Washington (CNN)House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's Democrats are injecting an urgent new argument into their already fast-moving impeachment drive: President Donald Trump poses such a flagrant threat to American governance and democracy that there is no time to waste.

"If we allow a President to be above the law, we do so surely at the peril of our republic," Pelosi said in a televised address on Thursday morning.

"Today, I am asking our chairman to proceed with articles of impeachment," Pelosi said. "The President leaves us no choice but to act because he is trying to corrupt once again the election for his own benefit."

Remember that the purpose of impeachment is not necessarily to remove someone (Judge, Civil Servant or even POTUS), but for congress to pull them into line if they are not complying with their constitution.

Trump of course has adopted a "bring it on" angle because whilst he may well be impeached in the lower house, they cannot remove him from office unless it passes the senate where he has the numbers. I think this is how it works.

So I am guessing that the democrats want this mud to stick leading into the 2020 election and Trump wants this process to grant him a besieged underdog status.

There are currently 151 members of the House of Representatives, each representing one geographic area of Australia. Members are elected for a 3 year term and when in parliament take part in debate on proposed laws and public policy, representing the views of the people in their electorate.

Except there's nearly a dozen merkins up for election in every electorate. I suppose you could say most of those aren't career politicians.

But the point is politics is a contest and Trump won, no different to charismatic statesmen like Obama and Hilary Clinton's husband.
