OT: Association Football

The Irish certainly dominated possession and field position in the last 15 enough to win the game 5 times.
Field position isn't really a thing in Soccer. A team leading 1-0 will always sit back and play on the break as the clock runs down. It was inevitable that Ireland would have the ball in the Aussie half for most of the last 15. The equivalent in RL is shifting the ball and keeping it alive deep in your own half.

Ease up mate... Some of the posters here barely know anything about rugby league despite being mods in the LU forum.... I wouldn't expect them to be totally across the finer points of football after only getting an Optus Sports subscription on the morning of yesterday's match....

It might not be the most 2023 thing to say but I somewhat prefer women’s football to men’s because they just aren’t as skilful. The vast majority of soccer games are as boring as Dragons vs Tigers but at least with women’s the higher number of errors creates excitement. Also because of the errors and less physicality/ability to kick long, womens tend to play more direct so there’s usually a heap more one on ones
Like how women’s tennis is more interesting than men’s tennis?

Fair enough. I’m going to take that on board and learn.

TBH though, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me as all it did was offer Ireland continuous opportunities to level the score. What’s smart about that ?

Those opportunities were low quality though, compared to if they could win the ball back in their own half and then push it forward on the break against f**k all defenders.

The Irish completely outplayed us tactically last night. That is a worry.
They sat back and repelled every attacking opportunity we threw at them for the first 70 minutes, waited for us to tire and then because they hadn't done the running we had, they had the energy to throw everything at us in the last 20 minutes. It just didn't work for them in the end because our defence was resolute and their shooting was a bit off target.
We were lucky to receive the penalty which gave us that victory.

A cracking start to the World Cup last night and great to see the Kiwi's get a win against all odds.
There is no sport like football.

For those questioning the quality, stick to following League.
Yes, it was frustrating to watch at times, but it is what it is, and Woman's football is actually an incredibly high standard. It just might not always be Ange-ball.

Keeping more players behind the ball in Soccer is like a League team executing low-risk set completions. Conversely, a Soccer team pressing upfield is like shifting and offloading from deep in RL.

I would argue that, due to the interplay between possession and field position, risk-calibration is more nuanced in RL than either Soccer or RU both of which have no inbuilt limit on possession. The only comparable code to RL in this respect is NFL.

The main reason this isn't widely recognized is that fans and critics alike are determined to see RL as simple.

Warriors/Raiders today was a good example of a game which featured minimal razzle-dazzle but was still strategically fascinating and exciting. A Soccer or RU game of similar quality would have bored me to tears.

I liked the way Japan played. Japan prolly won’t win because they won’t put their shoulders into the game, but I like the cut of their jib nonetheless.
