It is in the kiwis hands to try and raise the importance of the international game
What more can the kiwis do? Compare that with what Australia could do.

NZers always whinge about losing players to Australia/Origin but never do anything about it. Ie set up our own version.
Why would we want to setup our 'own' origin. It is a concept that does not translate to NZ.

Each to their own mate, personally I find the under 20s shit and would love to see that replaced with reserve grade

The more league the better for me. It is in the kiwis hands to try and raise the importance of the international game with more consistent efforts, the 2 tournament wins are a great start, but it also kinda hides the fact that those are the only 2 wins we have v Australia since 2005

Next year could be an interesting year for the kiwis, if SBW returns to league and straight back into the kiwis it may draw a lot of people in but will also turn a lot of people off

Agree with you on reserve grade, would much rather watch that than Under 20's.

3 wins in 6 tourneys isn't a bad effort at all really (1 lost in Golden point too), it is just the one off Tests that kill us and get the media and average Aussie fan talking shit about us. Thats why they need to get rid of them and replace them with a series imo.

Origin has grown into an institution and there's no turning back now. Sorry but it's the pinnacle of league, nothing fiercer, nothing means more (for Qld'ers anyway). It might hurt Kiwi pride but for the average Qld'er and NSWelshman test football comes in a distant third to SOO and then club football.

I think a lot of you Origin knockers don't live over here, it's over-the-top hype of course (when is Nine ever not?) but Origin night is a big 'un and it's time to get busy!

Don't forget the very real boost to RL in NZ when Origin was broadcast live by TVNZ in the late '80s (pre-pay TV).

Remember the 'Origin' tri-series in the Superleague era? NZ v Qld v NSW? We were robbed of a place in the final, due to a blatant refereeing decision when Sean Hoppe scored the winning try v NSW. For the Superleague marketeers, the thought of a final without both NSW and Qld was unfathomable. They fixed it.

So why did they have NZ there in the first place? Did they think we would'nt make the final? With Australia split into two? Probably.

I'm not sure I can be bothered getting into more origin related arguements but how can it ever be called the pinnacle when the game/series excludes quite a few of the best players in the world? I'd say a good 10. And its not like you have to beat out the best players in your position to gain a spot in the side.

And the hype around it is what almost ruins it for me. I watch the games because they are usually pretty entertaining but the over the top of the hype and wanking on about origin moments is ridiculous.

The greatest moment in origin history is when Ben Creagh ran away from Justin Hodges, that was an origin moment!

Because we're losing players to Origin, and therefore our country. I'm not saying it's North v South necessarily but we need to be more proactive than just 'gee, where's their patriotism'. And for me, when you're using Tony Kemp as your bargaining tool, you're going wrong for a start.

I'm surprised an Origin hasn't made its way over here. Instead they send it to Melbourne where 9/10ths of the people don't give a shite.

I'm well aware that this involves probably quite a few of you on here but as I posted this in another thread

Why are NZers 'staunch/diehard/loyal' supporters of either Origin side? You are a staunch supporter of repersentive side repersenting an Australian state. I have never understood the New Zealanders who claim to be huge passionate loyal fans of either SOO team. Makes zero sense unless you have some sort of real affintity with the state such as being born there or having lived there for many years, I can understand choosing a team you want to win to make the series more interesting but diehard staunch fan? Annoys that when Origin comes round people get into it more and voice their support for their 'team' more they do when they Kiwis are playing. Whats wrong with watching it for what it is, a game between two Australian repersentive sides.

I'm over Origin. I used to watch it religiously and be hardcore for Queensland. I loved the era of Mark Coyne, Mel Meninga, Steve Renouf, Dale Shearer, Boxhead Walters, Gary Larson. They fought like gladiators. It was mate against mate, state against state, blokes absolutely wanting to tear each other a new A-hole. Hard to argue against seeing a bunch of Australians want to rip each other apart.

Not a fan anymore. I lost my desire for it when Queensland went for Ben Te'o as the 18th man a couple of years ago. That was after the Inglis fiasco. It became fairly clear to me that the day of hard nosed blokes like Bobby Lindner who were born and bred to smash the other state were over. Now its state of selection... who can I get the best pay-cheque from, its a blight on international football as well. Its just not the same anymore.

Any excuse to post that gif is worth taking.

Edit: It's irrelevant but here's another of my favourites...

I'd love both to be strong and compliment each other somehow, how I don't know but I don't think it has to come at the expense of 1 or the other.
The atmosphere at an origin game is immense. Have only been to 1 at suncorp but it was a great night.

Good to have a decent debate going without things getting personal and abusive as well lol

Just my selfish opinion.

I want Warriors players to concentrate on NRL. Origin & Tests are a distraction and a source of injury and fatigue.

A Grand Final winners ring lasts forever and outweighs either an Origin Series win or even a World Cup win.

Let's concentrate on a Grand Final.

The good thing is that not too many Warriors players get selected for SOO, the distraction is usually pretty minimal down here.

Great thread.
Personally I like watching Origin, as, at its core, it's a series of three high quality games of rugby league played by some of (certainly not all of) the best players in the world.
But that's it. I like watching a good NRL matchup between two quality sides too, because I love watching rugby league. I don't like the hype and I certainly don't favour either side and I too find it absurd how passionate NZ league fans get over either QLD or NSW, especially those either rubbish or couldn't give a sh*t about the Kiwis or Warriors.
Kiwis vs Kangaroos is the pinnacle of rugby league in my opinion, regardless of bias. The quality of play is comparable but the passion on the field is exceeded (specifically these days) by the test match. Origin at its peak was arguably a much better spectacle than NZ vs Aus but it has descended rather rapidly in the last decade or so with Queensland's dominance and increasing dodgy selections.

Thats the attitude that made the AFL a dominant world sport with such rich player opportunities beyond club football.

:lol::lol: since most Australians rubbish the international game and don't care about any rep football beyond an interstate game played in one country I think that's pretty damn rich.

Me and you are on exactly the same page on this one.
