My vote is Ben Creagh.

In the circus surrounding the disappointing choices of coach and squad during the years 2012-2015, I think people often overlook what a terrible captain Ben Creagh was for the team. I can't see why he is absolved of responsibility, when he gave such weak leadership, particularly to the forward pack.

I would go as far as to say that the losing culture that Creagh bought to the team continues to have an influence. And it's only this past year that we finally fully threw off the weak mentality that he instilled in our forwards.

Harsh but spot on.

Paul McGregor..leadership and the 2nd half fade out..costing us the GF in 99, who else could it be, it followed him into his coaching :)...jokes aside...I thought I would try and lighten this dark thread

In reality this a tough thread to judge and unfair
Ben Creagh's record would not be good but he was surrounded by a bunch of nuffies from recruitment, coach and squad
But Barrett who was good player individually but for me not a great leader with a good side
Some will say Widdop but he has grown into the role and he did it on his own including playing until he improved this year with a better squad around him..before injury and the hair colour change...that fooked him.
So for me in recent memory..Barrett,
Pre merger while I have been supporting them and going to games since early-mid 70's..no one. We always had inspirational captains.

What a load of crap. He was undermined by the Bennett hangover, Management, Steve friggin Price and Dean Young and his dad. You can't blame Ben for any of that.

Yikes - that is like enjoying a simply delicious and delectable meal with a fine wine and then complaining about it once you have received the bill . Really couldn’t care about his captaincy one way or the other , we had a tremendous player for many years in Ben Creagh and we all enjoyed his performances.

That's the thing though. We apportion blame (rightly so in my opinion) to all of the people that you've listed, and then give Creagh a pass. Surely he also bears some responsibility.

Creagh was a great club man and leader. He was given the captaincy as a result of those traits.

he was never an " in your face", eg. C Smith style Captain. After the Bennett era, who else would / should have taken the Captaincy? Did his best under a poor coach and a club rebuilding after 3 years of dominance.

He was rewarded with the Captaincy as a result of his work ethic and leadership qualities. Right man, wrong time.

McGregor .......Oh, sorry, thought you said, worse coach!

Worse captain?
Ben Creagh was one if our greatest club players but lacked the attributes to captain..... too soft l'd say but not sure whether he's our worse. That would be a tad harsh.

Only thing I remember about Creagh was he was the first to bail ship, State of Origin Justin Hodges comes to mind. No team mate could trust him to lead the way after that.

I'll happily admit that this is an off season thread designed to stir up people. But club legend? Please.

270 games for the Red V.

Played for Australia and 11 games in SOO.

Second most capped player in the clubs history with 270 first grade games, behind Ben Hornby who played in 273 games.

"
Creagh capped a memorable 2010 by winning the 2010 NRL Grand Final, making more metres than any forward on the park; 149 metres.[11] In the annual club awards night, Creagh was named Dragons Player of the Year. This was the third time he had received the award. " ... source wiki.

f**k yeah,,, Club legend.

Plllllease.
