Agree with the flip-flopping. They are for/against Adani, coal mining etc depending on what state they are in and if there is a By-Election. They have gone away from Labor’s traditional fanbase, at times seek to appeal to progressives, yet ignore Labor’s long-term mission to improve the lives of the working class. These days Labor is seen as a party for the well-to-do virtue signallers rather than a party of character and substance.
100%

They are just in the popularity contest ..... what they overlook is that the "mainstream popularity" isn't always what "reality" is - so flip flopping around will come back to bite you

They tried to go with a likeable leader (Who doesn't think Albo is a nice fella? .... and Shorten is just a knob) - but at the end of the day they need to back it up with some substance instead of just hitching your wagon to the latest socially popular opinion.

Two words: Penny Wong. A lady of conviction and tough enough to withstand a federal election. Can a senator become PM ?

I think it needs to be someone from the right of the party. She’s fail for the same reasons that Albo will.
I think she has tended to embody the perception of them chasing the popular social issues - and that might just be cos she is the one with the balls to stand and say something meaningful publicly ..... so whether she is good or not might even come to the fore

gay, female, climate activist .... make her black and she nearly has a full house (she's not a whitey so maybe that counts)

Both major parties have screwed the working class over. Traditional jobs gone and all they have to show for it is higher house prices.
I don't know how a gay, malaysian-chinese background, climate activist will connect with traditional aussie households.

I can just imagine the headlines - First it was the land, now our 2nd biggest political party is up for sale to the Choinuese!

They all miss the mark. The vast majority of level-headed aussies only ask for a fair deal when it comes to politics. That means, what the political decisions made in Canberra and the states will end up having on their lives. I personally don't care if the party leader is gay, green, kalathumpian or a pink moon enthusiast. Just don't let all that get in the way of listening to what the majority want for Australia going forward.

To me it feels like if you work hard and apply yourself and end up with a lot of $$ you are a capitalist and greedy which is an un cool way to live. And that's your Liberal voter. Or a gay hating hick.
Labor seems to push this agenda that if your on their side your about equality, a good person, care about the environment, caring and thoughtful individual that isn't worried about money.

Unsure most voters know f**k all about policies or how each government would effect the way they live.

You've obv not seen the comments in A Current Affair videos on fb. My local fb group for 2120 had to post a warning following Covid-19 to stop posting racist stuff against Chinese community.

I'm not saying everyone is a racist in Australia, I'm just saying there's enough to stop politicians like Wong from becoming a PM.

Pleasing the majority is why we have gotten into this mess in the first place.

No-one has the courage to drive potentially unpopular but necessary agendas. Long-term strategies and plans are avoided as well because everyone expects instant gratification.

You only have to see how the LNP did a massive backflip after pressure from the fossil fuel industry. After all, they were the first to introduce an emissions trading scheme (ETS).

Interesting now that there is talk of introducing a tarrif on EVs and today there is speculation that those with rooftop solar will be slugged. Joke.

The idea that the fossil fuel industry can heavily lobby Government and get whatever they want is overstated. There are green lobbyists that are just as powerful (if not more so).

I'd say any 'flip flop' was recognition that regional voters who are dependent on jobs from the mining sector will crucify them in an election. Remember what happened to Bill at the last federal election?

The biggest backflip I have seen on mining is from the current QLD labor party. That was entirely driven by polling concerns. I watched years of lobbying fall on deaf ears.

Shorten proposed to make the hard decisions (as championed by you ^^^) and underestimated the wrath of the blue collar workers. It was telling when my MIL said that she voted LNP for the first time because Shorten was going to tax pensioners (she was referring to franking credits even though she owned no shares). A poorly run election by a guy who's popularity was already questionable.

Yeah. He illustrates my point well. He went to the election with too many ideas and policies when he could have just relied on LNP being even more popular than he was.

Poor campaign, but also a sad indictment on modern politics.
