NRL Statement on Shane Flanagan

The NRL today announced that it has lifted the suspension of Cronulla Sharks Head Coach Shane Flanagan.

He is free to resume coaching duties at the club immediately.

Head of Integrity, Nick Weeks said Mr Flanagan had satisfied all the conditions required to have his suspension lifted.

These included the completion of a range of training courses and demonstrating he understands the obligations of an NRL head coach.

“The NRL has been impressed with Mr Flanagan’s commitment to meeting the conditions set down for his return,” Mr Weeks said.

“Consequently his suspension is lifted and he can return to coaching duties at any time.”

Mr Flanagan said he was now better equipped and more capable of fulfilling his duties as Head Coach than ever before.

“I have a clearer understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a head coach,” he said.

“That role goes beyond player skills, tactics and game plans – I have a proactive duty to protect the welfare of players and staff and ensure we meet our governance and compliance obligations.

“I now intend to focus on the future and demonstrate that I am the right person to lead the cultural change at the Sharks.

“I am committed to restoring the reputation of the Sharks as a club that everybody in the game can be proud of.”

They've had their "show cause" notices issued, of which they had 10 days to respond, before infractions.

the "show cause" notices was from the AFL to asada claiming they were the untouchable code and asada needed to show cause why they dared to drug test them

if Essendon players get two weeks, i wonder if there will be retractions from those in the media, who called the suspensions accepted by the Sharks players, as being too lenient?

nope. it's still the nrl's fault. they were the ones who were taking people off site for jabs and waivers.

if essendon players walk away with 2 game bans, or any paltry bans, everyone involved in this "blackest day in sport" debacle should be sacked (if they've already gone they should be re-hired and sacked). they carried on like every player in every code was doping and match fixing and organised crime was involved, and if the best they can come up with is 3 game bans for one code and 2 game bans for another it shows how little they actually had. but the amount of damage to both codes implicated has been enormous, the amount of stress on players and families has been enormous and it shows asada has no f**king idea whats happening

and i'd still like to know whats happening to the alleged mastermind behind all of this.... if asada is so sure he's been doing illegal things shouldnt he be in trouble?

"You'd be surprised how much we know".

It's astounding how much they didn't know to come out with these claims.

The farce continues. Like the druggos in the Shire, the Bombers look to be getting off lightly.

So we got off lightly, I agree....but answer me this...

Hypothetically,
If the punishment we received was perfectly appropriate for the crime (12 month backdated suspensions resulting in only 3 weeks suspension for most), what should the ban be for Essendon players, considering the circumstances of their peptide use?

Based on what info has been made available to the general public, significantly more. The trouble comes in trying to compare an inadequate punishment with what no doubt will another inadequate punishment.

IMO, Again, based on on what I've read in the public arena, the Sharks players should have got 6-12 months of competition time, verses 18-24 months for the Bombers players. But that's irrelevant given the bullshit backdated ban already handed out in the NRL.
