Parramatta Eels dodged a bullet with Quade Cooper recruitment drive

HOW close did Wallabies five-eighth Quade Cooper come to joining rugby league and coming second last with Parramatta and not even being there at Eden Park for tomorrow's World Cup semi-final against the All Blacks?

About a cab ride from Parramatta to Sydney Airport, just before he flew out with the Wallabies to play in South Africa last year.

Eels chief executive Paul Osborne revealed as much to this column yesterday - and then added the club collectively breathed a sigh of relief after watching Cooper's defensive effort against the Springboks.

"We came as close as his manager at the time Richard Colreavy telling me to go to the airport to get him to sign the contract," Osborne said last night. "There wasn't enough time, and then he went away to South Africa and that was the end of it. He came back and signed with the ARU.

"Our coach at the time, Daniel Anderson, said then that he couldn't tackle and was of the view it would take too long for him to adjust to league.

"I'm glad we didn't sign him after watching him last weekend."

The Eels were rumoured to have offered Cooper as much $850,000 per season, although the real figure is closer to about $650,000.

Would his asking price be so much now after his turnstile-like defence against the Boks?

For months now, Cooper and All Blacks winger Sonny Bill Williams have been linked to the Roosters - something the Bondi-based club hotly disputes.

While Anderson was skeptical last year about Cooper's transition from the game they play in heaven to the greatest game of all, yesterday he said he had the potential to become "another Benji Marshall".

"I would assume his contract value would likely equal a 'franchise' player but he would need a couple of seasons to get used to the amount of defence," he said. "He could develop into another Benji but would need time."

Comments from Osborne, comments from Anderson, comments about Anderson.. let's see if we can turn this discussion into a shitstorm.

Go.

The first paragraph is a beat-up. If we had Quade Cooper in the halves we would not be second-last.

All this does is show Osbourne's lack of professionalism.

First, Cooper has a bad game and he puts the boot in.

Second, he's speaking on behalf of Anderson about things they would have discussed behind closed doors.

Wanker.

The coach said he couldn't tackle. The coach said he would take too long to adjust. I offered him 800k and the use of my credit card.

FMD Ozzie should learn to shut the f**k up. Talk about burning bridges. QC will never come now because he just sledged him. Not saying that we want him but boy talk about unprofessional.

It is unbelievably dumb. If we are really negotiating with his best mate sbw even dumber.

Apart from anything else it's bloody rude to disclose negotiations.

It's unneccesaary to put the boot in and burn a bridge with the player his management or even his friends and fans.

Plus he seems to be actually saying that we came very close to paying a truckload for a bloke we didn't rate, and that he was keen to sign but we were saved by our own incompetence in not being able to get a contract to him to sign.

Would anyone be happy if cronk or thurston or smith were wanting to sign and we missed the
because we couldn't get a contract an hour across town? Seriously?

Wow we're such a mess. Hypothetically.

How would you feel if we'd dragged our arses about signing a player on massive overs because we weren't sure if he was worth it, and ended up thankful that we missed out?

I wish Anderson had've been a better judge of Mortimer's ability.

This article proves anderson had no control on who osbourne signed

At least not by that stage. Remember this was the end of August 2010, and Kearney was announced as Eels coach on the 6th of October after about a month of conjecture.

Anderson obviously didn't make recruitment/retention decisions after the board had decided not to retain him but he certainly would have prior to that.

This Cooper thing would definitely have happened 'between coaches', so to speak, and Osborne definitely shouldn't be making recruitment decisions.

That said, it seemed like a good idea at the time, as did Anderson re-signing Mortimer, and at least Osborne was being proactive in the player market while looking for a new coach.

Cooper would have been a massive signing that would have generated a lot of interest (i.e. money) and at least Osborne is man enough to say that in hindsight it would have been a mistake.

But it's also good that they gave Kearney complete control of the football team. He certainly knew Quade Cooper was a bad idea.

Dumb comments by Osborne. Why respond to such questions it does no favours for anyone. Regardless of the Quade Cooper situation there's no need to lay the boot into him after one bad performance. DA's comments were professional as he just aired an honest opinion without being critical but Osborne in this case just needs to learn to shut up.

Tele article said:

That direct quote from Osborne should put an end to the Ando-always-had-sole-control-over-recruitment-the-whole-time argument, once and for all...

I know Ando gets painted in a bad light now - mostly from those here that blindly swallowed Spagnolo's "word" (printed at cost to the club and mailed to every member in a pre-election PR stunt worse than Tingha-gate imo) - but Ando must have been more than happy to get paid out early by these clowns, once they'd decided (only months after a grand final win) that an extension was out of the question and they'd go coach shopping again instead.

As we all know, we can't vote out the CEO, and Osborne only has half of the responsibilities (footy rather than leagues club) that his predecessor did, but geez he seems to have made a consistent mess of the things he's actually in charge of? Enough for Glenn Duncan to walk away from the madhouse, when the rest of the Board express their ongoing faith in Osborne...
