It's actually illegal. Ethics are up to interpretation.

I'm wondering why the media haven't mentioned it. There's been at least 3 different responses saying this and that's just fans.

If the Panthers have offered Ivan Cleary a contract to coach the Panthers next year, despite having 2 years to run at the Tigers, how is this legal when you are not allowed to make an unsolicited offer to a player until they are in the final 12 months of their contract? Why is there this inconsistency with coaches?

Our CEO said no offer was made.

That is a shrewd observation. Reckon Pascoe is smart enough to think of that?

Problem is Ivan has complete control of the footy dept at the tigers...

Don't know but you'd think Tigers would have a strong position in any negotiations.

Maybe Gus should have thought of that b4 he fired Ivan the first time.....

Yep

Ha ha. Yeah genuine right? Just admit Gus f**ked up and is blowing a shitload of unnecessary cash to poach Ivan back cause he had no idea his son would be such a good player when he fired daddy 3 years ago.

Spin it anyway u want, Gus looks f**king stupid and Panthers fans should be calling for the fat ginger merkins head...

How is that spin? We want a real interview process this time and I said we all hated the process or lack of when he dumped Ivan and hired Griffin.

At the moment I understand there are no anti poaching laws in NRL about coaches.

There isn't which the NRL SHOULD change.

The one thing for certain now, is Cleary can not be a effective coach at the Tigers. Once you lose trust within a club it’s curtains.

The Tigers must now broker a very good financial settlement and move on as quickly as possible.

From a fans point of view it saddens me that Cleary’s selfishness is going to set our club back to square one and play havoc with our recruitment plans and I guess there must be question marks over all our playing roster now.

I don’t blame Penrith, they just offered him a deal, a man of integrity would have politely declined as he was holding a binding contract elsewhere and still had unfinished businesses.

Let's just wait and see what happens today. Ivan needs to put all of this speculation to bed by fronting-up to the media and making a statement.

Well according to NRL 360 we wanted him for when his contract was finished and he wanted 2019.

This is an elaborate revenge plot. Clearly clan is about to destroy Gould by pretending to play along with his game. Nathan joining the tigers to be with his dad. Gould to get his cumuppenance. At least I really hope so. Would be a way better story.
This is what I thought the Griffin sacking was at first. A bit hoax to get the media off the club's back. Then I realised it was just denial.

Poor form from Gould.

This could’ve been done in the off-season.
That would have been much better all round, but there were problems. If he wanted Ivan, he had to act before Nathan signed with the Tigers. Also the Penrith club leaks like a sieve, this was all over the media, and not only Hook but the players would have been getting wind of what was going on, and you've seen the results of that in on-field performances. If you could keep secrets in Rugby League it might have been possible.

Ivan is a solid coach but he is not a rock star by any means. You cant say the teams he coaches play a fantastic winning brand of Rugby League. As the Warriors coach he was devoid of attacking structures. Look at the Warriors now, under Stephen Kearney they have just broken their all time traveling season win record, didnt get close under Cleary.

Let the Panthers break the bank on him, I dont see Ivan as a Premiership coach, he steady's ships and that is it, that is the reach of his capability as a coach.

At the same time that's all he's ever had. It qould be interesting to see him with a team that is ready for a premiership.

Because the NRL's rules applying to player contracts are different to those applying to club officials. The NRL requires a clearance from a player's former club to register them with a new one. This applies pretty much in all team sports at all levels. Club officials are aligned with business in general. It is not illegal to headhunt someone under contract, it happens in business every day, but if it is a breach of contract compensation or other measures might be imposed by courts and in most cases negotiation between the parties would take place to reach an amicable agreement.

You can't force someone to continue to work for you, even if they are under contract. THAT is illegal.

Ready for a premiership... bit presumptuous - especially with volatile management manoeuvring behind the scenes.

And that's what we needed...

We're not a supply station for other clubs. I want the tigers to make this so pricey for any club looking at us this way as to make it financially insane for them.

Most so called experts seem to think so.

Agreed. You have to do what's in your best interest.
