re Hayne, he has been most threatening for NSW on the left wing. whether it's his combination with Pearce, Bird & Jennings, or his pure acceleration and ability to take advantage of the bird offload (jennings has done well from this too) from second phase play to dominate his opponent, well i'm still unsure. but it is undeniable that he is much more threatening in this role when all of bird, pearce & jennings play then he was at fullback. in fact, he was largely ineffective, as stewart is, at fullback because the QLD kick chase is so disciplined and strong.
game won't be won in the backs though. it's going to be won with the middle rotation. more than who is FB. more than who is the halves combo, daley needs to get this right. it is where QLD have eventually got on top in recent seasons. Stuart got it wrong with Gallen playing 80 mins as a prop and substituting Tamou with Creagh or Watmough. NSW need to be winning this area of the game between the 50-70 min mark. It's imperative that Tamou is on the field after a spell here and another prop who is going to be fresh, effective and break the line and keep the NSW advance rolling forward. It can't be Gallen. It can't be Merrin. It can't be Watmough. They can't all even be in the same squad - they are all middle backrowers now. Sure have Gallen on the field as the middle backrower, but two front line NSW props need to be in the mix and taking hit ups in every set at this stage. Gallen can't be hogging two hitups in every set during this period, just bouncing off players and running sideways and not getting the QLD props back peddling.
Get them going backwards in the middle, and it will allow the NSW outside weapons to take on the line on the hop just like Petero, Hannant, Shillo & Scott have allowed Cronk and Thurston to do at the 50-70 min stage in years past.
