I'm sure they are smart enough to cover their arses in this. They have legal eagles working for them. They could have been discussing Nathan and his future.

Im sure you are probably right, but Panthers have already admitted they discussed him coaching.

FWIW my opinion is OF COURSE they offered him the job, of course they offered him probably double what he is on now and of course they induced him to break his contract. Will be probably pretty hard to prove to a sufficient level for legal action unless Gus or the Panthers do or say something stupid, Tigers will (and should) bluff, bluster and push as hard as they can and will probably all be wrapped up in a compensation payment.

As I've said a few times, this sucks balls for everyone (including Ivan) except Penrith.

while you might be correct, remember these are rugby league clubs and officials. Smart enough should never be used in the same sentence.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Tigers stuff this up and get sued themselves.

As a tigers fan. I don't want Ivan Cleary if it means that we have to get Nathan aswell. I believe Brooks has improved a lot this year and is very similar to Nathan anyway other than goal kicking. Brooks loves wests tigers so I rather keep him where I think Nathans level has risen due to Maloney being there.

Just the fact that Ivan is considering a move would be enough for me and to just move on.

big hit!

I thought it was pretty tacky of Gould when he said they had already received 12 applications from other candidates including current first grade coaches.

and he apparently received another in an email during a press conference

You know this is all going to blow up because decisions are going to be made on emotion.

No Nathan, and Ivan the professional NRL coach would not consider this or even be in this position. There's a real prospect though that Ivan the Father will weigh in.

So, the Tigers actually want to keep a coach who'd rather be elsewhere?

Speaks volumes of the gargantuan levels of stupidity at that club. They are building something special apparently, too bad their head coach doesn't see it that way.

Ive said a few times that this deal if it happens sucks for everyone except Penrith. I think ultimately it will be bad for Ivan Cleary. Ok of course in the short term (next two years) he will have the chance to coach a top level roster, on double the money and coach his son. But he strikes me as someone who considers themselves a career coach. If things dont end up in premiership glory at Penrith, his career will always have this situation as a bold asterisk next to his name and surely it would impact his appeal at a club other than Penrith.

Its high risk for Ivan when as a long term view he could have been in the same place in two years with his reputation intact.

Ivan cleary is a man of integrity. Does anyone actually think maybe all this is blown out of proportion and IC has been staying put the whole time?

At the end of the day penrith look desperate to me

From reddit:

So far as we know the agreed facts are:

  • Gould sacked Hook Monday
  • Cleary met Penrith for discussions two weeks ago
  • Gould has said Cleary is the main target to take over from Hook
  • Penrith CEO Fletcher says there’s been no contract tabled to Cleary
  • Tigers CEO Pascoe says there’s been no request for release and none would be granted in any event.

Well Russell, the Tigers board have admitted that he was approached by Penrith.

If Ivan was staying put wouldn't he have just come out and said so?

I just find the whole father-son thing could get very awkward and messy down the track. As they say - never go into business with family or friends.

Didn't your recent post say he was looking elsewhere? Absolutely no where does it suggest he wants to leave the tigers. Only that penrith are desperate to have him as head coach

For all we know the meeting he had with penrith could've been about his son nathan

'Elsewhere' based on the fact our club has identified two NRL coaches we are looking at + an alleged meeting with Cleary already taking place + statements from two Tigers board members.

The only thing missing is Ivan Cleary, who hasn't said a peep. If Cleary actually wants to stay he would have said so by now don't you think?

The whole "Ivan wants to coach Nathan, and Nathan wants to be coached by daddy" angle is reaching Darius-Wayne levels of weird.

Grow up, fellas. You must see each other every day. No need to trash dad's reputation and treat the Tigers and their fans with contempt all in the name of "coaching my son".
He also wants to win a premiership.

Tigers said it wasn't just about that. As soon as Ivan told them they went into panic stations.
