Panthers sack Griffin 4 weeks from finals

I find the whole “Nathan wants to be coached by his dad” thing completely juvenile. Does Nathan need a lift to training?

Wait until your contract ends then try it. Don’t just upstumps and leave. They all deserve what’s coming to them.

Would it be unkind of me to suggest, Jason Taylor as the replacement coach for Griffin.

That way Gus get's a coach ,who can really show him what mediocrity is all about, and the opportunity for another Days of Our Lives drama on chNein explaining why he(Gus) sacks him.

TV ratings shoot up and we get a laugh.

The Tax office may well get onto this with a new "turnover tax" applying to NRL coaches.

Everyone hates Gus and thats the main reason people have sided with Griffin here. The club and Gus have done nothing wrong in relation to sacking him... outside of extending his contract a year ago and trying to make it work. He waznt sacked too early. He was kept 18 months too long.

Hook refused to work with his coaching staff. His players were unhappy with his 'game plans' and on 5 occasions this year showed that we can win games after throwing them out the window due to being down by 14 or more points.

This same coach who was supposedly so unfairly dismissed did that to players at our club every year since his arrival. Last year alone from our top 25 we released 6 players early. Our turnover for contracted players since he arrived is outrageous. Fans were sick of watching him ruin and/or push stars out the door.

That shit was unsustainable and was destroying our premiership window.

The club is rightfully copping heat for the Ivan Cleary situation. 1Whatever the situation is we shouldnt be working with him before his Tigers contract expires. 100% deserve it for that.

But Anthony Griffin should have been gone long ago. Gus did everything he could go make it work because Hooks failure was 100% on him.

How can a club keep on a head coach who doesn't give a f**k about the direction his employers want to go in? Who refuses to use the resources available to him? Or work with his coaching staff? Who pushes player after player out of the club and then brags about how many guys have made their debut under him.

Broncos fans knew what he was like years ago. Panthers fans have known what he's like for 2 years now. It seemed like Gus disagreed but he was doing everything in his power to make it work rather than admit he f**ked up in the first place.

I have issue with a lot of what Gus has done. Almost all of it in the Hook era and most of it relates to backing Hook in situations. 12 months ago we let our biggest star go and backed the coach. Extended him even.
Excellent and fair post.

Anthony Griffin doing an incredible con job on NRL fans. He is winning the battle with ease.

Reminds me of Kevin07.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Gould and Griffin are both to blame and the truth lies somewhere between what both of them have been saying.

Very much this.

Two stubborn old fools who can't admit to being wrong going head to head over who is the least pigheaded and most liked.

Gould is full of shit and Griffin made some outrageous claims when interviewed the other night.

The highlight for me so far was Gus on the footy show last night saying that Griffin made himself look foolish in his interview because he was surrounded by people with an axe to grind against Gus.

Gus says this with a straight face while being interviewed by one of his work colleagues and sitting next to two of his best mates. Then he wheels out Ben Hannant, looking very much like Gary Busey and gets him to go through a bunch of crap that he'd obviously pre-rehearsed (and not very well) to support Gus's argument.

It's been very entertaining so far. Hopefully Griffin is on NRL360 again next week for round two.

Fact is, they are both old and shit. Both are overdue for retirement.

How is this for a record! In his time at Roosters and Penrith, Phil Gould has now sacked:

Graham Murray
Ricky Stuart
Ivan Cleary
Anthony Griffin

That's 4 first Grade coaches! The guy is a jealous narcissist who deep down, doesnt want any coach to succeed or reach their potential. I reckon he sees it as a threat to himself and his ego

He hired 3 of those coaches too. .

Some of those replays of Hook in the coaches box are real eye openers. Seems to be a real angry man and his reactions were a sign of a man not getting his way

So if Griff was kept "18 months too long", why was he given a contract extension a year ago?

Does Gus enjoy sacking coaches for the drama? chNien ratings? Or does he just get off on the power?

My opinion of Gus is slipping. He's not bigger than the game, no-one is.

Griffin is a terrible coach and every call Gus made in support of Griffin until he was forced to fire him was a terrible call.

But picking a good NRL coach isn't easy, there's only about 5 known proven ones and even they can have failed tenures. And everything else Gould has done at Penrith besides Griffin has been gold.

Griffin should have been sacked after our 2/7 start last year. But instead he was granted an extension at season's end with Gus announcing it on the Merv Cartwright Medal night.

I am far from being a Gus booster - I will be forever grateful for what he's done since 2011, but he has an ego in which he will not admit a mistake.

Hook said some absolute horse shit on NRL360 about the juniors and how the team was performing this year.

Gus is quite rightly defending the club and his employees, but I am not convinced that everything he has said since Monday is thuthful.

But he has had enough bravado to save the tweets of hate which will somehow resurface when the truth comes out.

But I dunno... he said everything was fine with Moylan and he would remain at Penrith in 2018 and then he was gone within weeks.

We don't get the awful footy show in NZ anymore, so just watched the Gus and Hannant interviews online.

LMFAO @ that fat albino slob Hannant sitting in front of a fireplace in a pink suit. You were sh*t those 4 years, that's why they were the hardest of ya career. You should've stuck with the Dogs instead of crying to go home due to good ol QLD "homesickness".

Why doesn't channel 9 roll out another former Bronco (and one of their employees) Lockyer for his thoughts on Griffin? He always supported him, and knifed Henjack to get him hired.

This Gus/Griffin situation was always going to end in tears. It was a random and weird appointment at the time, and it was never going to last. Gus probably thought highly of Griffin when he rang Gus to tell him to sign Gagai when he fired him. That rapport would've been the main reason he signed him, yet he was never a good fit for the Panthers.

Ivan should stick with his current employer and not make himself look like a desperate ex who's trying to get back with his old girlfriend even after she cheated on him.

That's hardly happening at all. Nathan isn't saying he's going to walk out of his contract. Way to jump to conclusions.

The situation for Penrith is that they want to keep Nathan before he can negotiate with other clubs in November. Nathan wants to play under his dad. Ergo, the club that has Ivan Cleary, will have Nathan Cleary. Penrith want to be that club.

If the Tigers wanted Nathan, I see no reason why they can't say to Ivan that they will make a play for him when they can talk to him in November.

The Tigers hold all the cards here.

News Flash... Nathan Cleary is not that great.

He's a solid first grade half back. Not worth sacking a coach and paying 7 figures in damages to another club over though.

Panthers have probably paid over a mill to get rid of Griffin. If they pinch Ivan from the Tigers then the Tigers will want a mill in damages. Plus you probably have to pay Ivan and Nathan a mill each per season. Basically $4 million dollars for Ivan and Nathan in year one.

That's a ridiculous price to pay for a half and a coach, when neither have actually won anything.
