Why is Kurt Gidley seen as such a good player? Sure, he's fairly solid, but nothing more than that. When Craig Bellamy was NSW coach, he seemed intent on making Gidley fullback and captain, when his performances seemed to suggest he deserved otherwise. He's nothing more than a decent bench utility.
I think the reason he was so underwhelming in the Bellamy days was because he had too much pressure placed on him. As the utility, he has so much less to do, which is what he should be comfortable with.
I like to think of Gidley is like ... well like a dummy for a baby dressed in blue - he soothes NSW supporters as they cry about never winning a series. Stick Gidley in the team and they'll feel better.
That's because he's kinda like a poor man's Andrew Johns: He comes from Newcastle, kicks goals, sometimes plays hooker and sometimes kicks goals. The closest thing to Johns in today's game.
So, NSW can watch Gidley play, and sucking on the memories of the good old days when NSW won series when Andrew Johns (who we all know was the most amazing player in the world and his legend grows every hour after his retirement) last played.
Unfortunately the dummy doesn't fix the problem. And we still have to listen to the crying.
