Origin 2013 NSW side

Hayne is currently NSW most capped player for a reason. He has to be there, no questions, preferably at fullback.

The worst justification you could possibly give. Brett White, Jason King and Josh Perry also have a bunch of caps. It doesn't change the fact that they are so far from Origin standard that it isn't funny.

Hayne should be in the team but at fullback or centre, nowhere else. If you think that Hayne is a quality winger at Origin and that his defence isn't deplorable, then argue on that point. Don't use the past selections of the NSWRL as a reason for continuing them.

Yeah right, nsw have lost the last 7 years because of choosing the wrong wingers. It has nothing to do with the fact that QLD have had a far far better spine than NSW.

I recall one Origin game where Hayne jammed in too much and let in a few tries. Does that one game really undo all of the MOTM performances he's had on the wing?

I do prefer him at fullback or centre though, mainly so that he's more involved.

Certainties IMO barring injury are Morris twins, Gallen, Bird, Lewis, Tamou and Hayne.

Whether those blokes are out of form they will step up when its Origin, especially Bird.

As far as others go, I would give Carney another shot, he'll improve.

In the forwards, Tim Grant in game 2 last year proved he can step up.

Tariq Sims, who was unlucky last year, should get a mention. Also Aaron Woods.

The halfback will interesting, but it should definately not be Pearce. There's situations where we need someone to direct the traffic or put a good kick in putting on the fullback and Pearce has failed that. Maybe someone like Adam Reynolds.

Williams would be a good impact player, just needs to run out wide a bit.

Obviously not because from my statement I clearly believe that Hayne has had more than one bad game defensively.

Game 3 this year was very poor. He let Boyd get outside him a number of times and it was very costly for NSW. Even earlier in the series when he defended well by his standards, his defence was still a rather sketchy. He found himself very far in on a number of occasions in Game 1, which led to Tate's first break. Then in both Game 1 and 2 he rushed in unnecessarily to hit Hodges a couple of times and was only saved because Hodges didn't move the ball out quickly. Game 1 and 2 this year were the best I've seen him defend in a while and even then the standard was passable at best. While Game 3 was really poor.

Game 1 of 2010 was a perfect example of him rushing in when he committed to Inglis and let Boyd cross the line. Game 1 of 2009 was another game where his defence was all over the shop. He rushed in 5-6 times when he shouldn't have and was lucky that Queensland didn't punish him as badly as they should have. Even in Game 2 he was very poor defensively and he can be thankful that Slater can't pass left to right otherwise the scoreline could have been 30-10.

His defence is poor but it is something that slips people's attention unless it directly costs NSW a try. Hayne's play in attack has been marvellous and often (such as in 2009) he has been the only thing going for NSW but his defence undoes a lot of the good that he brings to the team.

We got a fair bit of depth to choose from and the gap between us and the QLD side is certainly closing. Origin was a real nail-biter last year it was a great series albeit a few big ref calls.

I think we have to look at our spine personally, I think it's an area that we aren't the strongest in and haven't been since the days of Johns, Pre-Injury Mini.etc and while we probably won't have a sine like that for a long time, if ever again we certainly need an improvement on what we have now. (As already mentioned several times in this thread).

Personally, I think we will have our certainties like aways; Gallen, Bird, Lewis. I think we can add Tamou there as he will be shaped to be a part of the team for many years. Personally, I was not impressed by GStewart and I would not have him in the side again.

I'd be keeping my eye on Mateo though, the guy can be deadly with the ball in hand due to his quick off-loads and can bend the line quite easy, however he often forces a few errors. Which is costly at Origin level.

I think having two home games this year though will certainly help us.

Yeah, he has a defensive lapse every now and then. If we sacked every NSW player that had let in a try over the last 7 series we wouldnt be able to field a team. Hayne is the best back in NSW. He will be there.

I think Stewart was used poorly. He defended well but did little in attack. If Daley wants to use a similar plan to Stuart then I agree that Stewart should not be there. If however, he changes the plan to try to give Stewart more space then he could do well. The centre just needs to know what's happening. Stewart would drift wide and cramp the attack whereas the centre could have come around the back in down the inside as Lyon often does which would mean they are coming through the gap that is created in the sliding defense. This was a problem that Gasnier had when playing outside Stewart. Not a fault of Gasnier or Morris but a problem with the coaching to not use this play.

Yeah, he has a defensive lapse every now and then.

