done a fne job for themselves
