You'd think Docker- Clay would be dominating but he just doesn't have it IMO. Meanwhile
Manly score another try it will 50 -26

ZDC kicking game is pretty bad will need to work on that before he goes anywhere

Anticipation in defence is bog ordinary, line defence is better in the U14s

Manly force their way to our line from the extended set and surprise, surprise...another try from a grubber kick.

This time the halfback kicks for himself and somehow regains the ball in a messy pile on. At least there was an attempt at the ball this time around but the Sea Eagles come away with another try.

The conversion is successful

Manly crack the half century as they lead 50-26

its a Hot day out there- Can imagine its hard to defend first game back in this. Sounds like the team with less errors is scoring points.Anyone picks from a rusty bunch?

That was probably the worst defence of the game as Tom Trbojevic loops and swerves from our left edge to the ruck, beating half a dozen defenders before simply out pacing Davis to the line. All arm grabs there and nothing short of embarrassing.

The conversion is unsuccessful

Manly lead 54-26

Kaufusi makes a woeful attempt at a tackle,Dabis makes a second miss, Manly stroll over, a friggin debacle.

Worst play in this grade in 4 or 5 years, defensively non existent

Huzzah! We picked up a grubber...

Seconds on the clock as the Eels break through down the right as Fuimaono frees up Davis. There is cover defence on Davis so he grubbers in field but French is just beaten to the ball. The Eagles kick it out and there is a bit of push and shove after the siren but nothing comes of it and the players shake hands.

Full Time

Manly DEF Parra 54-26

As I said earlier, can't defend the effort today. Truly abysmal stuff but they look worlds better in the trials so I would like to think that this team simply had an awful day and simply need to iron out some issues on the edges in defence and basic possession matters in attack. Looking forward to a much improved effort next week against the Dogs.

As long as we keep beating the Broncos it doesn't really matter how we go.

Yep thats a disgrace. To be beaten like that by a traditionly ordinary 20's team like Many, needs a huge attitude turn around very quickly.

Isn't our Under 20's side quite young? Maybe manlys boys are closer too 20 than 18.

Id like too see how many of our guys are still eligible for under 20's next year.

Of last night's side, here are the ages they turn this year:

Davis (20)
Miski (20)
Fuimaono (19)
Smith (18)
Pene (20)
French (19)
Dockar-Clay (20)
Tepu-Smith (20)
Tonise (18)
Twal (19)
Aloiai (20)
Muna (20)
Markus (20)
Izzard (20)
Amone (19)
Raeli (20)
Kaufusi (20)

So the side was actually younger last year, since eight or nine of these guys (plus Lussick) were regulars last year whereas only six of them will be playing NYC again next year.

Anyway, it was just one game, and we were competitive until we gave up. Plus Manly might be minor premiers this year, you never know this early. It's hard to get a gauge on the quality of an under 20s side so early in the season, since there are so many changes from one year to the next.

Unlike last year thou POU - a lot of our guys in there last year where highly rated, From that list most the guys rated any type of chance to succeed from what ive read on here im assuming are -
French-twal-Smith-Amone-Fuimano- Davis and Alioi.
So bar Davis and Alioi the others will all be playing under 20's next year?

Just got back from the District Reps. Another good win for the Harold Matthews even without front line forwards Jesse Cronin and PJ Vaigalu - both of whom are being monitored for short term niggles. They over ran the Steelers 32-8 in the end. Tui Afualo had another monster game and leveled a poor Steeler with a bone crunching hit.

Unfortunately the SG Ball suffered their first loss of the season. Illawarra were the better team for the majority of the game with the Eels giving up plenty of possession through out the match. Parra finally roared to life in the final 10 minutes and bridged the margin to just 2 points at 32-30 before a controversial delayed call from the far side touchy for a shoulder charge on the Illawarra kicker lead to a massive reversal of momentum in the final 2 minutes.

Next week the District Reps are out at Penrith and will be a logistical clash with the NSW Cup game so I will have to make a call this week on what to cover.

From last night whenever Tom T or Jesse Ramien wanted to turn it on they broke through our defence and we just didn't aim up in defence. Hope performances across the next few weeks improve as we still have some good players in this team. I wonder what a proper dummy half would have done out there for us last night.

From the Harold Matthews today there's just one name that sticks out from memory...Tui Afualo. He's just an absolute beast in attack and defence, there was man instances where he was carrying players, breaking tackles making 20-30 metre runs. And in defence there was one sickening hit where he slaughtered a Steeler's forward and unfortunately the young man had to be taken off the field with what appeared to be a shoulder problem. Outside of Tui though I was very impressed with Josh Curran in the middle, he's a big boy in our team but looking at both teams he wasn't the biggest out there but his performance is huge. As I was sitting in front of the Parra bench I got to hear some good things, it was about 2 minutes after Josh came off they were looking for another interchange and they called out "Josh" so he looked up and put his headgear on and was raring to go again but it was another Josh they were calling. He wants to be in amongst the play and has a big impact.

Shame about the SG Ball team but we just gave away too much ball and the Steelers were carrying us up the middle, it didn't help that the ref was making our defensive line go back further than theirs but that shouldn't be an excuse. In this game I was hugely impressed with Joey Tramontana, he is just another class above in both attack and defence. Whenever the Steelers looked to break our line Joey was there to bring the player down, in attack he was constantly in at dummy half giving some nice service to our forwards and halves. Isn't good blaming the refereeing but there was some very dodgy calls including a Doolan attempt at goal which made the goal post disappear from where I was sitting yet the touchies waved it away; everyone including the injured/not playing 18's thought it sailed over and that would have eventually locked the score up at 32-32.

I know this is a bit off topic, but gee the Steelers can beat the eels one of stronger junior areas and better SG ball sides but they can't get a stand alone side!!!! Bloody disgraceful!!! Only 4 NRL games in the gong this year, for one of the heartlands of league.

Having good juniors is all about demographics (working class with a high birth rate). Having a viable NRL team is about the size of the market.
