OT: Tim Smith MOTM Performance for Wigan 1sts

The Canberra Raiders say they are keen to move on with Joel Thompson's rugby league career now an assault charge against him has been dropped.

The 21-year-old forward was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm after it was alleged he hit his girlfriend during an argument in January.

Thompson returned to training in February after entering a plea of not guilty.

The case was due to be heard in the ACT Magistrates Court later this month where Raiders chief executive Don Furner was to be called to give evidence.

But the Director of Public Prosecutions has now formally dropped the charge.

A spokesman for the Raiders says the club is glad the matter has been dealt with and is satisfied with the decision.

Good to hear PP, you stated on a few occations that he was not guilty and for his sake I am glad the justice system has work for him.

Thanks Caylo. The fact that the charges were dropped by the DPP was a relief for both Joel and his family, as it saved the trauma of a court hearing where the true facts would have been given an airing.

Tim has signed to play for brisbane easts next season so he is also able to be chosen for the broncs if need be.How is it they can pluck players from that comp if the need arises?other clubs cant do that at will ?

Joel had no case to answer. The DPP DROPPED the charges, not the complainant..Said he had NO CASE to answer...

You can think what you like about OJ. He had his case heard by a trial and jury and was found not guilty.
His charges were contested, NOT DROPPED by the prosecutor.

Mate obviously some people get off that shouldnt and some dont get off that should, but he was found to have no case to answer and often high profile people are trialled my media and it makes the situation alot harder.
The only people that know truly what happen is the accused and the accuser and you should leave those sort of comments out. Just because this is a forum i doesnt mean common courtesy should not apply (Give yourself an uppercut mate).

One of my best mates is doing law atm, little technicalities such as obtaining evidence which could very well lead to someones guilt, not obtained in the legal way ( warrant or permit to search and obtain) ( 5.32pm obtained when the timeframe may have finished at for the search finishes at 5pm) means that the evidence is not allowed to proscecute that person in question - hence he gets off.

I have my doubts, why were the charges laid in the first place? and who was the person that made the claims?

I no Todd Carney too Pete, awesome bloke, good mother, however i've also seen him drunk and act like an idiot on a few occasions....

Ron they have those rules for a reason, if they didnt police would be free to essentially raid your personal life without sufficent reasoning. The charges were dropped meaning there was no sufficent evidence to lay charges or take the charges to court (depending on if he had be charged or was just being investigated). If evidence has been obtain unlawfully, normally this evidence will be argued in court (which this case didnt get to) and has to be thrown out by a judge (which is obviously not the case).

Lots of people get off on technicalities but alot more get off because their innocent so it becomes a futile agrument

I agree, the law works both ways in that regard.

Just one question though ( last one, as i couldn't be f**ked arguing over something i really couldn't care about) do you think the Bulldogs were all innocent in Coffs Harbour? lack of evidence was also the reason..and if Brett Stewart gets of because no witnesses etc, would you also believe he's totally innocent?

I know the story re Joel. I was ALWAYS confident that he would not have a case to answer.
The DPP would not have dropped the case IF they thought differently, especially in light of other 'misdemeanors' happening in Rugby League circles this season.
Anyway debating it will achieve nothing. It's over, and the boy will kick on in 2010 after getting his chance in a few games at the end of 2009.
As I have posted, good kid, good player and the Raiders will be able to build a good team around him and blokes like Wadell, Vidot, Dugan, Croker, and Carney.
From what I have heard, Mick Monaghan is a chance to return, and Kev Kingston is in their sights as well.

Brisbane Broncos a step closer to snaring wayward star Tim Smith

October 13, 2009 Troubled playmaker Tim Smith is a step closer to relaunching his NRL career with Broncos Broncos after Queensland Cup affiliate side Easts Tigers nominated the former Parramatta halfback to complete the pre-season with Brisbane's elite squad.
Smith left the Eels mid-season last year after a string of alcohol-related off-field incidents and revelations he was battling bipolar disorder.

After taking some time out with his family on the Gold Coast, Smith took up a deal to join the Wigan Warriors in the English Super League.

He played 12 games for the Warriors at five-eighth this year before a shoulder injury ended his campaign and he returned to Australia.

While the Broncos played no direct role in his recruitment, under their affiliate arrangement with Easts, they invited the Tigers to put forward a player to undertake the pre-season with the NRL squad. Smith has been the player nominated for this summer.

It was through the same link that winger Antonio Winterstein was elevated to the full-time squad after he was signed by Easts from Sydney Roosters. He went on to play every game for the Broncos this year.

While Peter Wallace is Brisbane's first-choice halfback and under-20s No. 7 Ben Hunt is considered a player of the future, the lack of another halfback option on the roster was exposed when Wallace was injured before the preliminary final loss to Melbourne Storm last month and veteran Tonie Carroll was pushed to the halves.

Wallace is recovering from a broken ankle and will face a race against the clock to be ready for pre-season trials in February - which could present an opportunity for Smith to show his wares.
The Broncos are finalising their training squad for the pre-season, with up to seven members of the under-20s side to be elevated to the senior squad.

Of the other members of this year's elite squad, Tom Hewitt and Aaron Gorrell will join high-profile duo Karmichael Hunt and Dave Taylor in the departure lounge, while Palmer Wapau will not have a Broncos contract but will remain with feeder side Redcliffe.

The Broncos have also moved to bolster their forward stocks, signing North St Josephs product Rohan Ahern from the Roosters and Canberra under-20s prop Matt Britt.

Ahern played four first-grade games for the Roosters this season.

Good on him, it will help Tim make the most of his chance with Easts Tigers (he should really be a standout at that level, anything less is a worry), and perhaps for him to be game ready to step up for Broncos/NRL level if Wallace gets an injury during the season.

I'm glad it's not with Wenty/Parra, as Tim has been smart in looking forwards not backwards, and basing himself somewhere close to the support of his relatives for when the inevitable spotlight (as demonstarted by this article) comes.

Good onya Smithy....Good luck, I hope you make it to first grade with the Broncos, especially around the time they come up against Parra. Make sure you put an X on your chest for Fuifui to run at...that is if he can get that wide in his running.
Put a 'clicker' on the turnstile so the Broncos can check out your numbers, and I hope your running metres during the season add up to a 'length of the field' run.
Good luck..I mean it...you will need it. If you can cut it in the ESL, you can cut it anywhere...Oh, hang on!!!
