So, Alex Glassons is shutting down Opal Card readers during peak hour from 4 - 7 pm every weekday starting tomorrow. It will cost all of us 10's of millions of $$.
Is this even legal for a union to deny the State Govt owned infrastructure income?
I'm glad the Libs are taking legal action for future loss of income. This is taxpayers money that the union is extorting from the NSW Govt for their own political gain. It's a f**king joke.
Glassons and his union buddies are becoming beyond a joke and the media really need to start calling them out for their agenda. It has nothing to do with train safety, it's about getting Labor back into power, and keeping unnecessary guards in jobs.
With Labor's record on infrastructure expenditure, well, f**k that.

Has anyone ever travelled on the London tube or the Paris metro? No guards on those systems.
Why do we need them in Sydney, particularly on the new NIF's that have all the safety systems built into the trains - even better the the V - Sets that do the Inter-City runs at the moment.
This campaign by the union is a f**king disgrace.

They made threats if they don't shut OPAL cards they'd instead only use Aussie made trains which will effect public even more by less services.
Seems to be getting ugly but I doubt they'll cave.

As far as gaurds go I think we should have them after a certain time. It makes people feel safe and deters trouble. Think of females especialy

I don't know if guards leave their enclosure if shit goes down - think they just call the cops - only so much they could do if something bad went down - someone will still be watching security cams

I kinda feel sorry for people who are losing jobs to the new world of peopleless everything .... why can't we have people doing such jobs? I think a guard on a train is a good idea

having said that, I think unions are more often than not, self serving crap who pick and choose their battles based on what suits the union

The ironic thing about that is, it was the last Labor govt that initially ordered and procured overseas built trains.
Fact.
It is some of these same trains they are boycotting if the opal card shut down does not work and go to plan for them. Hypocritical much?

We currently have several billion dollars' worth of a state of the art new Inter Unban fleet of trains sitting in storage because of this innate industrial action, of which there is no justification for, except the unions claims that they are not safe (which they are). They are more than safe. Except, as far as they claim, they don't have a guard who does f**k all anyway on a train. Guards are old school.
If security on trains is an issue, hire security guards. A guard sitting in his little cabin at the back of a train blowing his whistle every time a train needs to leave a station will do f**k all anyway.

Sorry. When you said gaurd I assumed at the train station some sort of security. But you are right. Security cameras everywhere would be a huge deterent.
It's sad to see jobs become obsolete but it’s evolution. Think of those back breaking physical jobs that are less and less due to machinery. As someone who works for themself I understand the ruthless nature of work. And seeing people you've helped give work when slow come back to stab you in the back once they got a chance for the dollar.

Wasn't going to derail any other threads.

But after listening on the news the past few days about sporting sponsorships getting attention about climate change and pressure on bodies or clubs to remove certain ones.

Does the Major sponsor on the jersey really affect your love for the club. I have never been too concerned about it.

Maybe I am too naive about this and should be worried more about the future but it's never concerned or interested me.

Our most famous jersey in the 80s have James Hardie on it. And it's not like they haven't had there issues in the past 30 years.

Maybe if f**kstick Perrottet doesn't push on with his crazy plan to raise the height of the Warragamba Dam wall, then the savings would offset any losses from the afternoon Opal gate takings - meaning this industrial action wouldn't cost "all of us" anything at all?

Most of the driverless, peopleless technology shit is a furphy and poorly labelled. Still need people to supervise shit and make sure the machines dont take over.

Yeah because storing more water for a growing population is "crazy".

Well I helped set up Tooheys automated plant for loading trucks.
They eliminated 40 forklift drivers that where operating on a 24hr x 7 days shift. Literally these set ups will go and pick and pack a semi trailer with cartons of beer. They now will just have 2 forklift drivers so do small order for the small trucks.
So yes someone still operates the orders but you have taken out maybe 30 workers and 12 forklifts etc.
Savings are huge not paying guys night shift and weekend rates etc.

Yes. You have to look at what costs are biggest. Right now id say transport. That's why so much moneys getting poured into driverless trucks. I know quite a few truck drivers that make over 150k a year. Add in super and insurance etc and they are costing a company close to 200k a year. That's a lot of money to be saved.

The current drivers have skills that are easily transferrable, but yes not every child will get a prize. Particularly those unwilling to move with the times.

Pauline was in court yesterday. She did fine and successfully defended the vexatious action. Phew. Well done Pauline, great result.
