NRL club bosses have publicly expressed their disappointment at reports about a possible link between the late Jon Mannah's recurrence of Hodgkin's lymphoma and the supplements program at Cronulla in 2011.
The chief executives of the 16 NRL clubs issued a joint statement after their meeting in Sydney on Tuesday about approaches to Mannah's family by The Daily Telegraph and the way the paper has used privileged information contained in a leaked Sharks document to report the story.
"We recognise the rights of the media to report in the public interest but the rights of individuals also need to be respected," the statement said.
"There has been significant pain caused to the Mannah family in the way this has been addressed and the people involved must accept a level of responsibility for that pain.
"We accept that the seriousness of the ASADA inquiry ensures a high level of public scrutiny but the seriousness of it also demands a high level of responsibility.
''The way in which the Mannah family has been brought into this as a result of reporting last week is something that has disappointed every club and every player."
The decision to issue the statement, which was released to media through the NRL, has the support of the game's players, with RLPA president Clint Newton releasing a statement on their behalf last Saturday.