Yes, a couple major defensive lapses that have resulted in quite a few tries being scored. Basically every series he has played in he has conceded a try that would not have been scored if he had defended properly.

I don't see how you can be so cavalier about that.

If we sacked every NSW player that had let in a try over the last 7 series we wouldnt be able to field a team.

Yes but Hayne's problem isn't that he has let in one try, it is multiple tries and plenty of other opportunities where a try could have been scored. Even with the host of sub-standard players selected there aren't many who have such a consistently poor record in defence.

Occasional c**k-ups are forgivable, consistently doing so isn't.

Hayne is the best back in NSW. He will be there.

This was never in question.

You raise a good point, I actually didn't look at it that way. I'm pretty sure we will see our halves pairing be Jennings, JMoz, Hayne or something among them. Jennings has been quite strong at Origin level personally and hopefully it's only improvement for him. Josh I rate but it depends where Hayne is played. If they can be coached and go through plays that better suit GStewart then I might re-consider his role. I wonder what Daley will do though.

Thing is, we're not short on back rowers. Lewis, Watmough, Bird, Stewart, Williams, Simms and Gallen can all hold their own at origin level so if they are not confident they can get the best out of Stewart then leave him out but make sure there is someone that can defend as strongly (that really just rules out Williams) in his place.

I honestly dont think his game translates too well to Origin. Ball playing backrowers dont get much chance to shine when the emphasis is on smashing the ball up the middle, which is how NSW have played for a few years now.

Dunno, maybe it is just coaching

The opportunity was created a few times with Gasnier but he seemed to just miss his opportunity although he knew it was there or he ran the wrong line. You might be right, as I said, unless they are confident they can make it work, just go with Lewis or Bird.

I agree. I don't think Stewart's game translates to Origin very well at all.

At club level he is an excellent backrower but he relies a lot on individual skill rather than necessarily working well within a team, whereas at Origin he isn't more talented than his opposition so he can't just get by with fancy footwork or exploiting weaker defenders. The problem is that his game is a bit limited. He is a ball playing backrower but he only really has a short passing game and some nice footwork. His long-passing game is largely absent and he doesn't carry the ball strongly or hit holes well. Compared to other ball-playing forwards like Bird and Lewis he doesn't have other qualities to work on, such as a strong carry, hitting holes or running good lines. So when he isn't given the time and space with the ball he becomes quite ineffective.

The last time I remember Stewart actually being really effective at rep level was in the 2008 World Cup. And even there the quality of the competition was pretty low (certainly a lot lower than Origin) and despite working well with the ball, his defence through the entire tournament was horrendous.

My thoughts coming out of the trials and the All Star game on the weekend

- From all reports Tariq Sims had a very good run and looks confident. He'd be on my bench if he is fit and firing this year.

- Willie Mason looks to be in the best shape of his career and played very strong in what was an underwhelming All Stars pack. I think he is a huge chance for a NSW bench spot and personally Id love to see him there.

- Glenn Stewart will be out for 8-10 with a knee injury so Id be surprised if he'll get enough footy under his belt to be in contention. Most here were questioning his worth to the side anyway.

- Adam Reynolds is not ready. The All Stars match was his chance to step it up a gear and make the selectors pencil him in for consideration but he flinched.

- Jarryd Hayne has got to be put at fullback. He was pretty lax in the All Stars side, especially that non-committed defence at the end, but he showed some great signs when he actually decided to take things seriously. I like Brett Stewart but he just doesnt offer the speed, power and passing skills that Jarryd brings.

- The Morris bros have to be together on the left. They worked so well as a unit and their defence was solid as a rock. The All Stars outside backs had little opportunity to shine in attack due to the woeful performance of their halves but those 2 looked good with the few opportunities that were thrown their way. I really liked Josh's kick chases.

Completely agree re. Mason JW, would love to see the big unit back in a sky blue jersey. He's been terrific

We're absolutely f**ked for halves, yet again. Reynolds isn't the messiah everyone is making him out to be. He was a very tiny cog of a talented machine last year... and his stats were nothing to write home about. Certainly isn't origin calibre at the moment, and may never be.

May as well just go with Carney and Pearce again. As incompetent as they were, NSW still went very close to winning the series last year. That means Hayne has be picked at fullback because Farah shouldn't have to do all the creating himself. Hayne's the best ball-playing fullback in the NRL, without a doubt.
